early game day morning/can't sleep thread

Submitted by UM Fan from Sydney on

I went to bed around 10:30 simply so I could get more sleep, but of course it did not work. I started awaking around 3AM, dozed off a few times here and there, and then about twenty minutes ago, I just said "screw it" and got out of bed. It's a beautiful morning here in Manhattan.  Michigan football starts in nine hours and Above & Beyond Group Therapy 200 starts in eight-and-a-half hours. I have double excitement, which is the likely reason I cannot sleep.

Anyone else having trouble sleeping? Dare I say, "what are you drinking?"

7:02 EDT at present. Woke at 5:20. Horrible day yesterday. Our next-door neighbor's son was killed in a car acident last Saturday (I learned of this during the Colorado game). He was close friends with my son (and our whole family) for 12 years. And, to make this doubly tragic, when the police came to his house to inform his parents of the accident/death, his grandfather and grandmother were there at that time. His grandfather - upon hearing the news - had a heart attack and died right there in their living room.

Their funeral/send-off was yesterday afternoon, evening, and on into the night.

Trying to make sense of it all.

No, there are no answers. No words.

The best I could come up with after going through this with our neighbors and my family this past week is that, while the universe is unfathomably immense, seemingly random & chaotic and we are - in a relative sense - nothing at all, the way to face (or pehaps, even defy) this randomness and chaos and nothingness is to be kind and loving to the other nothings while we have the very small time to do so.

Like Morty said to Summer (Rick and Morty, Episode 17): "Nobody exists on purpose, nobody belongs anywhere, we're all going to die. Come watch TV."

And, "Go Blue".

The open practice for the band at the stadium last night was great. They're featuring the musical theatre department (remember the N.Y. Phil last year) and the closer is their version of the Victors that brought tears to this old Alum's eyes. Oh yeah --I'm going mountain biking in a few before some of that cancer fundraising beer by Elbel.

I think it starts around 10:00, maybe it's 9:00.  I should know since my son is in the band (Alto sax) and I have to head down to help setup for the alto's pregame meal. Oh, as soon as I finish my coffee I'm off for a mountain bike ride though. Maybe see you out on the trails...

So wait, you're not actually in Sydney, you're just from there? Well I don't know who you are anymore. Let me see your birth certificate! #mgobirther

Just coming up on 7:20 AM EDT here, all of 20 minutes from the foot of the stadium. My kids, who are not like their father and don't believe in sleeping in, came streaming into the bedroom demanding to know the location of various devices because there is Pokemon to catch up on, more Voltron (the Netflix reboot) to watch, and all those things you do before games.

I grabbed my phone, made it to the sofa, turned on the news and started checking MGoBlog. I wish the coffee made itself, but my psychic connection to the pot is obviously not where it should be.

I work 3rd shift every Friday night/saturday morning, but I've recently started leaving my full time job early on Friday so I can get home and sleep. I'm fairly awake at the moment despite having worked all night. unfortunately I have to work again in the evening, so I'll probably go back to bed around kickoff. at least I'll get to see the kids play some soccer this morning.

but I slept for a solid 6 hours last night which is better than average for me. I am drinking coffee, a medium bodied blend from the mountains of Colombia (spelled it right!). Does anyone even think the Nittanies have a chance today? I've seen/heard Lion prognosticators and to a man they think they are going down, some even venture to say in a blowout. Hopefully, the Wolverines play well; I would like to see a blowout mostly because I feel we aren't viewed nationally as a true National Championship contender, that we aren't on par with the Ohio State's and Alabama's of the world; if we are to be thought of as a 'Natty' kind of team, we need to lay a beatdown on Penn State today.

Looking forward to checking out other games as well. I like seeing what our Big Ten brethren are up to. I'll be checking in on the Wisky/Sparty tilt, I think that will be a good game if the Badgers QB plays effectively. Wondering if Iowa will get back on track against our hated rivals from New Jersey. Wondering if Rutgers will have another one of those crazy comebacks they've been having this year. Is Nebraska for real? All this and more later today!

I work nights. So 646 central is darn early for me to be up. I went to bed early and I have a list of things to do today. So I didn't sleep long knowing I had a list. I may have to take 2 11 year Olds shopping so I might not even catch the game, that's a downer.

You douche, then have trouble sleeping?  Just trying to clarify...

/locked the thread!

Yeah, that Utah-SC ending was a great finish!  4 for 4 on fourth down attempts - Whittingham had a set of brass balls working last night!  But that dive over center was open on 4th & 1 every single time.  And this, my friends, is merely one reason why Clay Helton is not the right coach for USC.

Gonna watch game on phone in all likelihood. Mgowife's birthday is tomorrow and we're celebrating on Put-in-Bay so my guess is I won't have access to it life.

Coffee, some breakfast, then a boatload of work before the game starts.  Sunday will be the Virginia State Fair all day.  Its only 20 minutes from home, and the kid LOVES it.

Pouring rain in Long Island at 2 AM woke me up and that was pretty much all she wrote. On the bright side, headed for Ann Arbor next week for the game, a meet-up with my old roommates, and a visit with my now senior son.

On Game Day Eve. I didn't realize there were so many fanatics like me out there. I'm already obsessing about the MSU game 10/29, well in advance. I was sure we'd beat them until I saw what they did to ND. I'm hoping ND is just that bad. If I had to choose, I'd take a win over MSU instead of a win over Ohio State. I never thought I'd feel that way. MSU was just irritating and insignificat for so long. At least when you lose to the Buckeyes, you can just go on with your life and wait til next year. When you lose to MSU the aliens all around us never shut up. We really need to put a stop to that next month. Hoping to hear the sweet sound of silence walking out of Spartan Stadium that day.
