I can't believe we have lost Emerson, Lake and Arnold Palmer in the same year...

Well I for one loved their music and still do they were vwery good sad another sad day for the music world.
December 8th, 2016 at 5:34 PM ^
Did you have a stroke while writing this or did I have one while reading it?
December 8th, 2016 at 5:07 PM ^
You answered your own question. The gatekeepers of the RnR HOF - don't like Prog Rock.
December 8th, 2016 at 5:15 PM ^
It's a money pit for mainstream nostalgia. only things I saw there that I loved were Muddy Water's beat-to-crap guitar and Duane Allman's sunburst Gibson. Prog Rock doesn't pull the dollars.
December 8th, 2016 at 6:26 PM ^
Ray of Light is a truly great album but beyond that -- ugh! In 20 years the entire museum will be a monument to 1990's and early 2000's hip hop.
December 8th, 2016 at 5:28 PM ^
They really don't like Prog Rock. I mean holy shit, look at these bands that are NOT in. What a travesty.
- Yes
- Jethro Tull
- King Crimson
- ELP
The more I look into this the more angry I get!
December 9th, 2016 at 10:28 AM ^
The Moody Blues aren't in either.
December 8th, 2016 at 6:24 PM ^
The entire HOF is a monument to Jann Wenner's musical tastes which definitely favor the mid to late-70s NYC and London punk scenes. My tastes definitely lean to prog rock -- Pink Floyd (obviously), Genesis (both pre and post Gabriel, Supertramp (pre-Breakfast in America), Alan Parsons Project, Rush (Johnny Atkins' favorite band) and Moody Blues. You can hear some prog rock influence in The Who and Zeppelin which makes them both such fantastic bands since they cross genres. Not a big fan of Yes, Styx or King Crimson.
December 8th, 2016 at 6:40 PM ^
I wasn't a huge Yes fan, mostly due to only knowing their radio pop crap. But then I gave "Close to the Edge" album a listen and was hooked. "The Yes Album" and "Fragile" are both amazing too. Basically, all of their earliest stuff (shocker).
King Crimson I could see being tougher to get into.
December 8th, 2016 at 5:07 PM ^
Funny you should mention the rock and roll hall of fame but there are a lot of groups and artist that are still not in and it makes you wonder why.
December 8th, 2016 at 5:34 PM ^
But the HOF did admit Neal Diamond so we have to assume they are staying true to principles!
December 8th, 2016 at 6:27 PM ^
Mariah Carey must be next.
December 8th, 2016 at 5:52 PM ^
El-P is one of my favorite rappers ever, but ELP was never a favorite band of mine. It always stinks to see any of these guys die. Big Syke from 2pac's thug life/outlawz group passed away this week too.
December 8th, 2016 at 5:02 PM ^
but we never saw or met him. beautiful property in suburban NY with about 15 acres and, (wait for it) a lake.

Clear, and always on key. Examples from his KC days for the curious:
1) Epitaph - 'In the court of the crimson king'
2) In the wake of Poseiden' - album of same name
What he did with ELP wasn't Prog Rock, it always had more pop overtones.
December 8th, 2016 at 5:21 PM ^
Epitaph is just about perfect. Lake's vocals, nice guitar, and all of the mellotron building together.

In the Court of the Crimson King - the first and best prog rock album
December 8th, 2016 at 6:17 PM ^
"Clear and always on key". Bands of today could learn a good lesson from listening to Greg Lake. Find a lead singer who can sing well. And also, write good music. Yes, I'm an old guy who was a teenager when ELP was starting out. This is one of my very favorite ELP songs:

Good tune man! That sounds like what music is supposed to sound like. Now off my lawn!
December 8th, 2016 at 8:27 PM ^
Thanks for reminding me of this one.
They don't make 'em like they used to.
December 8th, 2016 at 5:06 PM ^
Good lord, three RIP threads in four consecutive posts.
What a crappy day.....
December 8th, 2016 at 5:27 PM ^
...but John Glenn had a great, great run. I don't put a 95-year old remotely in the same ballpark as a 23-year old.
December 8th, 2016 at 5:35 PM ^
2016 has been a rough year.

3 of last 4 board posts are RIP.
I've had about enough of 2016.
December 8th, 2016 at 5:29 PM ^
Before he was in ELP he was in King Crimson. The King is dead, Long live the King.
December 8th, 2016 at 5:36 PM ^
The kids probably think Kanye West wrote this one...

Wow, 2016. Greg Lake and John Glenn in the same afternoon.
I was actually just listening to "Brain Salad Surgery" this morning in my office. I have always been a huge progressive rock fan and this is indeed depressing news. It was ELP and a few other groups that, as a kid, got me into synthesizers and synthesized sound.
RIP, Greg Lake.

I'm not a massive Prog Rock guy, but I always thought this story about Sherman Hemsley and his love for Prog Rock was amazing: http://www.magnetmagazine.com/2009/03/05/george-jefferson-worlds-biggest-gong-fan/

I didn't expect that connection.

RIP Greg Lake. Really sad after Keith Emerson lost his battle with health issues greatly reducing his ability to play.
From the Begining is a classic. Its actually very easy to play on guitar, even the beginning part with the picking is just moving shapes around on the guitar in standard tuning. Anyone who plays should give this one a try. Sounds great, fun to play and not that difficult.

ELP when I was 8 through 15. A lot of great songs. So Palmer is the lone survivor of ELP. I liked Lake's Father Christmas song back in '72. Brings back childhood memories!
December 8th, 2016 at 9:27 PM ^
Just loved these guys. Saw them at Cobo in 1977 and was blown away. Wore a groove through the Brain Salad Surgery record.

Back in my high school athletics days, elp's "Tarkus" was my favorite album to spin when I got pumped up for a game or track meet.
Later, "Brain Salad Surgery" was one of the best to catch a buzz to. Just thinking about it makes me want to fire up a bong!
But most of all, Greg Lake's acoustic songs were just sooooo beautiful. YouTube his solo performance of "Still You Turn Me On" if you need convincing.
