MSU Snowflakes: The Offense

This will be the repository for your thoughts and hot takes on the offense in our game versus Michigan State.

10 points on your home field against your in state rival. Despite the turnovers, have to improve the play calling.  Our defense gave the ball back to the offense over a dozen times tonight on 3 & outs, and we scored 10 points.

There are some roster limitations on offense (non-elite QB, RT problem, Mason Cole paying LT when he is best used as a center, young and not (yet) elite receivers, etc.)

However, it is not like the offense is full of Purdue level players.  There is more than enough talent on the offense to produce more than 10 points at home in a rivalry game.

This is mostly a problem of terrible offensive game plans.  And really it is the whole concept of what they are trying to do on offense this year that is unworkable.

JH, Drevno and Pep continue to ask the o-line to do things that only elite o-lines can do--get ahead of the sticks on 1st and 2nd down against defenses that have sold out to stop the inside runs.

And this constantly puts Michigan behind the sticks and in way too many obvious passing downs.

Not sure what this is going to look like in UFR but I think it's going to look even worse than it did tonight. We have a field goal kicker that can drain it from over 50 and attempted only one FG. The aftermath will look something like what our D is doing to Rutgers. It's a joke. Wow! Still love rooting for them and have confidence we can pull it together. I would love to see us improve year to year with this being the last of the Hoke aftermath.

Appreciate his sentiments.

It’s better that whining and crying after a loss. I’m still excited to watch our team develop. Wish we had not lost, but I’m hopeful that this experience will wake up the offense (coaches and players) to become more innovative.

Yes, and they too look like warmed over dog shit; which makes this loss so frustrating. They were gifted five turnovers and still didn't win in convincing fashion. Lewerke has been their leading rusher in multiple games. Lewerke. They too have their own issues that any competent OC will take advantage of. It's no coincidence that their wins are over shitty Bowling Green, an in transition Western team, and two Big Ten foes that shit the bed offensively. They suck too. Sadly, the good guys sucked worse last night.

Agreed.

MSU sucks hard. +5 TO margin and they only managed to win by 4 points. That is a ringing indictment of just how bad the Spartans are.

And...UM lost to them.

EPIC FAIL!

Harbaugh need to:

1) Start Peters the rest of the season to get him prepared to be the starter next year even though it might cost UM the game at Indiana or Maryland. This season is effecitvely over anyway as UM will get taken behind the woodshed by PSU, UW and OSU.

2) Completely clean house on the offensive side of the ball. He can't fire the players (unfortunately) but he can, and must, get a better offensive coaching staff in place.

For someone who's supposed to be such an offensive innovator, Harbaugh's schemes and gameplans have been beyond terrible this year.  Everyone knows what MSU does on defense, because they've done it for the past 8 years.  They still ate us for lunch.  With the athletes we have we should have an answer by now.  I don't know if Harbaugh and the offensive staff are hamstrung by the youth on the team or what but this is pitiful.  Can they really be that bad that we've had to dump half our playbook from last year??  We need Jedd back.

The dude is literally living out some childhood fantasy of being Bo. And god bless Bo but he wasn't exactly an offensive mastermind.

There's no offensive innovation inbuilt into Harbaugh's idea of what a football team should be like. I think he's opportunistic and open to ideas and as long as those ideas were Jed Fish's there was occasionally a creative one. But it seems pretty apparent that with Fish gone and Hamilton in, we're so predictable and vanilla we make Mike Debord look like a schematic guru.

Power shotgun third down run, thanks for letting us down. Ohio State has had 1200 yards combined the past 2 weeks. We don't have the athletes or coaches they do. We are going to get waxed by PSU, wisky, and OSU.

It's hard for me (or any fan) to analyze Jay Harbaugh's performance... regardless, isn't it about time for him to step out from under his father's wing? You would think he would want to get out and make a name for himself rather than just coaching under his father.

I have a fucked up idea.

Move Cole back to center. Slide JBB to LT and insert Jansen at RT. This offensive line can't block worth a damn right now as constructed, so put a veteren center back in place to make the line calls.

I told you it was fucked up.

Tonight Michigan beat Michigan as much as Michigan State beat Michigan. The coaching staff has to shoulder some of the blame.

Time to go back to the drawing board and revamp the offense?  Through five games, including a week off to develop an improved offense, there has been little to show for the offense, even when they haven't been playing in monsoon weather.

Things to consider as the season crawls on and there's a good possibility exists that there could be losses against Penn State, Wisconsin and Ohio State:

  1. Should Brandon Peters and Dylan McCaffrey start to get enough meaningful snaps in practice to determine what they can do, if called upon in a game?
  2. Is it time to re-evaluate who should be starting on the offensive line and where they should be playing?
  3. Are there any quick-hitting plays that can be designed for the wide receivers to get open in stride and get significant yarda after the catch?
  4. What's Eddie McDoom's role going to be from now on? Could he or anyone else be used in a wildcat formation?
  5. Is it about time to give up on running any plays between the tackles?

I never see any quick outs, never see any quick slants or short curl or hook routes. The defenses are always on their heals and ready for Michigan's routes because they never challenge underneath with the quick hitters. Why your receivers don't run every fucking route imaginable just blows my mind. Holy shit, I cant stay on this site. I might have to quit watching this stuff because it pains me. I'm sorry guys. I might be giving this stuff up.

I'll check back in a few weeks. It's not worth the time anymore. Enjoy making all that money "coaches". Maybe Harbaugh should stick to podcasting.

Was quite offensive. Drevno and Pep need to get their heads out of their asses. Maybe less high dive jumping and maybe more gameplanning for Harbaugh. What a complete shit show. I would have never thought possible but these coaches make Al Borgas look good.

Give James Franklin credit . . . his offense was not working worth shit.  So he went out and got a legit OC and it turned that program around.

Harbaugh wanted the best DC in college football and he went out and brought in Don Brown.

If he took that same approach for an OC, do you think he would come back with the current crew?

He seems to have a blind spot there.

Our offense is not worthy of our defense.  Not even close.
