Potential QB transfers for 2016

Submitted by Magnus on

Montana State QB Dakota Prukop was discussed in a thread yesterday, but with Kyle Allen's announcement that he's transferring from Texas A&M, I thought I would take a little more in-depth of a look at five potential QB transfers for 2016. Allen's interest in Michigan is uncertain, but there has been buzz about mutual interest from the other four.

I'd be surprised if Morris is the only current QB on the roster who leaves—it would be pretty clear that Harbaugh doesn't think much of the Hoke-recruited guys.

Agreed.  If Speight or Malzone end up way down the list, they might decide to leave for greener pastures.  Gentry could be switched to TE if he is at the bottom of the depth chart, but maybe he only wants to be a QB and bolts.

Morris will be an interesting case if he's #2.  If he transfers now, he still has to sit out the year, but could learn the offense of his new team and get acclimated to his new teammates.

If he stays, he would get another year under Harbaugh and might end up with significant playing time if the starter gets injured.  He would then get to play immediately as a grad transfer the following year.

The QB and LB competitions will be really interesting during spring practice.

Hmm. The one move that doesn't seem logical for Morris is to transfer without a degree to another FBS school. You only have five years to play four, so he'd only get to play in 2017 (after sitting out 2016). There would've been no point to sitting out this season; he would've been better off transferring beforehand.

If he's close to graduating, then transferring within FBS is ideal—two years to play two. Otherwise, it seems like the move would be to either drop down a level or stick it out at M.

Although Ruddock worked out for us and I would love to pick one of these guys up as security, I do kind of hope this will be the last year we pick up a QB transfer. Me thinks this will start to negatively affect recruiting at some point.

The only way it negatively impacts recruiting is if the potential player is intimidated about competition which..... Harbaugh? Yes, Harbaugh. If a player doesn't want to compete then this is the wrong program for him. Have you been paying attention? I'm not trying to be snarky, but it's a common theme with Harbaugh, likely the common theme.

Taysom Hill is no ones second choice. The guy is a stud. And there is no way Mangum passed him on the Depth Chart. He has the chance to transfer a 5th year guy, to a better school, to play for either the coach he first commited to (Harbaugh) or his college coach, Bronco.

Rudock was set aside by Iowa. He was by far the best QB on Michigan's team and led M to a 9-3 season.

If Harbaugh wants a 5th year QB then it is a sign that the 5th year QB will be the best QB on M's roster. Do you not want the best possible option at the most important position on the field?

I wouldn't read too much into O'Korn's drop in production his sophomore season. Houston lost its OC to TCU and O'Korn was forced to adjust to a new offense that wasn't a good fit for his skillset. Also, are Hill's injury issues just due to bad luck, or is he genuinely more injury-prone than your average P5 QB?

we need to stop getting 5th year players at qb. we have some that need to be on the field. keep getting 5th year no one will come to michigan. they come so jim can make them better qb's.

Some on the board are acting like we have been taking grad transfers for years now and it is becoming an epidemic. We have done it exactly once and got a pretty decent starter out of the deal. Now we MAY do it a second year. Obviously the upperclassmen aren't good enough and the underclassmen still need time. I think we need to relax a little. If this is still happening 3-4 years from now, then we can revisit the "problem".

I agree with the order you listed. If we have some transfers, then Kyle Allen would fill a nice gap between O'Korn and the other Harbaugh QBs. Towles and Hill are both pretty good. Either would be a great addition to depth. Teams go down to their 3rd string qb every season, so it's important we have solid depth there.

This whole thing about what grad transfew QB should Michigan pick up for 2016 is old already.

So what grad transfer QB's may be looking to transfer in '17?

Sorry but I really believe in Brandon Peters.  The kid can make all the throws and seems smart.  I also think O'Korn is good and I'm really interested to see what Gentry can do.  I think we are good at QB actually and JH and staff will bring in good recruits for the years ahead.

I think Speight and Morris will not be with the team and will transfer so they can play.

Honestly, I won't be at all surprised if Peters steps in and starts day one.  Not surprised at all.  Kid is good and JH will only work more magic in there.  My guess is he will redshirt but I do think he will push hard to play. He is excited to be coming to Michigan and I think he will push very hard to play.   I have a very strong feeling this team will be far more balanced next year.

I really don't think we need any QB transfers.  If anything .. send some good LB transfers our way.  That is what we need.
