Keeping an eye on Hurricane Matthew

Submitted by Phil Brickma on

The latest NOAA update (11 a.m. ET) says Hurricane Matthew is churning north faster than previously predicted, with the bulk of the storm expected to sit off the New Jersey coast by Sunday morning.  My fairly uninformed guess would assume we should expect heavy winds and rain Saturday night ahead of the storm.

Wouldn't it make sense for player and fan safety for Rutgers to move the game to an earlier kick to get ahead of the storm as early as possible? Local forecasts haven't been adjusted yet, but if NOAA still expects it to hold hurricane-force winds on Sunday, it isn't something I would screw around with.

NOAA has nailed down a track window for Matthew keeping it off the Florida Coast for Thursday and Friday. But it will be close enough to bring damaging winds, heavy rains and tidal surges to all of the Eastern FL Peninsula.  However, as it moves northward, the predicted track gets less certain. This is because of the complicated weather features in the Western Atlantic and Central US that will affect it's track north of the Georgia and South Carolina coastal areas. The game isn't going to get moved up with the current uncertainty. I could see it happening later in the week as the NOAA Track predictions firm up. A landfall in or around North Carolina early Friday morning will be worst case. Staying well off shore as Matthew moves North and East is best case. My bet is that it won't get moved; that the game will be played under wet condtions much like those of last week in AA. IOW, not that bad. Maybe a bit more wind.

I'd say that preventing potential danger to the teams and all people attending qualifies as "absolutely necessary".

Besides, if the game gets delayed or suspended because of hte weather, then ESPN2 is screwed into showing some other game anyhow.

i know they and the unversiies want to capture big, fat ratings from the NJ/NY markets but forcing fans to sit in and players to play in a hurricane is crazy.

ABC is scheduled to show Notre Dame @ NC State at Noon on Saturday.  That game is in significant danger of being cancelled/postponed.

So, if U-M @ Rutgers was moved up to Noon, there will likely be an available ABC/ESPN TV Network.

As for the 7 PM ESPN2 spot, ESPN would just likely move up the ESPNU game (Texas Tech/K-State) and just put GoalLine on ESPNU.  No issues there.

I would like to see this game played at night, other commitments have prevented me from watching the game live for the last 3 weeks.

Fortunately I was able to DVR and avoid hearing scores all 3 weeks.  I do not like watching knowing that the game is already over because when things go poorly I am tempted to fast forward.

Last year, the B1G announced the move of the Maryland game on Thursday afternoon.  I expect they'll follow a similar track with monitoring this game.

EDIT:  I am a tiny bit slower than pudge44, which makes me pudge43.

Correct, of course, but the question remains - how will they do under abnormal conditions such as potentially significant rain and wind?

Better question - are the boats an NCAA violation? Should Rutgers make boats available to all students to make sure things are on the level?

I am extremly selfish and hoping this gets moved to noon because I have a wedding Saturday night....or even better, lets keep it a night kick and move it to Friday!

This is strictly selfish reasons here, but I'm going to sit on my own little island and hope that the game stays at the same date and time. I am getting married on Saturday (UofM - themed), and the start time is perfect to turn on at the reception hall to enjoy with my guests.

Nope... I've been keeping it clean since LSA's post prior to the Hawaii game.

If it's a Michigan-themed wedding, I was wondering if there was a Go Blue - M Club Supports You banner they'd walk under after he kisses the bride?

I can't be the only one with plane or train tickets into NY that morning from elsewhere in the northeast. Moving the game after we have all relied on it beign at 7 would suuuuck for a lot of fans.

I say keep the same kick-off time but move the game to safe neutral site, like Boulder, Colorado. The Buffs are out of town, so there should be plenty of hotel space for the M faithful. I would be willing to put up a dozen at my house. On Friday night we can all go watch Dylan McCaffrey play, then watch Michigan beat the Knights on Saturday night at Folsum Field.

Expecting great football weather this weekend.

Sometimes the solution is simple. I'm being totally objective and rational.

My mom's on Skidaway Island, which, OK she can take care of getting herself inland if she needs to.  But, more importantly, I'm supposed to be going to Myrtle Beach the following weekend and I"m afraid our accommodations may be compromised.

moved because the timing of the storm would have made it difficult for Michigan to safely fly out of Baltimore because of high winds.  Not because weather would affect the game.

No one knows where Hurricane Matthew will be as of Saturday night. It may go out to sea after hitting the Carolina coast, it may stall over the Carolinas, or pick up speed... there are no guarentees other than the fact that when the ball is kicked off in Piscataway, Hurricaine Jim will wreak havoc on our biggest rivals!
