Paul Finebaum lobs smack from the cheap seats at Harbaugh

Submitted by Maizen on

He got petty and personal today...

"I think Jim Harbaugh's problem is he's never grown up. He just doesn't have any maturity".

"At some point you like to look at a head football coach at a major university, which Michigan is, and see an adult, see someone that is mature, see someone that doesn't throw tantrums on the sidelines, that doesn't always cause division like he did at San Francisco."

"At some point you have to graduate from being the spoiled kid to someone who is respected, and I'm not sure he has quite reached that yet."

"I'll tell you who he reminds me of a little bit, Lane Kiffin at Tennessee, who clearly didn't know what he was doing, who was out of control, who was like a puppy running into walls, and in some respects that's Jim Harbaugh now at Michigan."

"I will tell you what he is, and what will happen, he had a good first season, but he made fun of Hugh Freeze for wanting to spend time with his family, maybe Jim Harbaugh should actually spend some time working on special teams and he wouldn't have had the biggest special teams failure in college football history."

"He got run out of the stadium in what Joey Galloway calls the greatest rivalry in the country."

Do you know what makes Finebaum the happiest? Seeing daily threads about him on Michigan Football's premier blog. Stop it with the fucking threads. Stop feeding the troll.

I had heard of Finebaum's "rant" and wanted to call into his show to confront him.

First, if Finebaum is tired of Jim Harbaugh then there is one easy solution to his ailment. Stop talking about Jim Harbaugh! Finebaum can’t because of the makeup of today’s media and Harbaugh being a ratings draw.

I take issue with his attack on Coach Harbaugh. Paul claimed Harbaugh crossed a line when calling out Hugh Freeze but in mind Freeze’s comment was more offensive. Freeze indirectly stated that Harbaugh was not spending time with his family and being a good father because of these satellite camps. Anyone who follows Harbaugh’s twitter knows that Jim spends time with his family as he took his wife to France; went to his daughter’s career day; has breakfast with his kids; and puts their drawings in his office. The problem is (and this will be offensive) that the Hugh Freeze and Nick Sabans of this world haven’t figured out how to spend time with family and coach at satellite camps whereas Jim Harbaugh has.

I find it laughable and sad that the NCAA decided to express lane satellite camps when everyone and their grandma knows Ole Miss pays players to attend Ole Miss and the NCAA has done nothing about it.

Harbaugh’s comments toward Butch Jones were mild but necessary. Any coach in the country that Butch Jones critiques would be at least thinking the same thing. Worse Tennessee law officials may have broken the law when they notified the coach that players were being investigated for rape. You have a special kind of ethics down in Knoxville when football is given priority over a rape investigation and a potential rape victim. Paul is upset that Jim Harbaugh had the audacity to tell Butch that he needs to worry about his team? This when the Coach Jones called another player a “traitor” for attempting to help a rape victim? Paul is a special kind of human scum to take offense to Jim Harbaugh instead of calling for Butch Jones’ firing.

Paul needs to stop LYING! He needs to be upfront about what the real issue and it’s not family time; who works harder; or one coach calling out another but it’s the exclusivity to talent primarily in the south. Paul doesn’t care about the student-athlete, the opportunity for exposure, or even satellite camps themselves. He cares about the Alabama’s, Tennessee’s, and Ole Miss’ of this world and their ability to have a competitive advantage without having to compete for all recruits. Who suffers? Not Jim Harbaugh (he will be attending another concert soon) but high school students particularly those who could have gained more exposure and received top notch coaching in their region.

This repeated hammering is sounding more like a cheap ploy on Finebaum's part to goad Coach Harbaugh in to coming on his show.  Obviously, invoking the name of "Harbaugh" has been good business for Finebaum and if he can pull a Cowherd and actually get Coach Harbaugh to appear on his show and either defend himself or double-down on his attacks, then it's a big win for Finebaum.

What Finebaum doesn't get is that Coach Harbaugh couldn't care less what Finebaum and his ilk thinks!  There's a "forest for the trees" element going on here too that Finebaum & Co. don't realize because this fight is being waged on many different fronts to repeal the satellite ban... as has been reported on these very fine pages, and it's very possible the momentum is with the good guys to pull a reversal or at least a favorable modification 4/28.

Can we ban Finebaum from this forum? Aside from a few SEC blogs, we are the only ones commenting on him.

If there is no ban, can we all agree to just limit his exposure to MGoBlog threads instead of spreading his clicks on ESPN.com?

Bill in Birmingham

Guys, please listen to me on this. I haven't played football since high school in the 1970's. Most of you know more football than I do. But I have lived in Birmingham, Alabama, Finebaum's original home base since 1983. He and I are close to the same age. I know more about Finebaum than most of you do. When I came to Birmingham, I found him to be a talented, intentionally bombastic, but less of an Alabama slappy, sports columnist for one of Birmingham's two papers, He eventually went to radio. The longer he was on radio, the less he was about legitimate sports and more about growing his (largely redneck) audience. I quit listening to him at least a decade ago, His show for many years has been a combination of Jerry Springer and SEC fandom coming to you from the trailer park. Is he smarter than his audience? Yes. But he is all about getting rich with his schtick. There is no point in wating your time giving one shit about anything he says. If Jim Harbaugh were to, God forbid, replace Nick Saban (not happening, I'm making a point), he would suddenly become the fourth greatest person in history behind Jesus, Bear Bryant and Saban.

Finebaum is as useful as Sharp. Stop wasting your limited time on this earth giving a fiddler's fuck what he says.

End rant.

Harbaugh is the best thing that ever happened to him.  What the hell else is he going to talk about in April?

He won't talk about the shady goings on at Ole Miss and Tennessee and any other SEC school.  So that pretty much leaves Harbaugh.  The last thing he wants is for Harbaugh to go away.

Funny, during the season finnebaum was praising what harbaugh did to improve Michigan and that they are going to be a force soon. Now he can't open his mouth without trashing them.

Someone get a bad ratings report that morning?

I've never heard the guy but I've read a bit of his stuff. This seems so off character that he was either:

A) Hung over from a mean bender the night before, and nursing some butt hurt, or

B) Just trying to jack up his ratings.

this tickles me pink.

When they whine and complain, but we haven't done anything wrong or illegal, its just music to me. For too long Michigan was often below their notice.

This always cracks me up.

"Someone....that doesn't always cause division like he did at San Francisco."

Sorry Paul. I can't think of any Michigan fans who are divided over Harbaugh. The University is digging him.

He's being aggressive, but not breaking any rules. Tough. Its like Jim Harbaugh just introduced the spread to the off season and the SEC coaches used to doing things their way don't like it.

I've checked in on his show on the SEC network a couple times this week. Every time he's in the middle of a rant it's about Harbaugh. Every single time!! So then I listen for 3 minutes to some hillbilly blabbering about whatever he's talking about and then turn it. They are obsessed at this point. Oh and the one thing I get out of the callers is 1. They don't care about satellite camps and no one in the south needs then. 2. Harbaugh isn't a family man

Let Finebaum hate on JMFH.  Let his skin crawl with every new news story JMFH generates.  Let his mouth fill with bile, let his stomach churn, let his face blister with the burning hatred of a thousand suns.  I hope his hate for JMFH sends him to therapy and emergency rooms.

Because he is going to be dealing with JMFH for YEARS and YEARS and YEARS.  JMFH is going to be rolling over ess-ee-see schools with 5-TE sets, with multiple #1-draft pick QBs on the roster, with a DL line that goes 3 deep with NFL players across the board.  Everytime JMFH smashes another ess-ee-see school in the playoffs, ol' Finebaum is going to fill up again with all that loathing and hatred... and have to STEW in it DAY AFTER DAY AFTER DAY.

i.e., logical fallacies in which an argument is rebutted by attacking the character, motive, or other attribute of the opponent.

Not only is this SEC slappie's attack inconsistent with his prior statements about JH.  It is also ridiculously misleading.  Harbaugh just coached his 1st UM team to a 41-7 beat down of an SEC div champ.  He also has the 4th best win pct in modern NFL history.  In the wake of the 49ers burial last year, people in SF are literally sick that JH left.  They blame the 49ers management for that.

But most importantly, the SEC slappie's ridiculously distorted attack is an admission that they really have no acceptable argument for the satellite ban.

And every time they open their foolish mouths, they prolong a public argument that they've already lost.

Head Coaching Records

Kiffin:

NFL 5-15

NCAA 35-21

Harbaugh

NFL 44-19

NCAA 68-30 (including turning about bad San Diego and Stanford teams - gee took him a whole year in each case - lol)

How these two can be compared is beyond stupid and ridiculous - what an idiot

puts him together with Madden, Allen and Lombardi as one of the 4 best in modern NFL history.  So, you really can't mention him in the same breath as Kiffin.  A slightly less ridiculous comparison would be Kiffin vs. the SEC's best coach: Saban.  They both had  losing records in the NFL.

to the OP but this is like posting tweet or rant from Mark Valenti.  They guy is simply trying to get clicks or listeners by playing off the immense chache of our brand.  Don't feed the trolls.

Finebaum is all about clicks. So what ever he says I just laugh....but what made me really laugh was when he compared Jim to Lane Kiffen. Like really Paul? Lane Kiffen has been a failure everywhere he went.

Also I love how he claims how Michigan's botched punt is the biggest special teams blunder in the history of football...does he not remember the Iron Bowl from a few years back? What a twat.

My position on what Harbaugh is doing hasn't changed. As long as he is winning I don't care. I do think that if he struggles people will start to turn on him. What is the best case for his record against Staee and OSU after year 2? I think 1-3 is the best case which is..not great, Bob.

I don't often get this heated on the internet, but FUCK YOU Paul Finebaum and all your bullshit about family life and Hugh Freeze dragging out his love for his kids as a reason he doesn't want someone else to host a camp nearby.  Mind you, this is the same jackass whose team gets busted every couple of months for some illegal recruiting issue.

I mean, even SEC people think Finebaum's an idiot so I'm not surprised, but why this Dana-Carvey-as-a-turtle looking MFer is allowed to keep talking is beyond me.

I can't believe he's pretending all of those coaches weren't throwing jabs, subliminal and intentional. Harbaugh is not having it! Never change, coach.

It's also comical of that tackhead to speak on maturity and offer special teams advice. Did Paul suit up for Tennessee? Did he spend decades risking his body and brain playing the game? What is Paul's excuse for his trash radio program? If he knew as much about football as Harbaugh, maybe Paul wouldn't have to spew this bullshit.

Oh, thank God. I was worried that Paul Finebaum did not think that UofM was a "major university." Glad we received that endorsement from a guy who covers the academic stalwarts of the SEC.
