Steve Lorenz: Mailbag questions

Submitted by Steve Lorenz on

Hey guys,

After talking to Ace and Brian for the last few weeks about it, we agreed on me coming on to do a weekly mailbag on Michigan recruiting.

I believe the plan will be to run it on Tuesdays. I am assuming the MGoAudience may have some different style recruiting questions they want to know about and I think it will be fun to cover some different angles on the topic.

My plan is to take five-ish questions each week with some fleshed out answers for you guys to chew on. Anything recruiting related is really open game IMO, so have at it and I'll have something ready for Tuesday.

year players and draftable players (Hurst, Mone) on the DL, how many DTs and DEs do you project in the final class?

Further, do you expect any "reach" signees on the DL to boost numbers?

...I'd love to see a "Michigan Staff Xmas List" kind of a thing, like if they could draft their class then the leftovers would be recruited by the rest of college football.

Or whatever makes sense to you in that vein.

with our biggest games on the road this season, is that affecting our ability to pill in big time recruits for officials on Saturdays this fall? what are the biggest already scheduled officials that could make a major impact on this class?

Many before me have already offered better questions than I am likely to fomulate, but I think this is an awesome idea. I'm looking forward to your selections and the answers.

Harbaugh is a recruiting hurricane. But what about the rest of the coaching staff? What impressions do you get about the other coaches when it comes to recruiting?

Just curious about how the coaching staff manages their time when there are recruits visiting.  It would seem the weekend is mostly occupied with the home game at hand, the Team still stays at a hotel Friday night to avoid distractions, correct?  Or is that a time window when Coach can break away and leave others in charge?

I'm guessing there are surely other staff members involved to conduct academic tours, etc, but surely these young men and their families need proper attention from the actual direct position and Head coaches.

lots of obsession over the Nike contract on our site. when you talk with recruits, do you have and concrete examples where a switch to Nike has either helped us land a recruit, or given us an "in" we otherwise would not have? I'm not talking about general recruits thoughts on Nike/Jordan, but actual cases where the apparel was a key decision point for a recruit.

A few related questions I have about East Coast recruiting: 1) Is M's recent success in New Jersey sustainable long-term, or is it fueled by the recent struggles of traditional East Coast powerhouses (like Penn State, Miami, etc.)? 2) Is James Franklin a net positive or negative for Penn State in the recruiting game? 3) Has the addition of Rutgers and Maryland significantly improved M's ability to recruit in the NYC and DC areas or has that just been a coincidence?

Steve,

Do you get the feeling this class will be stronger than last years?  If so, what specific influences are you hearing about, ie Nike/Jordan gear, Don Brown, Harbs' success in year one, et al.

Thanks!
