OT: Unpopular opinions and guilty pleasures, Music edition.

Submitted by wolverine1987 on

From past music topics on the blog, it's clear the mgocommunity has good taste in music. Now I want to talk about your not too popular opinions on music. Guilty pleasures edition, and those artists you like but bury in your playlists and don't necessarily make public. I'll start.

I like earlier Radiohead when they embraced melody and traditional song construction more than current Radiohead.

I love the first Boston album.

I dismiss Journey except when any of several songs pop up.

Come on Eileen is awesome.

Have at it.

Stones over the Beatles or Zeppelin.

I don't care what anyone says Nickelback music is brainless fun and there are much worse songs to play in the car while driving it to have on the headphones while running.

If a song comes on and it brings you pleasure, go with it and enjoy it. There are too many painful and negative things in the world to worry about whether the music that brings you happiness is cool or what anyone else thinks of it. Don't be ashamed of what you like and fuck anyone that tries to make you feel bad.

I've been listening to a band called the swans lately and they are really awesome. Some of their songs stretch to like half an hour with much of that being build up, but when the track gets to it's climax it PAYS OFF. Unpopular opinion? I think that John Frusciante (formerly of the Red Hot Chili Peppers) is one of the greatest guitarists of all time. If Anthony Kiedis was a better songwriter and lyricist, that band would have been one of the all-time greats instead of where they currently stand. Kiedis ruins that band. Even though Blood Sugar Sex Magik is an incredible album, I think they could've made 5 or 6 classics if they had someone different leading the band. Listen to Frusciante, Flea, and Chad Smith jam and tell me differently. Radiohead got too cute on KOL, but they've veered back in track and I trust their future stuff will blow me away yet again.

They were on track to make five or six classics (I'd argue they made three) with BSSM, Californication, and Stadium Arcadium. By the way is great too. But then Frusciante left, and that's why they currently stand where they are. Kiedis doesn't hold them back, he's vital to their sound.

I think that Californication and One Hot Minute are classics as well. Stadium Arcadium could have been a classic if they'd cut one of the discs out and made it a normal album.

There's an unpopular opinion, almost all double albums are too long. Just cut the album back and release the rest of the songs as B-sides, there's nothing wrong about B-sides!

Unpopular- I don't understand why everyone liked Prince. I do not at all. Guilty pleasure- the Moana soundtrack. I play it for the kids and I walk around all day singing it. Sometimes out loud at work. It's not a good look.

The greatest hip hop artist of all time is Jay Electronica. My favorite rap album of all time is My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy by Kanye West

Kiss is just a stage show. The most overrated band ever.

I like Katy Perry and Taylor Swift more then I should.

Amy Lee of Evanescence has a voice of an angel.

The best music is instrumental. Lyrics rarely cause me to emote. This applies to classical, jazz, film scores, electronica, whatever. I still like plenty of music with vocals. Queen, rolling stones, Weezer, bowie, and the list goes on. And last but not least, Bruce Springsteen sucks ass.
