How can we make The Big House a more intimidating place to play?

Submitted by robbyt003 on

I don't feel like The Big House really gives us that home field advantage like it should.  What do you think Michigan should do to change that (besides the obvious like have a better OL or QB)?

Do you put in more stadium suites to help hold in the sound?  Do you kick out all of the fans that say "down in front"?  Expand the student section?

Not aware of any video of this happening in the stadium yet.  Maybe somebody could record it when we play Rutgers in a few weeks.

But I do think it would be a great tradition.  If done the right way, over a period of 10 years or so, you would definitely get the whole stadium doing it since eventually those students would filter into the general population of the stadium--plus non-students who are pretty die hard fans would learn it too.

It's not really a cheer so much as an incantation.

And it'd work well because the length of it only works during relatively quiet periods of the game, and a TV time out would be the perfect time to do this.  Plus the content of the speech is for EXACTLY when a team is down & might feel tempted to quit or to start finger-pointing or blaming each other for a bad turn of events.

Definitely would put chills up the spine of any player listening to the crowd.

I'd love to hear the policy proposal that would kick out fans who say "down in front"

On a less sarcastic note, completing some kind of structure similar to the suites that encloses the bowl would increase the noise. That's not happening for a while.

Start winning games there. That would help.

Also, outside of the student section I've always felt like the fans going to the game are largely part of the "wine and cheese" crowd. They're not there to get up on their feet and scream all game like you'd see fans at OSU doing.

That atmosphere was amazing on Saturday. I don’t see anything that could improve it. The team needs to preform that’s all

price the tickets in a way that would bring people that actually cheer the team.

Because a very large amount of the people that are season ticket holders are rich, snobby people that use their season tickets as a "dick measurement" among their other rich snobby friends who really don't give 2 shits about what the happens on that field.

They are the same people that tell me and everybody around them to sit down when watching the game. I love the big house, and I love sharing the big house experience with my 2 boys, but man there sure is a "country club" type atmosphere in there sometimes that I feel needs to be rejuvinated with some younger fans. But it has to be affordable

I don't have season tix this year; last time I did was 2010, and you know what a dud that year was. I got them through a special deal offered by the Alumni Association for a very reasonable price, which is just to say I ain't rich. By a long shot.

Regardless, even with the season as poor as that one was, I can assure you that the 2010 crowds were vastly louder on a more continuous basis than were the crowds back when I had regular season tickets as a student from 1971 through 1981. The atmosphere that was typical back then was nothing less than somnolent, only occasionally punctuated by cheering after a Michigan touchdown. The only crowds that were up to our current standards for continuous, loud noise were the games for OSU, to a lesser extent MSU, and the occasional non-conference game with a program like Notre Dame.

And here's the thing: those were the days where tickets were hugely more affordable to people of average means. There were no required donations to the athletic department just to be able to purchase tickets, either.

I'm not trying to dismiss your experiences with the down-in-front blue hairs; they certainly exist today and did back then as well. I'm just saying that the income level of the fans doesn't translate directly to noise and volume.

The stadium atmosphere, which was electric and as loud and raucous as I've ever witnessed, had nothing to do with Michigan losing on Saturday.

Look, the stadium is what it is. It is a giant bowl where fans in the upper rows are a long way from the field. It is not a vertical stadium where fans are on top of the field and nothing will change that. Sure playing in front of 110K+ can be intimidating, but having been to games in Tuscaloosa when that place is rockin' is downright scary. I do think the renovation help keep in a lot more crowd noise, but only so much can be done for that. Also, a punch'em in the face football team on BOTH sides of the ball should be all the intimidation needed. You know, the kind of team that has an offense which knocks the hell out of the opponents defensive line. An offense that lines up and says 'we are going to run the ball down the field and we dare you to stop us'. That is intimidating when you know what's coming and can't stop it.
