Mark Dantonio Violates New NCAA Rule Prohibiting Sub-Tweeting of Recruits
Michigan State just received a commitment from IMG TE Jack Camper. Following that commitment, Dantonio sent out the following tweet:
Congrats on Ascending from the Sunshine State to the Spartans. Will set up Camp permanently in EL next Jan. 2017. #V4MSU!
— Mark Dantonio (@DantonioMark) March 22, 2016
As noted by Baumgardner, this is likely a violation of the new NCAA rule against subtweeting recruits. I personally think that State should be given the death penalty for this egregious violation of a very serious, not stupid at all rule.

this is an NCAA violation the rule should be changed.

That is what's funny about it -- they just approved the rule over Spring Break. It wasn't on the books until a couple of weeks ago.
Shouldn't they be at home with their families or partying or something?
This is the behavior of an irredeemable monster.

Congrats....Welcome to the Wolverine State.

With the seemingly random collection of capitalized words, I'm wording if Harbaugh sent it out -- or if Harbaugh's English is just English now.
And the camp reference is pretty funny. Their constant Michigan focus is borderline creepy.

I'm not creeped out. The reality, as pointed out in the ESPN article yesterday, is that Michigan has had more attention than any other college program, bar none. The Spring break practices got more coverage in a pretty slow news cycle than any single other thing. Making a reference to that is fair game. After all, Harbaugh makes plenty of references to other programs and people, from OSU to Tennessee to the whole SEC.

I feel like you have to have some pretty thin skin to see a Michigan dig in there

"Set up camp" obviously refers to Michigan. Not that it hurts anyone's feelings but just another example of D'Antoni's obsession
March 22nd, 2016 at 11:14 AM ^
"Set up camp" obviously refers to the recruits last name- Camper. It was a bad pun.
March 22nd, 2016 at 11:15 AM ^
Come on, you really believe that it had nothing to do with Michigan camping at IMG?

You give Dantonio too much credit

I know who he is. He's a guy who will take every and any opportunity to take a shot at Michigan, as he's done throughout his entire career. He's had something to say about everything Harbaugh has done and this is no different.
March 22nd, 2016 at 11:37 AM ^
it is both. I have to say that this is actually a pretty clever tweet. I mean, his team is going to get their face kicked in for the foreseeable future, but he will always have this tweet.
March 22nd, 2016 at 11:22 PM ^
I don't get why some people love psychoanalyzing Dantonio's every word. I also think it's just a dumb pun about his name.
Even if it's about Michigan, how exactly is it a dig? Does no one remember Dantonio saying Michigan camping at IMG was a good idea? It was just a couple weeks ago and it was possibly the only positive thing he has ever said about Michigan.
We don't need to play the disrespekt card too.
March 22nd, 2016 at 11:26 AM ^
I feel like you're the one obsessed here. The kid's name Camper, he capitalized Camp, and you still think this has something to do with Michigan's satellite camp's? How is that even an insult?

I think it's funny when people use "clearly" and "obvious" to persuade people who disagree with that premise.

I just gave him a real upvote

Camp. Florida. Our spring camp was in Florida. This recuit from Florida - where we held our spring camp - is going to MSU.
I get it. Fucking clever.

He also capitalized "Ascending" so we can't assume anything about his intentions to capitalize or not
March 22nd, 2016 at 11:40 AM ^
It wasn't Dantonio that tweeted that, it was the kid. So it would have to be the kid taking some veiled shot at UM. Considering his name is Camper, which is more likely?

I'll continue to make fun of MSU for various reasons.
If that's ok with you, of course.
It's a target rich environment.
That would be a very Acurate statement.
/doing my staee obvious use of capitalization format.

are obsessed with Michigan. Wanting your in-state rival to lose = being an in-state rival. That is how we think of Michigan State. Worrying less about losing a game to Middle Tennessee State and more about how losing a game to Middle Tennessee State effects another fan-bases perception of you = obsession. That is Michigan State.
March 22nd, 2016 at 11:54 AM ^
Well I'm not the one who started the thread about him, but calling the guy an asshole and saying that he'll take every opportunity to rip on Michigan is just stating a fact based on his past actions.

I mean, it's not a big deal. I really didn't think it would turn into a big debate. But I think he's definitely referencing Michigan's IMG practices, even if he's also referring to the recruit's name. It's like when he said that they weren't having any "flair" for their signing day. Obviously taking a dig at Harbaugh and him bringing in Ric Flair. He's good at these kind of subtle digs, but it just shows his petty nature.
March 22nd, 2016 at 12:44 PM ^
is a dig at Michigan. It is not mean spirited or ill-intentioned, it in fact appears kind of playful. But IMO you are correct that the last name "Camp" was used as a double entendre of sorts and that it was obviously referencing Michigan's camp.
I'm with Stringer. The tweet was like a 40 degree day. Debate over.

His last name is Camper... Camp refers to that. Wouldn't put it past Dantonio to make it about Michigan a little but this seems like it is just a pun using his last name. Hence the violation.
March 22nd, 2016 at 11:08 AM ^
Do you not see the dig?
March 22nd, 2016 at 11:53 AM ^
I think you'd have to be pretty stupid NOT to see the dig in there. Ultimately, that's the kind of behavior that makes rivlaries special. I think it was quite clever. Now I don't feel guilty for referring to them as "MMSU."
