Optimism Attache

It sounds like you are saying that maybe the police are lying about Lochte lying to them, and that in fact Lochte told them the truth.

If we assume that during his interview with police Lochte told them a story that aligns with one of the many versions of the incident that he has recounted with the media, then it seems he did in fact lie to the police.

Just yesterday you were stating, with certainty and authority, that Lochte was covering up a visit to a brothel. Now it looks like he was covering up some rowdiness and property damage at a gas station. Still looks bad for Lochte, but your certainty yesterday has not yielded an accurate picture of the facts as we have them today.

And you're getting needlessly upset that people are questioning the details you are reporting.

Forgive me, but when you say "the people working on the story," what does that even mean? Americans? American journalists? Americans in foreign intelligence who are speaking to journalists? Are you an investigative journalist? I guess I'm just skeptical of unsourced reports from anonymous sources in a foreign nation who have at least as much incentive to lie as the athletes do, in my mind. That's where I was coming from.

However...all of that being said, I do think that, as this story evolves (as in, how it has evolved since my comment you responded to), I now believe Lochte is completely full of shit. (Link: http://summergames.ap.org/article/2-lochte-teammates-robbery-probe-pull…). The other swimmers have told the authorities that he was full of it. And yes, I do take the AP as a credible news source. But I guess, personally, that I wanted a little more backup before I'd believe anonymous message board comments and/or a tweet from an ABC journalist whom I have no prior impression of, vs. an American. I guess it shows my American bias, which I'm willing to admit.

So, in all, you were correct, but I also don't think it's insane for someone to want more evidence before forming an opinion. And, I was operating under the assumption that Lochte wouldn't be such a moron as to make up such a story. Well, lesson learned on my part: he *is* that dumb. Which I should've known.

But what if they made a recording and then it was altered. Even with a recording, we couldn't know truthfully, what Lochte told them. All we can know for sure is that Brazil is out for vengeance and would have detained Lochte for years if he didn't narrowly escape.

to a TV personality on camera.

From the OP's link

A Brazilian police source told ABC News that "one of the swimmers was seen on CCTV footage breaking down the door to the bathroom at the gas station and fighting with a security guard" on the night of the reported incident

The story should be "US Olympic Swimmer (which one?) Fights with Brazilian Gas Station Attendent after Breaking Down Bathroom Door"

There is an alleged crime there, and the Brazilian police would certainly be justified for detaining the swimmers for an actual alleged crime.

Now I'd like to see the Brazilian police produce the CCTV footage and let the chips fall from there.

Didn't this all start because Lochte called his mom to cancel his credit cards and told her he got robbed. Then she put it on social media. The swimmers then had to back up the story when it got out. Wow! Never lie to Moms.

But, that evidence the Brazilian police talk about doesn't prove that the morons weren't robbed. It only shows that they may also have committed some crimes. Definitely casts serious doubt on the swimmers' already low credibility.

EDIT: I think I Like Burgers' take above seems quite likely.

Oh my god, and the fact that he couldn't just cover it up but had to make headlines with that ridiculous story about him being so "cool" with a gun to his head... what a fucking tool.

But you believed the story yesterday...

Maybe the next time you want to lecture someone on the internet dont?

Still unclear to me if any of the other three did anything as part of this, or just got royally F-ed by Lochte going and telling a tale, and feeling forced to back it up.

Lochte got drunk, acted like a complete asshole, made up some bullshit story to piss on an already poor country in tough times to protect himself.

Pretty typical for him. Guy is a complete piece of shit.

You'll see his old, fat, drunk-swollen head in court in about 25 years on NBC for some drunken stupidity and everyone will nod thier head and say "Oh yea, I vaguely remember that idoit. Yep, seems about right." and he will go to jail.

Good for him. He had a good run.

An unnamed Brazilian source claims the whole story was fabricated, and an ABC reporter is reporting this. That does not, at all, mean it WAS fabricated. Nor does it mean the crux-- that a gun was pointed at them and they were robbed-- is incorrect. Also, fighting with security at a gas station...okay? Does that mean he couldn't also have been robbed? The ABC journalist in question's tweet, which everyone is picking up on, is at the following link: https://twitter.com/mattgutmanABC/status/766268427661029376?ref_src=tws…

ETA: Yeah, based on info that's come to light today...sure seems more and more like Lochte is just full of crap, actually.

to peice together that night, The Hangover style.  Lochte and crew go to the brothel, get their service, but wait, Lochte's wallet gets stolen.  He doesn't notice it until he gets to the store, where he is trying to buy more alcohol, probably Goldschlick Vodka.  Noting that his wallet is gone, he attempts to "steal the booze" like in Seth's fantasy in Superbad, but is tripped up by security on the way out leading to an altercation.

Wakes up with somebody else's baby in his room and a lion in the bathroom.  Calls mom crying.

Like it or not, it is a crossover story that has moved from sports (which, uh, we follow here on this blog) to pop culture. It's getting a lot of chatter on the social media channels I follow. Don't worry, we'll go back to fretting about OSU's recruiting class and the ability of our RBs to pick the right holes and Kyle Kalis and our shallow LB situation soon enough.
