Michigan NFL Draft Streak in Jeopardy?

Submitted by EastCoast Esq. on

Last year, Michigan football players were chosen in the NFL Draft for the 77th straight time. Only the USC Trojans can match that streak. Here's an article on it.

This year, none of our boys are expected to be drafted.

Is this something to be sad about? Or just an interesting factoid? I can't decide. But just thought I'd share.

I wouldn't put much stock into those overall rankings.

Teams have their own rankings and picks guys that they work out.

If a guy has a good workout, the team can fall in love with him and draft him.

People keep talking about Ross keeping the streak alive... but what about John Harbaugh? Pretty sure if we have any remotely draftable player (obviously Houma, Glasgow, maybe Rudock, Ojemudia...) Jim is going to be in John's ear about it

I'm totally cool with this.  The significance of those two guys returning will be huge for the program in 2016 and definitely outweighs some obsure record that no one knows or cares about.

Matt Cassel was drafted after throwing only 33 passes in his 4 year career as USC's backup due to his excellent performance at the USC pro day. Rudock definitely has a shot with strong showings at the Citrus Bowl, pro day, and team workouts.

Given the current trajectory of the program, I don't particularly care if this streak comes to an end this year, especially since Jake Butt and Jourdan Lewis would almost definitely have been drafted if they decided to come out early.

Having said that, I think Rudock has a chance at being drafted if he does well in the bowl game and has a good showing at the Combine.

I assume the question was "what is the best university which will have 77 straight years of having a NFL draft pick" Answer: "That would be the Michigan Wolverines Alex. I'll take Leaders and Best for $1,000."

Nah, someone will go late. When you are looking for 6th and 7th round guys, someone who played well enough for Jim Harbaugh would probably get some scouts' attention.

Today marks the one-year Harbaverssary of the day we found out the Angry Michigan Football Hating God was finally moving on so we could rebuild once again. Despite a less than perfect season this year, I think we'll all happily take 9 wins in a NYD Bowl Game. Other than Harbaugh's return to AA (http://mgoblog.com/content/harbaugh-michigan), what's your favorite Harbaugh moment over the past year?

It's hard to believe that it has been a year already. Especially since the first 9 months went excruciatingly slow as we waited for the season, living off bits of info. The moments when his hire went from long shot to reality are ones I won't soon forget.
Perkis-Size Me7 hours ago
I don't know if I have a favorite singular moment, but watching Harbaugh go apeshit on the sidelines to defend his team, along with bringing some dignity back to this program was pretty great.

Beating the teams we're supposed to beat was pretty great. Don't know why, but putting Rutgers in particular in its place this year was just so awesome.

Contrast to the "win dirty" threads about basketball and back to previous threads asking if anyone wanted to win at any cost, how amazing is it not to just hear these words (so many coaches can talk the talk), but know that Harbaugh BELIEVES these words? He truly believes in honest competition, battling with the best to be the best, competing with honor in everything he does. Makes me proud to say I'm a fan!

HARBAUGH!!!
For me, it was realizing I could love Harbaugh as UM's coach with a clean conscience. Before the hire, I was believing some of the spin that he was an asshole who won at any costs and who just pissed everyone off. Not sure I wanted that for my alma mater. After seeing him in action, though, I love the way he is unapologetically himself, which I find inspiring. I actually kind of like him now. HARBAUGH!!!

Indeed, yes. Happy anniversary to the program and the fanbase!

It really was a moment of happiness for me as it was for everyon else here, but I will say that from a mod standpoint, it was the first time since - oh, maybe the 2013 PSU game - that the Defcon level on the blog had finally been above, say, three. Also, it meant no more CC threads since the ultimate CC had been achieved, so I was happy about that too.

The introductory press conference
With both Rich Rod and Brady Hoke (especially) I know I did and I bet others to an extent did as well, I had to convince myself that the man at the podium could do for Michigan what we all wanted him to do. I had to convince myself that I could deal with some growing pains before Michigan became what WVU was offensively. I had to convince myself that a mediocre coach could win at Michigan just because he loved the school, didn't need a map, could sing "The Victors" and so on and so forth.

When Hackett introduced Harbaugh, it was nice to be able to just sit back and smile.

I love his emotion on the sidelines; I'd have LOVED to have played for him. And I thought he handed the MSU debacle very well. But my favorite coaching moment is whatever he said and whenever he said it to Rudock that caused that kid's head to pop out of his ass and start looking like a legitimate QB who could win games. The Rudock turnaround may have been even more impressive than 5-7 to 9-3.

"Did anybody see that? A lesser athlete would have gone down." First thing that came to mind, absolutely hilarious.
For all the grief that he gets for being aloof, you compare this with the Cowherd interview and it goes to show just how much he knows how to handle people. Sometimes it is to entertain (i.e. recruiting), sometimes to motivate and sometimes to get under people's skin. Glad he's ours!!!

Definitely this comment, "...a lesser athlete would have gone down." As the opening comment on his first presser, it reached back to Bo telling everyone that part of Bo was back, showed the enthusiasm and joy at being home, that it was time to have fun, to enjoy UM football as it was enjoyed for so many years yet again.

I can't believe a whole year has gone by - it was gone so quickly. Can't wait for each new moment and event, from the bowl game to national letter signing day to spring practice to another season of hope and great expectations!

It was also nice not being embarrassed anymore by how our HC sounded when he spoke.

Closing the practices was sheer genius. Can you imagine what kind of media circus his first few weeks of practices would have been?

And the best part of it was that he had enough of a grip on the media that nobody complained. Imagine the heat that Hoke or RR would have taken if they had dared to close their practices. Not a peep about JH.

He does it his way and it doesn't matter what you think.

My favorite Harbaugh moment was his reaction to the anger over satellite camps. SEC coaches were upset that Harbaugh was coming into their territory and said that he wouldn't like it so much if they came to Detroit.
His response was to invite them to Detroit.

Unfortunately, the invitation was for naught, as the SEC informed their coaches that, based on a wholly objective, non-politically motivated reading of their rules (/heavy sarcasm), the coaches could not attend the clinic.

That moment made one thing crystal clear, though: Harbaugh is not afraid of competition. If you think you will scare him into stopping, you have another thing coming.

Harbaugh is using bowl practice to explore if under-utilized players might help the team in other positions. Among the experiments...
B. Cole from WR to S

Gentry from QB to TE

R. Jones from DL to ILB

http://www.mlive.com/wolverines/index.ssf/2015/12/michigan_freshman_bri…
It will be interesting to see how this angle on player development pans out.

uminks3 min ago
I hope
Jones to ILB works out well. I don't see Gentry beating out Peters but I think Gentry will make a great backup QB. But if he excels at TE he could see more playing time.

LSAClassOf20009 min ago
Don't Mind At All...
I like that Harbaugh experiments with personnel really, because part of maximizing potential - which he is incredibly good at when it comes to players - is looking at their skills and their strengths and seeing opportunities for them at other places on the field. It is a great failing of many staffs elsewhere to get stuck on using someone at the position for which they were recruited without breaking their skillset down further.

CGordini9 min ago
On a slightly related note, what is our depth chart regarding kickers/punters?

Kenny Allen, Blake O'Neill, what else we got?

Unfortunately there is no room for him though. Seems like Brown is DC/LB.

Hopefully
Winovich (back) to LB and TWJ to Dline.

Moving Cole to Safety permanently really helps ease concerns about the 2017 secondary.

Gentleman Squirrels3 min ago
Wasn't Cole recruited by State as a secondary player mostly and he came to Michigan because we offered him as a primarily offensive player? I hate giving them any credit, but their defensive talent identification is pretty good.
On a different note, what does our wide receiver depth look like beyond Chesson and Darboh? It seems like we're stockpiling receivers in this class, which doesn't bode well for the other receivers on the roster already.

Qmaticjust now
After next season we will have Perry, Ways, and Harris as upperclassmen; that's if Cole and/or Canteen doesn't switch back

Okay....to DL....got it
Gentleman Squirrels2 min ago
He can be both TE and DE. Some said he was a better DE prospect coming out of high school. If rumors of him being all the way to 290(!) are true, then DL doesn't seem too far fetched.

If Gentry plays, doesn't that burn a redshirt?
Magnus15 min ago
He's not going to play. It's just being tested out to see whether it sticks. That's one nice thing about getting bowl practices. You can do some experimentation to figure out what can happen in the spring or next season.
