OT: Pop Culture Misses
somewhat slow day on the board, so here's a thread to say what we've missed out on (For now). These typically double as good "Never have I ever" drinking game options but, anyway - what major pop culture stuff have you missed out on? now? Recently? "Back in the day"? Looking for things that were hugely popular that for, whatever reason, you never saw/heard/got into. (Feedback might also give you direction for your next Netflix binge, or your next set of concert tickets)
Mine are mostly large or small screen. I have never seen:
- The Sopranos
- Breaking Bad
- The Wire
- The Walking Dead
- Titanic
- Avatar
And besides Breaking Bad and The Wire, most people don't seem to think I've missed out on much. What are the things that you've (purposely or not) avoided in recent pop culture?

Other than clips of various scenes, the only episode of Friends I have seen in its entirety is the series finale and that was only because this girl I was seeing at the time it aired live was obsessed with that show, so I just waited through it with her. I just never got into that show.

I'm kidding. It was great. Get busy living or get busy dying.

I make it passed the border. I hope to see my friend and shake his hand. I hope the Pacific is as blue as it was in my dreams. I hope.
Not many better endings than that. A River Runs Through It may have an argument as could 25th Hour. But Shawshank is a very good movie with one hell of a last 5 minutes.

Nothing stops. Nothing... or you will do the hardest time there is. No more protection from the guards. I'll pull you out of that one-bunk Hilton and cast you down with the Sodomites. You'll think you've been fucked by a train! And the library? Gone... sealed off, brick-by-brick. We'll have us a little book barbecue in the yard. They'll see the flames for miles. We'll dance around it like wild Injuns! You understand me? Catching my drift?... Or am I being obtuse?
Really? That and Cool Hand Luke are the two best prison movies ever made.

It starts slow, but the end is fantastic. There's a creepy kid that hangs around, though.

I've "missed" the following without missing any of it:
- Alcohol
- Smoking
- Most popular music from the last 5 years
- Nearly all R-rated movies ever
- Most social networks
- Most TV shows
I'm blissfully unplugged from a lot of life's noise.

What about polygamy? I'd bet my first born that you have a beard.
April 21st, 2016 at 12:35 PM ^
You should really try out smoking and drinking because they're wonderful.
I note your bullet points omit "Drugs" and specifically "Nitrous Oxide". I think we can fairly conclude that you do a shit ton of drugs, which is why you are not plugged in. Except in a Dennis Hopper Blue Velvet way (a reference you won't get, becausethat movie was rated "R").
Not judging. Just observing.
Love the creativity, despite not understanding your reference. +1

If you have Netflix and need a bingeable show, try Person Of Interest. I have championing this show for a while now. It' right up there for me with Breaking Bad and Game of Thrones, and Lost. It's created by Jonathan Nolan (christopher nolan's brother) who wrote pretty much all of his brother's best movies. Michael Emerson and Jim Cavezeil are both excellent in it. It has the action of a 24 mixed with the smarts of a high concept sci fi show. It's about AI, and it's one of the few shows that I have seen that improves each season. Season 5 is airing in early May and should be a really good way to close out the series.

HALOL. Is that the show with Ben from Lost?
It' right up there for me with Breaking Bad and Game of Thrones, and Lost.
No way that show is anywhere as good as Breaking Bad and Game of Thrones.

Hell yeah, for me it's just as good as those shows. Game of thrones is great but there are storylines and plots in that show that are just boring. For ten episode season to have that much filler is unacceptable. Sorry, but Danny, or any of the kings landing stuff without tyrion is snoozefest city. Breaking Bad is great and closed strongly, but it had plenty of flaws. Too each his own, but Person of Interest started as a procedural show, and has developed into one of my favorite serialized shows. Every storyline introduced has been paid off. Ben from Lost(michael emerson) is fantastic, Jim Cavezeil is great in it.

I dug the first 2 or 3 seasons, but it kinda lost me after that. I did a big TV purge of "shows I kinda like but don't really have time for" that it got caught in.

Star Wars
I remember watching parts of the first three when I was younger, but don't remember anything. Saw two of the next three in theaters because my friends were into it in HS, but I slept through almost the entire movie.
Any show on CBS. I'm not old so I don't watch CBS.

Never watched Dexter, Breaking Bad, or the Wire (although I plan on rectifying this last one). Also never watched Parks and Rec or Community. I'll probably rectifying those at some point as well too, but I'm barely able to keep up with TV that's currently airing, let alone stuff that requires seasons worth of catchup.

Just watch the first 4 seasons of Dexter, they are great. The last 4, they are not.
Good to hear. I've made it to Season 5 and never got around to finishing, twice-ish. Same plot each season, different actors, imho.
Yeah, loved the John Lithgow season, season 4, but Dexter kind of blew it's wad too early. Season 2 was the search for the Bay Harbor Butcher, that should have been the final season.

Never have seen either. I quit Dexter after episode 3 because I couldn't stand his sister.
^^^upvote for your avatar. I agree that Dexter's sister is annoying as hell, but the show is pretty damn good for the first 4 seasons.
Yeah, the sister. Dumb as a bunch of rocks, that character.

You should definitely watch Breaking Bad. I tried watching the Wire recently and couldn't get into it.
Never seen one Lord of the Rings or any of the Hobbits...
I've never seen a Pop Evil concert.
The number of TV shows I watch is minimal.
- No cable, so therefore:
- No ESPN
- No HBO
- No Mad Men, No Walking Dead, No Sopranos,
- No Dexter, No Breaking Bad, No Lost,
- No Dancing with the Stars, No Reality TV
I watched "Downton Abbey" with my wife. That's the last regular TV show of any kind I watched. And I've seen several episodes of "Blind Spot." That's it.
Social media, I do have a FB account, but post minimally. However, No twitter, No instagram, No other social media.
I didn't see "The Force Awakens." I have never watched a Batman movie. I generally don't watch any movies based comic books. Oh, and I have basically avoided "Fast and Furious" movies and Transformer movies.
I'm not much of one for big concerts. No Palooza events, no rock or rap concerts, no Madonna, no Migos, no Lady Gaga, no Rolling Stones, No Rihanna, No Justin Bieber, No Drake, No country concerts, No Adele, No Taylor Swift. I'm afraid I have lost touch, and don't even listen to what's popular on the radio.
I don't know what popular clothes are anymore. No skinny jeans. No horn rim glasses. No hoodies.
I've never owned a brand new car.
I like you, StephenRKass. You have the chops to know that Migos exists, but are comfortable enough in your own skin not to dab.
You might be the most or least interesting person on mgoblog.
With all due respect, I am far less interesting than Mr. Kass. Not even close.
I'm not even really a sports fan, if you go by the movies I haven't seen:
Hoosiers, Field of Dreams, The Natural, Bull Durham, Major League, Slapshot, Brian's Song, Any Given Sunday, Eight Men Out, Cobb, Breaking Away, Remember the Titans, Rudy, Karate Kid, North Dallas Forty, White Men Can't Jump, Miracle, Pride of the Yankees, Moneyball

I don't use social media at all and couldn't pick out Taylor Swift (or any current "star") in a line-up. Pop culture froze for me in approximately 1988 when I realized it was a waste of time. I prefer as much face to face time with family and friends as I can get - preferably playing Euchre. Also, I enjoy hard candy. Werthers Originals when available.
