He didn't get a lot of good opportunities because of Speight and that offense, but he played and had a few catches. He should still be a starting receiver come fall, I think.
McDoom was spotted walking around after the game without a wrap but had a limp.
Or an achilles like I was worried about.
ACL injuries aren't necessarily diagnosible right away. A guy can often walk on one, before the swelling kicks in.
You are the ONLY person to say Speight looked good. Therefore, by mob rules, you're opinion is invalid. I say this having not yet seen the game...
I'm a Speight guy, I lol at the Peters folks who hadn't seen anything from the kid before today. But Speight was awful, and I didn't even see the goal line interception. He had no time, as I think the offense was vanilla and Brown didn't give a shit, he kept blitzing. And maybe it's a thing where "you're the starter, you know the D line won't be blocked, but try to get the ball out so the younger WRs can make plays". I hope so, because his ball security was horrendus. If that was him competing, then yes O'Korn will be in the competition this Fall and so will Peters.
I still think it's his job and there was some type of qualification to his play, but he was awful. Taking 8 sacks would have been a much better performance, and O'Korn or Peters could have done that in his shoes.

Peters needs weight before you put him ahead of Speight and O'Korn? Did you really mean that - he is a pretty big dude and looks filled out. I think he is already ahead of O'Korn. That would apply to McCaffery once he gets on campus but no way is Peters in need of weight to move up the ladder.
How did the Center's look (Kugler and Ruiz)? I feel like the other 4 spots are nearly solidified (Cole, Bredeson, Onwenu, JBB)
play. I don't think that spot is solidified at all. Ruiz made a lot of mistakes but also got some push. Didn't notice Kugler much, which must mean he did alright.
Not noticing a new starter against our DL is very good.
Prior to the game Harbaugh did an extended interview on radio with the radio guys.
He basically said 3 guys are set for the fall; if you really think a tackle is going to show up in July and displace someone on the OL I guess maybe that's a possibility (Cole!) but he basically said JBB was a starting tackle in the fall.
I am paraprhasing but he went through almost everyone:
- Said Cole was their best OL and would play...somewhere
- Said Bredenson was next best OL
- Said JBB would be "a tackle"
I read that as those 3 are assured spots. He put them in a "group" if you will.
Then he moved on to talk about Kugler and Onwenu. Felt like those were next 2.
Said Ruiz did some nice things and that some new freshman would be coming in later this year.
Only then did he begin to talk about other guys like the Runyans of the world. Sort of generic "nice things" said about development about everyone else. Also mentioned Ulizio was banged up and probably not going to play much.
My take from his comments was JBB is much more secure in his job than the board presumes and Onwenu is not quite as much of a sure thing but still a pretty sure thing. And Kugler sounds like he will be involved heavily.
Based on what he said it sounded like ot me we're talking
- JBB
- Bredeson
- Kulger or Ruiz
- Onwenu
- Cole
the info! I hope JBB has a spot becuase he's good not becuase we have to put someone there. I am sure Filiaga coming in and starting is a pipe dream, but I hope Filiaga at least pushes for a spot.
I don't think that is accurate. I liked what I saw from the starting OL. They were mostly going against what will be a top 5 DL nationally and they didn't get obliterated. Now, this is partly due to my expectationts being extremely low, but I thought they looked like a line that could be good enough to beat Florida and then develop over the season. I don't think the OL changed my outlook for the season, which is what I wanted to see today.
Agreed. JBB didn't even play, so they were down a guy and still weren't generally completely overwhelmed by a proven commodity in this D line. Most of the havok generated in the pass rush came from the blitz (so much for defenses going vanilla in exhibition games. Not Don Brown.)
I think the OL will be solid enough not to ruin the season altogether, but not good enough to make us a serious playoff contender. More talent than last year but a lot less experience and time in the S&C program.
We'll be fine on the line if we can stay healthy. Now if we start losing guys - especially Cole - then we get into trouble pretty fast.
Sounded like they had 6 guys they'd be comfortable running out there. Just cannot take an injury there and unfortunately it's a spot you have 5 chances to take on an injury.
I remember in late 2015 we felt the DL had oodles of depth ...then Glasgow tore his pectoral and the DL looked awful down the middle late in the year. So the wrong 1 guy can certainly end in disaster and I feel like that's the case with OL.

Love that Peters looks like the real deal and a serious threat to Speight. Should push both of them through the summer and into fall camp bec. Speight has to realise now more than ever that he could lose his job come September.
And with both pushing hard through the summer they will push the rest of the youngsters on O too.
This take cannot be underestimated, and I say it as someone who als has run afoul of the sun today. Coming out of a dry, cool winter and wet, cool early spring, I forgot - like many Michigan residents - that the sun can still hurt in April.
So tomorrow, for Easter brunch, I'll have a sunburn, but Michigan football in some form, so whatever.
Our defense goes two-deep and our offense goes one-deep. I'm not sure if the defense let up (they did switch Rashan Gary) or if the offensive line improved (whoever the right tackle was on the Blue squad to start was getting killed in the first few series) but the running backs had success up the middle. Was McCray playing? I didn't hear his name called all game. As advertised, the O-line was the only thing that looked like a weak link today.
He played, but I'm not sure he played much after the first couple possessions. Ditto Chris Evans.
To be fair, Alabama has won all of their recent titles with every position on the field dominating, deep with the best 5 star talent money can buy, except for the qb. Our love of boring safeties is mirrored by their love of boring quarterbacks.
But to be fair to your point, Speight wasn't boring today. My poor nerves..
Disagree. Bama has nothing but 4 and 5 stars in the QB room. Its the offense they run that makes the QB look like crap. That is one boring, bland, efficient offense.
I hate Alabama.
Haven't watched the Alabama offense in the last couple of years, I guess. Lane Kiffin is a lot of things but he was definitely a terrific OC.
He was.
Speight probably hasn't lost his job to this point, but it would be nice to see him come out and take it on the public stage. It was grind time from the start of the Iowa game on last year, and he didn't exactly take the job and run away with it. Today's showing obviously does not help.
He'll have to work to keep his job. It wasn't a great day for him today and I am concerned that he isn't taking his game to the next level. He had good footwork today as usual but his decision-making was suspect (throwing into double coverage) as was his accuracy (which was affected by the wind) and timing.
Nothing that can't be fixed, but he'll have to earn the job with Peters and O'Korn playing as well as they did today.
A poor day is a poor day - everything else counts too. But sometimes you need to hear the people behind you catching up so that you know you've got to pick up your pace...
And knowing that he has to keep improving. But still, he's the player that he is, and he is certainly a better QB than he showed yesterday. Maybe he just wasn't feeling that great yesterday, mabe he just had a "whatever" attitude about a practice game that doesn't mean anything and dogged it a bit. Who knows?
Still a long way until opening day, and I certainly don't think he's locked in as the starter. No reason why Peters couldn't pass him some time before the end of the season, but I would not say that's happened yet based only on yesterday.
