OT - Orange Bowl / Miami Things to do

Submitted by Nickel on

Some people had mentioned a few things in the Parking / Tailgating thread, but I thought this would be a good place to post any must-see or must-eat places in South Florida for people coming to town for the Orange Bowl aside from the obvious places that people think of like South Beach.

I go down there for work quite a bit.  There's tourist things to do obviously.  Some of the things I've done is

Things to do and places to go
Ft Lauderdale Park - Good running trails/hiking
Pampano Park - more running/hiking areas.
drive down into the keys.  This can be a lengthy trip depending on how far down you want to go.
Everglades Airboat Tours.  There are plenty of these, but I took my family on the this one.  It's ran by the Gator Boys.  https://www.evergladesholidaypark.com/
South Beach.  It's expensive to eat.  Parking is limited and about $20 if you find the right spot.
The beach.  I personally prefer Fort Lauderdale Beach as it's less packed.  January though it may not be the nicest place to visit.  it'll be warm, but not beach weather likely.
Lion Country Safari:  Drive through safari and walk through zoo
Oleta River State Park:  Kayaking, Paddle Boarding, Camping
Hugh Taylor Birch State Park:  more camping/kayaking etc...
Bonnet House
Stranahan House
Vizcaya Museum and Gardens

Fun primarily for kids
Funderdome
Zoo Miami
Miccosukee Indian Village
Miami Sequarium
Jungle Queen Riverboat cruise
Miami Childrens Museum

Shopping:
Galleria Mall
Pembroke Gardens
Bal Harbour Shops
Gulf Stream Park and Shoppes

Brewhouses:
Funky Buddah
Mack House
LauderAle
Hollywood Brewing Co
SaltWater
M.I.A Beer Company
Due South Brewing Co
Copperpoint Brewing Co
World of Beer

Nightlife/Bars
Hard Rock Casino
Gulfstream Park Racing and Casino
Round Up (Country)
Harrisons Wine Bar
Laser Wolf
mcSorely's Beach Pub
mango's

Food:
If you want to drop some serious coin, go to Joes Stone Crab.  It isn't cheap, but it's good and a block or so over from South Beach.
Blue Moon Fish Co
Stout
Tap42
YOLO - can get pricey
YardbirdS Southern Table and Bar
Baton G Restaurant
DIRT
4 Rivers Smokehouse - amazing BBQ

Coffee Shops - Be sure to find some authentic Cuban Coffee.  Talk about a jolt!
Warsaw Coffee Company
BREW urban Cafe
Undergrounds Coffeehaus
The Alchemist

That's all I can think of off the top of my head.  Those places all range from Miami to Fort Lauderdale.

Don't forget Jungle Island or the Miami Seaquarium if you're taking the kids. Both of these are in Miami, so it might be a bit of a drive from Fort Lauderdale. Everglades Holiday Park for an airboat tour is fun, though if it's cold (that means 60 here, you may not see a lot of gators. It should warm up during the days, and they'll be out of it does. Lion Country Safari is really cool too, though it is in West Palm Beach and costs about $30/person. However, you will see coupons for $8.00 off on the counters of gas stations. These are real and definitely help. Other than that, Poseidon really covered most of it.

I spent six months in Miami for work a couple years ago. I do not miss it. Wynwood is a cool artsy neighborhood with fun restaurants and bars and the Grove is one of the few walkable neighborhoods that is worth a look as well. However, expect horrific traffic and the dumbest/least intuitve drivers that you'll likeyl come across.

Seattle is pretty awful when it comes to drivers. But otherwise agree. If you like interesting, artsy vibe- Wynwood is the place to go. I'd uber and avoid driving altogether.

If you're into clubs and what not then there are tons of options in Miami.
I don't have any specific recommendations other than one strange club i went to that has a dance floor, bowling alley and ice skating area too.

I'm a rare bird! ;-) But true..

I pretty much don't love clubs per se, but i do enjoy a place with good music, some dancing, but you can still be social- which is why I usually just go out in Fort Lauderdale, not usually Miami. For Miami- definitely Wynwood, and to a lesser extent Brickell. Tap 42 is also a good chill spot.

My favorite spot in Fort Lauderdale is Riverside Market Cafe. It's super cool, great for a variety of beers- and a decent looking crowd too. It's a little remote, but definitely worth it.

It depends on what you're looking for when you say "overrated".  If you are looking for beautiful women, there probably isn't another city in the world (per capita) that has the talent of Miami.

Wynwood, Coconut Grove (although locals will tell you the Grove is overrated), Coral Gables, or Brickell--mostly everyone will find something to their liking in one of those neighborhoods.

Also, you can have a great time in Miami without ever going to South Beach.  I'd recommend avoiding it entirely.

I hear you can party in the city where the heat is on, all night on the beach til the break of dawn.

Also I hear the base and the sun set low.

I'm from Miami and live here now. What you should do depends on where you stay -- the traffic is real and the driving is as terrible as others have suggested.

If you're staying in Dade then hit up Wynwood, eat at Zak the Baker (or Kush I guess) and walk around. Then uber down a couple of miles and go to La Carreta in Little Havana for cuban coffee and food. All the other touristy stuff (Everglades, Zoo, Fairchild Gardens) is too far away or lame so just be like everyone else and relax at the beach. And while South Beach may sound played out, the girls (and guys I guess) really are phenomenal to look at...better in the summer once all the tourists leave but still pretty nice. If you're into clubs do your research first.

If you're staying in Broward then Ft Lauderdale is all there is (except Sawgrass Mills outlet mall I guess). Somewhat of a more chill hangout than Miami just far whiter and not as hip. I suggest Tom Jenkins for BBQ and Jaxson's ice cream.

If you're staying in North Dade or South Broward then all you can do is hang out at the beach, go to the Aventura mall, or play golf.

Oh, and if you're into strip clubs ignore that massive list from the poster above and just go to Tootsie's.
