OT: Pop Culture Misses

Submitted by JeepinBen on

somewhat slow day on the board, so here's a thread to say what we've missed out on (For now). These typically double as good "Never have I ever" drinking game options but, anyway - what major pop culture stuff have you missed out on? now? Recently? "Back in the day"? Looking for things that were hugely popular that for, whatever reason, you never saw/heard/got into. (Feedback might also give you direction for your next Netflix binge, or your next set of concert tickets)

Mine are mostly large or small screen. I have never seen:

  • The Sopranos
  • Breaking Bad
  • The Wire
  • The Walking Dead
  • Titanic
  • Avatar

And besides Breaking Bad and The Wire, most people don't seem to think I've missed out on much. What are the things that you've (purposely or not) avoided in recent pop culture?

Here is what I have been missing out on,

95% of social media(althouhg I am being worn down on that due to numerous out of town friends & family and for employment purposes)

90% of comic book movies

Avatar

GoT

Any Showtime, Starz, Encore, or Cinemax show

Breaking Bad

Walking Dead

Mad Men

I am sure there are a bunch more that I am forgetting and I agree with those above about The Sopranos is like the Rose Bowl, it's the Grandaddy of the all(with perhaps the Shield being the father for basic cable shows).

When people throw things at Iggy Pop I abstain. I like his music.

Never saw most of the shows talked about in this thread.

I just upgraded to a flip phone and despise anything with an apple on it.

I believe social media is how western civilization ends.

I didnt dress my daughter like a hooker as a toddler.

I dont identify with republicans or  democrats and think both parties have lost sight of who they are and who they should be serving.

I loved Howard the Duck. Of course I was aided by a naturally occurring but otherwise illegal substance.

Jeepin' I have also never seen

  • The Sopranos
  • The Wire

I just watched Breaking bad on Netflix about 6 months ago.

Saw Titanic when it came out though.

I basically did not see any movies between 2004 and 2015 or so.

I don't think Titanic and Avatar are that big of misses. I think they were pretty mediocre movies. Benefitted from hype more than anything.

James Cameron hasn't made a good movie since Terminator 2

Back when I was in grad school I was forced to watch this cartoon a couple of Sunday nights. It was terrible, and I couldn't undrstand its appeal to the undergrads that thought it was so good. It think it was called The Simpsons. After a series of disappointments and total waste of money paying for movies, the last movie I saw in a movie theater was Waterworld. That movie just ended it for me. Later acclaimed movies like American Beauty (with a surprise ending just as "surprising" as The Crying Game, neither of which nobody refers to as classics, nor anyone even bothers to watch) just confirmed my opinion. GoT? GTA? I have no idea.

I always found Prince to be vastly overrated - may he rest in peace. But Freddy Mercury he is not. Don't do social media. I was without a mobile for about a year and didn't miss it. Never watched the wire or breaking bad. I don't have much of an attention span for television these days. And rap music is awful. That is all for now.

I don't really care for music before the 90's because I was born in the 90's. As far as movies go, the biggest thing I think I haven't seen is star wars except for the first episode, which I only saw recently. TV shows, maybe it's easiest to say what I HAVE watched obsessively: Lost, 24, Alias, HIMYM, Heroes, Supernatural. Most of them are done and nowadays I don't even own a TV or really care to.
