OT: Former Last Chance U star Isaiah Wright charged with murder

Submitted by lhglrkwg on

I know OT season is over but I figure with the popularity of Last Chance U that a lot of people will find this news interesting.

Isaiah Wright formerly of EMCC and West Georgia as well as his brother, former IU WR/RB Camion Patrick were both charged with murder overnight:

Camion Patrick, 22, was arrested Wednesday by police in Bloomington and his 20-year-old brother Isaiah Wright was arrested Wednesday in Tennessee. They are accused of killing 18-year-old Caleb Radford on July 25 in Alcoa, Tenn. Radford was found on the street in a residential neighborhood with multiple stab wounds.

I don't know, i get feeling sorry for kids in bad situations, making bad decisions and all, but there's no situation so bad that you can't recognize stabbing someone to death as a REALLY BAD DECISION.

but how about we just end the charade of having what in any sane system would be fringe semi-pro athletes with side jobs pretend to be university students in order to be "eligible to compete".

In what other career do we tell people: that's great that you want to be a banker, and you seem qualified, but in order to allow you to do that, you need to be good at horse riding! Here's a horse! We'll be checking to make sure you're sticking at it, and if not, you're fired!

There are many ways this could be fixed to allow those of us at nose-in-the-air academic institutions to keep our precious dignity (kids can take classes if they want, or retain the option to study after football, etc. etc.). And of course it doesn't solve everyone's issue. But you've got to think that forcing people who have no interest in studying to "stay in school" is neutral at best and a pain in the ass/contributing factor to negative emotions and personal failure at worst.

It has to come from the NFL. I think it's a terrible idea for the schools to make their players optional students. The main outcome would be far more players leaving college with nothing of value. No more of them are going to play in the NFL than now, but many more will be unprepared for life without football.

I did a terrible job of articulating my point, and was negged accordingly. I was attempting to point out the absurdity in jumping from "guy on tv show kills people" to "why do we make these kids go to college". Both are worth discussion, but I have no earthly idea how the OP devolved into the latter.

Having seen two whole episodes of Last Chance U and being married to a former student athlete who has insider knowlege of what it is like at UM I agree that "student" athlete is largely a joke in many cases.

That said you have to clearly define the problem before proposing solutions.  The problem isn't that college athletics is a charade, that is a symptom. The problem is that there is no viable alternative to play football between the ages of 18 and 21.

The NFL should invest in a U23 developmental league where players can come straight from high school and play through the season they turn 23.  These kids can get paid right away although it still migth pay more to play in the SEC.

I don't know.  If QBs continue to struggle to pick up NFL offenses I could see there being a push to create a minor league so that they can develop kids in NFL style offenses instead of College spread and shred type offenses.

I have a hard time having any compassion for those who have murdered another human being.  I am profoundly sad for the victim and his family.

I know nothing of the upbringing that the accused had, based on the comments it was not very good, but I refuse to let that fact somehow lessen the extreme violence and disregard for another human.  Those boys had their chance....and failed miserably at life.

Correct.

But I would argue that there are plenty of people who are more "numb" to the idea of killing someone or it doesn't have the same impact to them as it would for you and I...because of their circumstances growing up.

Plenty of people end up doing bad things people around them did growing up. In their minds, it may not be "normal" - but it's not "fucking INSANE" like it would be for us.

Doesn't make it okay...I'm just saying, not everyone is going to be terrified and sick to the thought of killing someone else like you and I would be.

Pretty sure this topic will be long gone by the time these guys have their day in court.  So I took the opportunity to chime in.  I said nothing about rushing judgement. But the sentiment of feeling bad for someone perpatrating a violent crime because they had a tough childhood evades me.

If these kids are innocent of the crime then I hope like hell we find that out and they find the killer and justice finds him.  If they are proven guilty, then fuck em.  My sorrow rests with the victim and his family.

If I recall correctly the children were more or less abandoned when they were very young, like 7 or 8, and they lived in foster homes for several years. I remember thinking the kid had obvious emotional issues and looked like a dick on the show, but when I thought about where he came from / etc I took a step back and realized how his difficult situation probably influenced that a great deal. That said, if he murdered somebody, all my sympathy for him goes out the window. We'll see I guess

The story about the 3 brothers being homeless and walking around Wal-Mart eating the chicken from the "hot bar" or whatever was a "damn" moment for sure.

No excuse, but it is sad that in this great country...we still have folks who grow up in what feels a lot more like "third world" than the "American Dream" or average low-class lifestyle.

I just read a different article saying two other guys are being held on bond for the murder not these two. Even though they were still arrested, they haven't been charged until more is found out. not sure what is true at this point. Too bad

It's tragic how a family that had tried to overcome so much in their young lives just fell apart.  This doesn't excuse the violence and the death they allegedly perpetrated, but you watch that second season and you realize that these were kids basically abandoned by everyone and who stuck together to (seemingly) overcome it all.  It's just tragic.

As I live off topside road it was deeply concerning that someone was stabbed in my neck of the woods. Truly shocking how it's such a small world. Prayers for calebs family.

Sadly his moping around on the sidelines made it seem unlikely he would pull out of the unfair circumstances he was born into. I can't put myself in his shoes which makes real stories like these have me counting blessings. Great show. Also innocent until proven guilty. I have no idea if he did anything wrong at all. Everyone should carry that thought above all else; we lock up far too mny people in this country for dumb reasons or no reason at all..
