Yes! This is what many of us have been thinking and saying... my favorite part is from the end:
"But here’s the thing. No one objects when a school drops a recruit because he’s not a good citizen in his community or if he fails to perform in the classroom, so why is it thus completely unacceptable to drop a prospect if he doesn’t meet expectations on the football field too?"

what I have been saying this whole time about Swenson...you keep earning scholarships, that's why academic based ones have GPA thresholds. Unfortunately, the kid let himself down, nothing that is promised today is promised for tomorrow.

I wish I could upvote you a 100 times. Exactly this.
I also want to add that that there are a lot of people here that need to step up and eat their crow. I'm not one of those people who feel JH can do no wrong, but some people here were so quick to throw him under the bus that they really need to step back and ask themselves why when they have no prior proof of any wrong doings. A lot of teens have a warped sense of view to what the truth/reality is when their emotions are tangled up into a situation.

Had he come to UM with what this writer is stating, he would not have played and Harbaugh would have one scholarhsip taken for 4 years that he could not use on another player.

It's nice to finally see a recruiting guy put out an article giving more inside knowledge on the situation. I realize that a lot don't want to get too much into a recruit's business, but it shouldn't be such a problem when that recruit is blowing off to media outlets with only his version of the story. It was sort of known in the recruiting world what happened, but mainstream media now running with a story simply because of the coach's name makes mainstream people formulate opinions with only some of the facts in mind.

Would be nice if the Freep & DetNews published this too as a rebuttal to their bullshit Greenstein piece. But no chance, since only the Greenstein piece will generate clicks.

He was less inflammatory but still sides with Swenson and says that we're just getting with the times. I hate this because somehow the PED-infested team up in East Lansing will be looked at as trying to play the game the right way. I don't mind us being the bad guys, but only if we earn the label (by blowing teams out 38-0).

That's a very well-written article by Spath. Highly recommended reading.

It's got to be the same pluralization as any other noun ending in -enis, right? So we should ask this guy:
http://www.rollingstone.com/culture/features/double-dick-dude-two-penis…
January 22nd, 2016 at 11:10 AM ^
It's a name, so it probably won't be Enii. I'm thinking Enises, which is mighty unfortunate.
January 22nd, 2016 at 11:15 AM ^
I think?
January 22nd, 2016 at 11:15 AM ^
I think?
January 22nd, 2016 at 11:21 AM ^
Enises. Names that end in s, x, or z, and also sh or ch, will have an -es plural form.
January 22nd, 2016 at 11:29 AM ^
OK, so just so I make sure I have this right, the following sentence written by a hypothetical woman would be correct:
"Kiante and his whole family came running straight at me. It was pretty scary having 12 Enises flying at my face all at the same time." Correct?
January 22nd, 2016 at 11:37 AM ^
Then it Eniseseseseseseseseseseses
January 22nd, 2016 at 11:48 AM ^
Yep. No exception for names that have fun/unfortunate sounds.

He said Journalism 101 teaches you to tell both sides of any story. If that is true, the course must now be an elective, because the media are rife with stories telling only one side of a dispute.
That aside, excellent article, thanks for posting it.

plural would be "Enes."
III Declension is a funny one. It can be difficult to find the stem. In general when a III Declension noun is plural, a short "is" suffix is chopped off and replaced with a long "es" (long and short referring to vowels).
Thus:
axis (singlular), axes (plural);
basis (singular), bases (plural);
ellipsis (singular), ellipses (singular);
crisis (singular), crises (plural);
Enis (singular), Enes (plural).
January 22nd, 2016 at 12:46 PM ^
A plural is never formed using an apostrophe. Enis' is definitely incorrect. I think it would be Enises?

I still don't understand the fuss with all the information coming out now. I know people who had academic scholarships to Michigan and other top academic universities revoked because their senior year grades dropped. One girl in 1991 had a full ride offer going into her senior year, but she partied and her grades dropped like a rock. By the spring of her senior year, the scholarship was gone.
If you want to get pissed, look at Calipari booting guys already on campus when he started at Kentucky. Look at Saban and other coaches that boot upperclassmen to make room for 35 incoming freshmen.
But this? This is just people fearing that we're back to prominence faster than they'd like and their little programs can't keep up.

All I'm saying is, has anyone ever seen Teddy Greenstein and that Teddy Blanks twitter guy in the same room??
January 22nd, 2016 at 12:29 PM ^
I am always suspicious of grown men who still go by their childhood nicknames: Teddy, Johnny, Jeffey, Bobby, etc.

Many changes in the last two weeks. Bottom line, we will land higher profile kids or kids that the staff really want for various reasons.

Lorenz flipped his balls to Texas this morning.
January 22nd, 2016 at 12:46 PM ^
Whose balls, Lorenz' or Elliott's?
January 22nd, 2016 at 11:02 AM ^
This is the first thing I've read from a major media outlet that actually shows both sides of the argument.
Very well done. Good find.

FWIW, this article was just picked up by Dr. Saturday as well at yahoo. Link

Even though we will never know everything, imagine that in hindsight coaches might have some regret about the timing of things here but not much else. Always easy to second guess. Never thought there was enough info to judge this but like others, getting to the point I am ready to move on while wishing the young man the best.

I'm still not particularly comfortable with dropping Swenson, but this makes me feel a little better about it.
Onward.
January 22nd, 2016 at 12:03 PM ^
I'm with you. I think that Harbaugh could have handled it better and there is the pattern of ghosting on commits that is discouraging.
However, this make it seem like it wasn't totally out of the blue.
January 22nd, 2016 at 11:05 AM ^
Lorenz just put a Texas ballz prediction in for Elliott. I know teens change their minds and all but my God this kid.
January 22nd, 2016 at 11:10 AM ^
Not over by any stretch....
January 22nd, 2016 at 11:33 AM ^
...lol.
January 22nd, 2016 at 12:35 PM ^
And as long as all of Gary's ballz are blue, I'm good.
January 22nd, 2016 at 1:26 PM ^
Wondering if the staff has known for a little bit given the extra attention to the Boss kid from Cali.
Strange all of the momentum that Texas seems to be building the last two weeks with the instate kids who looked determined to leave the state. Unfortunately, we seemed to be in on three of them.

Columnists don't retract. Look at Drew Sharp. I fully expect him to talk more about the Cain Colter situation as the reason for his original article.
January 22nd, 2016 at 12:52 PM ^
as an example of columnists is like using Rutgers as an example of Big Ten basketball. To be fair to rutgers, there is some small chance they'll improve one day.
January 22nd, 2016 at 11:09 AM ^
what a favor Harbaugh/UM did for him in pulling his scholarship. Because of the scrutiny over his situation he now has the opportunity to go to NW, ND or somewhere else that has/will offer him, and prove he really is/was a good player. Good luck to the kid!
January 22nd, 2016 at 11:40 AM ^
If he did get complacent and slack off, refuse to work out for the coaches at a camp, maybe he learns an important life lesson about trying hard and running through the finish line. That will be worth a lot more than a chance to play at NW. 18 is too young to turn lazy already.

"Some critics will say absolutely. And some will say that Harbaugh extended a written offer to Swenson in September (which the young man tweeted out as proof) so you have to honor that. There’s certainly a case to be made that if the coaching staff was uncertain about Swenson they never should have issued that offer."
Harbaugh and company shouldn't have extended a written offer if they were still evaluating him. Had that not happened, I think I would have been much more comfortable with this situation.
I'm still not a huge fan of the practice in general, at least the extent to which it is used (the number of commits they accept that they ultimately tell to look around), but I think Michigan can at least protect themselves better going forward by changing up some of their approach.
January 22nd, 2016 at 11:20 AM ^
Also why wouldn't they have just pulled his offer after he refused to camp? Or why did coaches meet with him in December and he was tweeting his excitement about enrolling in early Jan? Still doesn't add up.
Also bumping his official back a week...and then canceling...makes it APPEAR they were holding onto him while they worked a different prospect (Spanellis?) they liked better.
January 22nd, 2016 at 11:30 AM ^
Coaches probably visited him in December because Swenson couldn't be bothered to make the trip to see his future head coach on multiple occassions (when he was still committed). Probably a show of face/honourable thing to do. Tough call though, you're right.

Oh true.
Given the magnitude of that game, probably couldn't evaluate him as a football player that weekend.
