Chaos reigned. Michigan survived.

Indiana did as Indiana does, combining terrible defense with terrifying offense to push the Wolverines to the brink. Jordan Howard ran over, around, and through a shorthanded Michigan defense, gaining 238 yards on 35 carries. With the game in the balance and the ball at the two, however, Kevin Wilson called for a quick pass to Mitchell Paige; Delano Hill swatted the ball away to seal the win.

With Ryan Glasgow's absence disturbingly noticable, the offense and defense switched roles. Michigan couldn't rely on their front seven to slow Howard, while Indiana QB Nate Sudfeld played an efficient, turnover-free game; that was enough to produce 527 yards on 5.7 yards per play.

For the first time this season, however, Michigan could rely on their deep passing game. Jake Rudock and Jehu Chesson were brilliant. Rudock set a school record with six passing touchdowns—the previous record was four—and surpassed the career high he set last week with 440 yards on 46 attempts. He also led the way on the ground with 64 yards on seven carries, picking up timely first downs by breaking free of the pocket. Chesson tied the program record by hauling in four of Rudock's touchdowns, including a leaping grab in traffic to knot the score with two seconds left in regulation, and he set personal bests with ten catches for 207 yards.

It appared Michigan might coast to a comfortable, if not particularly convincing, victory as the Hoosiers traded field goals for Wolverine touchdowns in the first half. Rudock hit Chesson over the top for a 34-yard score on a free play to open the scoring; Michigan would hold leads of 14-6 and 21-9 after Chesson's subsequent first-half TDs before Howard finally broke through for a seven-yard touchdown in the final minute of the half. Even then, Michigan responded, marching 71 yards to the Indiana four before settling for a Kenny Allen field goal as time expired.

Perhaps there was some comfort in a 24-16 lead, but any such feelings were gone almost as soon as the second half began; after knocking Michigan back 15 yards, Indiana closed to within a point on a 51-yard punt return touchdown by Paige, who strung his return out to the right before knifing through a tackle and finding the sideline. After Scott Sypniewski's snap hit the turf, causing a Kenny Allen field goal attempt to fall well short, IU closed the quarter with a Griffin Oakes field goal and an interception of Rudock on one of his few wayward throws.

The tables fully turned in the fourth quarter, when Michigan could muster only a field goal after a 15-play drive and the Hoosiers hit back with a 24-yard Howard TD and subsequent two-point conversion. With 2:52 left, Michigan had to drive 66 yards to avoid an upset that would all but eliminate them from division title contention.

Rudock didn't shy away from the moment, moving the offense down the field in a hurry with two completions to Jake Butt and a 41-yard bomb that Chesson came back for and caught at the two. After some harrowing moments as the Wolverines moved backwards, Chesson high-pointed Rudock's toss to bring Michigan within a point, and Blake O'Neill handled another sketchy snap just well enough for Allen to slip the tying extra point inside the left upright.

Howard continued his dominance in the first overtime, gaining 18 of Indiana's 25 yards and punching in the go-ahead touchdown. It took Michigan all of three plays to not only tie the game, but take the lead; first Rudock hit Butt on a post on the second play of M's first overtime possession, then found Amara Darboh uncovered on the first snap of the second overtime for an easy touchdown.

Three Howard runs quickly set IU up with a third-and-goal from the five, and it seemed certain they would bash ahead once or twice more and extend the game. Instead, Hill stopped Sudfeld short on a zone read keeper, and after Indiana showed pass prior to the next snap, Harbaugh called timeout to set up the final play. Paige motioned across the formation and Sudfeld hit him in rhythm, but Hill's blanket coverage won out.

Michigan survived the chaos and remains alive in the Big Ten race; they can control their own destiny if they beat Penn State and Ohio State takes cares of Michigan State next weekend. After an up-and-down first half of the year, the offense is hitting its stride, albeit with help from the generous Rutgers and Indiana defenses they've faced the last two weeks.

Glasgow's injury looms large, however. Jim Harbaugh announced after the game that the pectoral injury suffered last week will keep Michigan's D-line linchpin out for the season. Michigan faces a pair of top-notch running backs the next to close the regular season in Saquon Barkley and Ezekiel Elliott, to say nothing of the other weapons on Ohio State's offense. The line, the unquestioned strength of the team until this week, now has to stiffen up if the Wolverines want a shot at that ever-elusive Big Ten title.

I think the manner in which Michigan was giving up yards on the ground by being pounded, coupled with an insane number of stupid and undisciplined penalities was the most frustrating thing.

The Dline got manhandled, the LBs looked lost last night and towards the end on a few shots on the goalline they simply looked like the proverbial deer in headlights.  I did not see a lot of intensity or anger, but a lot of hands on the hips and less than 100% efforts.

To me, that was the most maddening thing of all, just seemed like overall this team had mailed in a win after taking it to Rutgers and did not catch the fact Indiana has played everyone tough in the Big10 w/o coming through at the end.

It was a classic example of not coming ready to play in all facets of the game....Rudock, Chesson, Butt and Smith on offense seeming to be the excemptions.  Peppers showed some fire at times, but overall very uninspiring play coupled with giving another team a boatload of confidence.

Out oline run blocking has not only not gotten better, it seems to have regressed over the last few weeks.....way too many times they were simply getting overpowered as well, and cannot point to injuries as to why thta would be.

Take the W, but I think top to bottom, this was not the best overall preparation and effort this week, from the coaching on down.

This tweet says it all: @Misopogon: The gap between Ryan Glasgow and playing Godin and Strobel at nose is so wide you could almost drive an Indiana upset through it.

On the other hand 4(!) TD catches from Jehu Chesson. 6(!)TD passes from Jake Rudock. Hopefully this means that there will not be a re-appearance of Sad Ghost Rudock this season. Brian's reverse jinx worked!

I live in Northern Indiana and my neighbors were lighting off fireworks after the last IU regulation TD. I was shocked that they were at all confident with 2:30 left. I guess if you are an IU fan this is essentially a win. That was tough to watch, but I'll take the W after the last several years.

That IU touchdown with under 3 minutes left was the best thing that could have happened to the good guys. Gave time to go down the field and tie it up. I thought sure I was going to be in misery watching IU walk off with a last second field goal for a 1 point win in regulation.

This game any talk about us being in the top 4 teams needs to just stop. While we can absolutely win the ne t two games, we won't if the defense plays like it did today.

Getting over the road Hokes that have plagued the team for years now has been tough but we keep winning so that's great. Not sure what the coaches do about the d line but I hope we see a lot more of Wormley and Henry and less of Godin because he was eaten alive playing inside.

Why? Ohio nearly lost to a northern Illinois team earlier this year? Okie state got pushed to the brink by Iowa state? Bama got shredded when they played ole miss? Hope we get the defense tightend up. We haven't played big time defenses but ruddock is making big time throws out there.

by both coaches on offense and our defense just could not contain Howard. But I prefer to dwell on the clutch grab by Chesson on 4th and goal, the stupendous holds by Blake, and Peppers and Hill steeling their spines at the end. Survive and Advance. And just savor the W.

Ironically, the thing that saved us was Indiana scoring so quickly after we went up 27-26.  I actually got hope BACK when IU got that touchdown because they left us with 3 minutes and 2 timeouts to tie the game and send it to overtime.

I'm happy and relieved to have the win but why don't teams EVER turn the ball over against us?  It's maddening!  If they fumble, THEY always fall on it.  If they throw an interception, we always bail them out with a penalty (like the MSU game) and like tonight when Sudfeld threw that really horrible pass that was picked off in the end zone...BUT!!!!  Offsides, Michigan.

Michigan has also GOT to stop racking up so many penalties.  Was it 9 false starts and 5 offsides penalties tonight?

Same.  When they showed the replay and were trying to make sure that Howard had crossed the line of scrimmage I was actually rooting for them to quickly confirm the TD.  It would have been worse if they had the ball inside the one and burned off another minute or two so (before inevitably punching it in).

Earlier in the season I would have felt better about the possiblity of making  goal line stand, than driving the field for a TD, but in this game I felt the total opposite.

If we can combine that with Rudock becoming a good QB, we could rack up some serious yards and points these next 2 weeks.

Still, 8 wins with 2 games and a bowl game to go?  Beats my expectations this season.

Crazy as it is, the Indiana games seem to be the most entertaining since RichRod took over. Very thankful we won tonight but the defense and the run game HAS to step it up (oh yeah the kick coverage team as well). GO BLUE!!!

Was it that IU got that TD in there last drive in regulation? They were looking like they were going to run the clock out and kick a FG for the win.

They get in and it's reviewed and he's still in.

Turns out that's just what we needed and it gave us just enough time to drive the field and tie the game up.

Yep

This was mismanaged by IU. Their defense is crap. Don't put them back on the field. Wind the clock all the way down, kick FG with your money kicker, game over. Then they go away from their unstoppable RB with the game on the line. They've come close, they're gamers and their offense is flat out scary but Kevin Wilson simply doesn't get the job done. It's been 5 years. Wonder if they move on after this season?
