[LOCKED] Lamont Wade "Second Level"

Submitted by DJEasy12 on

So, apparently the staff told Lamont Wade that he was a "second-level" player and needed to come to camp for an offer...now he says F U and he's the #58 player in the 247 Composite:

I'm totally cool with the come to camp and so we can evaluate you part, but....tact!! This is an Urban Meyer move, and not that great of a look for the staff.

MOD EDIT - I think we're going to lock this one just so the news stays here. I was hoping that maybe this one would go a little better than the first, but it isn't really, and I do in retrospect agree that maybe the first one should have been locked as a cautionary tale. My bad, folks. As always, we can talk about this one if you want. Either send a tweet or post in the mod sticky. - LSA

with a broken leg? That surely understands what the word Meritocracy means. Meh, seems pretty simple to me. Somebody is stirring a pot with nothing in it.

The above is "internet speak" used purely for entertainment purposes and in no way am I trying to say this is what the coaching staff would say to a potential recruit.

I did do that, but because presentation can be, well, all of the difference sometimes when it comes to whether a thread goes well or not, I think we're going to leave this one as it was put a bit better than the original. I mean, if it starts to head south, we'll talk, but it is relevant and really does - in some manner - fit into the parameters of news and discussion for the board because of the criticism levied against this staff here by a recruit, whatever weight you may give (none, in my case, but that's me).

"Meritocracy scares away Pennsylvania CB The Harbaugh Meritocracy has, if you can believe a series of tweets and/or Mark Snyder, scared off a fairly highly rated CB out of Pennsylvania. Per the article, the player dropped Michigan because the staff made attending an M camp a condition of the offer.

I know recruit shaming is frowned upon and generally for good reason - it is sour grapes 99.9 percent of the time. This is the 0.01 percent it isn't - boo fucking hoo to the very self-entitled Lamont Wade whose "dream offer" wasn't worth camping for."

The previous thread called the recruit self-entitled and worthy of recruit shaming.

I think the "2nd level" stuff was how he took their desire to see him in camp, that going to a camp is taken by him as needing to prove himself. maybe the staff said it but I doubt it.

Is Michigan's recent period of mediocracy. A kid Wade's age may not have very strong memories of UM. I guess this would be on the staff to attempt evaluating young talent just a tad sooner... at any rate, can't knock the kid because the staff didn't see his talent in time. That would be like us M fans blasting on the kids we were able to haul away from OSU due to the Buckeye staff being bullish on their offer to said player.

And? If you want the offer come and compete for it. Don't see the issue what's so ever, just because your highly ranked doesn't mean the coaches see you in the same light as the services.

I really doubt the staff - anyone on the staff - called this kid a second level player.  I have no doubt, though, that they told him they hadn't spent a lot of time looking and would like to see him in person.  UM is in on several other DB's higher on thier board, no doubt they are somewhat unfamiliar with this kid.  And everyone they want, they've seen in person.

Remember when Mattison said that One kid was too dumb to get into M?

This is probably a similar misunderstanding. I would not be surprised if M said they were interested and wanted to see him camp but they currently had a few targets above him I.e. A. Thomas and that FL kid currently committed to OSU. This is "second level" if you choose to take it that way.

Somewhat surprised this kid isn't a Spartan lean given the levels of disrespekt he already feels.

A similar (but less starz) situation is Donovan Johnson from MI. He does great at camps, has decent offers, and went to the Opening, but doesn't have an offer from M or MSU. Does this make him a bad player or is it just that both schools have higher targets and/or prefer a different (taller) type of corner?

In a world of scholarship limits, there are only ever going to be a handful of kids that don't have somebody above them.

Just about every recruit is "second level" when they want to play for one of the elite programs like Michigan, OSU, Alabama, etc.

I wouldn't take it personal.

We don't know what was said and not said and how it may have been said or the context in which it was said.  That being said please don't compare Urban and JH....Harbaugh gets the benefit of the doubt over a random_internet_article everyday in everyway cause that's what she said!

If Michigan is his dream school. and the coaches encourage him to come to camp so they can better evaluate where he might fit, why not go to camp and try to learn something from it? His response is very telling. Seems like he has the wrong attitude and probably won't fit in anyway.

These stories are like a Rorschach test, we tend to see what we want to see since no one except the player and Coach XYZ have any direct knowledge of what happened and even that is subject to human error in memory and interpretation.

That said, as true blue as I am I'm OK with our staff screwing up on occasion. It happens. The Swenson thing last year was a good example. It doesn't take anything away from overall quality of the staff, players, program or university. If someone did say something undiplomatically that's hopefully a lesson learned. If they didn't and it's a kid misremembering, that's a lesson learned too.

That's not what was on the original tweets that I seen in previous threads. If that is something he said then he's adding things to save face. I don't see it playing out at all like that. They probably told him they weren't sure yet and wanted to see him camp and he got butt hurt.

We don't know if he's second level until he plays for a year or two. He may well be second level, I don't care if he's ranked in the top five, nothing will be determined until he plays. Derrick Green was second or third level no? And yet the rankings said he was first level.

The coaches we have know foottball pretty well, I trust their judgement.

I agree with some of the previous post.  Even before his jump in the rankings, there may have been word out on Wade that gave the coaching staff pause.  What better way to see if Wade was the type of young man that could potentially be a positive addition to the program than by challenging him?  Moving on.
