OT: What are you listening to?
I'm always in the mood to find new music. I've recently been listening to Portishead and the Glass Animals.
All of this with a healthy dose of Radiohead and Kendrick Lamar makes for a truly wonderful medley of sounds going into my Memorial Day weekend
Edit: Someone asked for genres so I'll do my best here.
Portishead: trip-hop (psychedelic electronic rock stuff)
Glass Animals: alternative indie rock
Kendrick Lamar: hip-hop/rap
Radiohead: pick a genre other than country and they've dabbled in it
I am one who subscribes to the theory that, sadly, rock is basically dead, at least to millenials and teens. Aside from a couple of okay indy bands not much has come out in the last 5 or 6 years that has really caught my ear.
One exception I've found is Highly Suspect - a Cape Cod band by way of Brooklyn. Their current album, The Boy Who Died Wolf, reminds me of alot of the harder edged guitar based rock I grew up with in the 80s and 90s. I'd recommend checking it out if you haven't heard them.
not sure what album it's is on tho
Their music is good but his lyrics are borderline nonsensical. I like the album though.
Marillion Clutching at straws. They had a huge hit with the song Kaylie. Britsh band that credits Grand Rapids with really giving them there big push here in the states.
UFO Lights out. Rock album and another band that should have had more success.
Been digging on Blackstone Cherry and Reckless Kelly lately, with Cross Canadian Ragweed always on the playlist.
Basically, it's updated Southern Rock. Blackstone Cherry is heavier while Reckless Kelly and Cross Canadian Ragweed have a stronger country flavor.
This new band I found.
Local Natives: Sunlit Youth
STRFKR: Being No One, Going Nowhere
Empire of the Sun: Two Vines
Great Good Fine Ok: III
Kishi Bashi: Sonderlust
Saint Motel: Saintmotelevision
Roosevelt: Roosevelt
All of this is considered indie pop, I think. I'm not good at identifying genres, but the music is wonderful.
Their lead singer is a friend of mine...we studied abroad together. I actually like the My Type EP the best.
<End Cool Story Bro>
And yeah, I think My Type might be their best album, but since Saintmotelevision came out last year, I've been listening to that more lately. It's all just solid music.
If you haven't seen them live, I highly recommend it. They're a lot of fun in concert.
...I forgot, for those of you who want to listen to music that came out of UM, make sure you check out Vulfpeck. Those guys are wonderful.
I've been a fan of Portishead since forever. I bought Dummy in college the same week that it was released (1994) and have been a fan ever since. The Roseland NYC Live album is absurdly good.
Really enjoying the new Kendrick albums as well.
Can't stand Glass Animals tho - way too saccharin for me.
Sonny Clark: Blues in the Night
I love the stuff he did with Grant Green. Timeless music.
-Alt J
-War on Drugs
-Lots of Grunge
-Modest Mouse (I forgot how good Good News for People Who Like Bad News is)
I've been re-listening to the new Project/Object release of the Zappa/Mother's album "Uncle Meat", called "Meat Light". Many remixes/remasters don't seem to be all that different from the versions that came before them, but the Rykodisc masters of Uncle Meat must have been pretty bad. Hearing this latest version is making me reevalute Uncle Meat's place in the Zappa hierarchy. It's amazing.
I ordered the Project/Object treatment of "Cruising with Rueben and the Jets", called "Greasy Love Songs". It should be waiting for me when I get home today. I'm pretty excited to put that one on too and see what they did to it.
Opeth
Currently playing in what for me is a massive rotation -
Been hooked on Leon Bridges for the last couple of weeks. Dude was born about 40 years too late
EDM is the best music on Earth. Above and Beyond are the greatest DJs on Earth. They have their weekly podcast radio show called Group Therapy and play music from some of the best DJs around the world, along with some of their own tracks. They're due for another solo album, I think. That said , they recently had their second acoustic album, which I'm not really into. I'm hoping by the end of the year, they will have announced another album that isn't acoustic tracks.

Alternating between:
Volbeat: A Danish heavy metal-ish band.
Lord Huron: An Indie band (with Michigan roots), who are FINALLY getting radio time due to one of their songs appearing on Netflix 13 Reasons Why.
The Head and the Heart: Another awesome Indie rock band that's been getting more radio time, but I like their older stuff more than their current radio hits.
Justice - Woman
Mark Barrott - Sketches from an Island 2
Carpenter Brut - Trilogy
Townes Van Zandt -- when I can.
Lisa Loeb Nursery Rhymes (a million times a day)
This guy because he kicks ass:
Bach. The only music anyone needs!
I bought a few tunes off of Todd Rundgren's new album - White Knight. He's a bit hit or miss these days with his new stuff. I saw Todd last summer and really enjoyed the show. Exceeded expectations, because sometimes you never know what you'll get with older performers. Did not expect him to play his homage to Jimi Hendrix "#1 Lowest Denominator". If you were a teenage in the 70s, you heard Todd's music a lot.
A mix of old and new:
Goin' out of my head - Little Anthony and the Imperials
S.O.B - Daniel Ratliff
The Wanton Song - Led Zeppelin
Grinder - Gary Clark, Jr. (he does electric blues quite well)
Feels like summer - Weezer
Set me free - The Heavy
Some old Yes (Fragile), some tunes from the Guardians of the Galaxy (first one) soundtrack and some ulitimate stoner hippy music from the 70s by Caravan (from Girls Who Grow Plump in the Night)
I'm at a strange age where I still like to listen to music (maybe that never stops) but have limited interest in the current "scene".
I've been listening to A LOT of Uncle Tupelo, Wilco, Son Volt, Old 97's, Ryan Adams, Avett Brothers, Lucero, Drive-By Truckers and American Aquarium.....with some Johnny Cash sprinkled in for good measure.
However, I am a fellow 5th Van Tyne alumnus. 1986-87.
The Goo Goo Dolls. #SorryNotSorry
Going back and forth between Flo and the Pale Emperor all morning. Funny, listening to Manson makes me want to engage in sadomasochistic sex with really slutty strippers wearing mesh thigh-highs torn in a couple areas on the thighs and shins in 6 inch heels while straddling a Night Train chopper in a trashy back alley giving off the smell of a fresh stogie and female chest and pantie persperation. Holy run on.
DEATH
METAL
The old-school stuff! Autopsy, Morbid Angel, Incantation, Monstrosity ect. It's the perfect thing to wake up to and get ready to attack the day. CRANK IT!
Plus, "Outta My Head," by The Dream Syndicate in advance of the September release of the first new album in almost 30 years by Steve Wynn’s reorganized and re-formed band (LINK to The Dream Syndicate’s “Outta My Head”), Josh Ritter’s “Homecoming” as a reminder of the final episode from the second season of “Billions” and Chuck Berry’s “Big Boys” as a reminder of how great he was.
Wah-wah, wah wah wah, tiny purple fishes run laughing through your fingers...
After listening to a Giles Martin interview from Abbey Road Studios about the re-mixing of The Beatles' Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band for the 50th anniversary release of the re-mixed version of the album, I’ve been listening to the album again from both the Mono and Stereo Box Sets, as well my original vinyl copy. For those of us who were alive and listening to the radio when the album was released on Thursday, June 1, 1967, the next week should bring back interesting memories.
