Most Points in a season
After today's drubbing, I decided to see where team 137 ranks historically.
Year | Coach | Record | Points |

11-0-0 | 644 |
1904 |
Yost |
10-0-0 | 567 |
1903 |

1901 |

11-0-0 | 550 |
1905 |
Yost |
12-1-0 | 495 |
2003 |
Carr |
10-3-0 | 460 |
2011 |
Hoke |
11-2-0 | 433 |
2016 |

1976 |
Schembechler |
10-2-0 | 432 |
We are currently tied at 8th all time with at least 4 games left to play. Currently averaging 48 points per game, if we continue on that pace for the last 4 games, we end up with 624 points, which is good for 2nd most all time. Of course, if we put up 48 against Ohio State, we might as well add a 5th game for the Big Ten championship game, which would have the potential to make this the highest scoring team in Michigan history.
It's a long shot, but would be amazing. As it stands, this team should end up being the highest scoring team since the Yost teams.

this team will have scored more points in 10 games than any non-Yost team did in an entire season. That is indeed impressive.

The '03 offense was, until (we hope) this year, the best Michigan offense of my lifetime. Remember, we were killing everybody that year. Really a crime that we lost to Oregon and Iowa with all of the talent on that team.
This team seems set to destroy those non-Yost totals. Extremely impressive. And doing it with talent that is, frankly, not that highly rated. Think of what some more top five classes will put on the field here.

...because that would probably mean we won a National Championsihp.
644 - 432 = 212
Best case scenario: 15 game season (hopefully culminating in a National Championship)
213 points in 6 remaining games = 35.5 ppg
Non-playoff / non-conference championship scenario: (13 game season since bowl eligible)
213 points in 4 remaining games = 53.25 ppg

I think we can get to Number 2 , Highly doubt we get to number 1.
Thats ok with me since 1902 did it in 11 games and it would take us 14 or 15 .

I feel a terrible sense of horror going down my spine everytime I see a Hoke and RRod association with Michigan......I am so happy it was all just a bad dream......Thank you football gods for Coach Jim Harbaugh!

Of course, if we put up 48 against Ohio State, we might as well add a 5th game for the Big Ten championship game, which would have the potential to make this the highest scoring team in Michigan history. It's misleading though, as touchdowns are worth six points now, whereas they were worth five points in Yost's era. To make a fair comparison we'd have to add an extra point for all of the TDs the Yost teams scored.

College football by 1900 had become a big deal. The Big Ten was founded in 1895. We were much better than our competition, but that doesn't mean the sport itself wasn't well-established.

For perspective, the 1997 national championship team never scored more than 38 points in a game and averaged 26.8 points per game.

Just for laughs I got the points totals from that 1902 team. I don't think we will ever match this kind of dominance:
- 3.1 Michigan 88, Albion 0
- 3.2 Michigan 48, Case 6
- 3.3 Michigan 119, Michigan Agricultural 0
- 3.4 Michigan 60, Indiana 0
- 3.5 Michigan 23, Notre Dame 0
- 3.6 Michigan 86, Ohio State 0
- 3.7 Michigan 6, Wisconsin 0
- 3.8 Michigan 107, Iowa 0
- 3.9 Michigan 21, Chicago 0
- 3.10 Michigan 63, Oberlin 0
- 3.11 Michigan 23, Minnesota 6
They allowed 12 points all season. Jesus Christ.

Great thread and love the comparison table. If you study the Yost teams in more detail, they dominated on D, and not just by way of all the shutouts They got a lot of turnovers, 3 and outs, defensive scores, etc., often giving the Offense a short field, greatly helping the gaudy scoring. Bo was a student of those teams and I saw interviews where he related these facts, as well. It was a lesson to him that you win with defense.

Sorry, not taking the time to format, but here are the point differentials. 2016 squad is currently a #9 all time in point differential. Right on pace again with the 1976 team. Perhaps it would be a good Diary topic for someone to compare/contract 2016 with the 1976 team since they seem to be very equal in terms of scoring.
Year | Coach | U-M pts | Opp pts | Spread |
1902 | Fielding Yost | 644 | 12 | 632 |
1903 | Fielding Yost | 565 | 6 | 559 |
1901 | Fielding Yost | 550 | 0 | 550 |
1904 | Fielding Yost | 567 | 22 | 545 |
1905 | Fielding Yost | 495 | 2 | 493 |
1947 | Fritz Crisler | 394 | 53 | 341 |
1971 | Bo Schembechler | 421 | 83 | 338 |
1976 | Bo Schembechler | 432 | 95 | 337 |
2016 | Jim Harbaugh | 432 | 96 | 336 |

Also, if we continue averaging 48 ppg and averaging opponents to 11ppg, with four more games, we move to 6th place in point differential behind only the Yost teams.
If we dream big and win a NC at this rate, we move into a tie for 2nd place all time with a 559 point differential.
By any scoring measure, this team is historic on both sides of the ball.
November 6th, 2016 at 10:26 PM ^
What's makes it even better is that we have a defense that can stop anyone and it's not just a offensive game to outscore the opposite team.
