I'm Rooting for Shane

Submitted by fortissimosca on

Since it appears to be a two horse race now and there doesn't seem to be a lot of people in the Team Morris camp, I thought I would throw my support in for a few reasons:

1. Seeing Shane succeed would be the cherry on top of the Bursley Soft Serve Ice Cream on a Waffle Sundae demonstrating the ineptitude of the previous regime.  Concussion gate was the boiling point for the last administration, and I want to see Harbaugh take the centerpiece from that and turn him into a champion.

2. I want to see the hometown metro Detroit kid who "just wants to play" recover from one of the worst moments in U of M history and take us to a National Championship (Big 10 Championship?...bowl game?........beating Rutgers?)

3. I'm concerned about Rudock losing his job at Iowa, whose playbook is about as simple as a corn farmer's tinder account.  Harbaugh's QB turnarounds have been attributed to simplified reads allowing the passer to make quicker/better decisions.  Rudock was superseded in a similar environment while Morris hasn't been in that environment.

I know I am rooting for the underdog.  Neg away if you must.

edit: I apologize for the addition of the cup size to Rudock's name

Shane has not shown that he has the intangibles required to be a good QB. O'Korn is the complete package and will lead Michigan to great heights in 2016 and beyond.

Summer competition may settle many of the starters. I think it is just as important to have backups playing at a high level to be used when needed. I don't have a favorite at QB. I'll let Habaugh decide on the starter or both if he wants to go to a 2 headed QB system.

I'm rooting for Rudock. He's been a very efficient passer in the Big Ten. He won 8 games in 2013 despite having a mediocre coach and supporting cast, and has put up impressive numbers against some good teams like Ohio State, Nebraska and Wisconsin. I'm grateful that he was available and willing to come to Michigan this year, since it gives us hope for something more than a rebuilding year.

Simple offense not at Michigan?  You must have missed all of last August when all the talk was of simplying the offense due to all the youth everywhere outside of Funchess and Gardner and Butt.   Both played in simple offenses.  One showed basic competency.

If Rudock wins, it's kind of expected.  Hard to not start him at Utah given his experience.  Let's hope that the non-conference schedule is full of lopsided blowout wins and both of them get to play a lot.  That way, we'll be ready for the B1G season, because you never know when the guy on the bench is going to need to play.

I'll be happy with the starter because I'll know he's earned it. Whomever walks out of camp as number one probably had to work harder than we even realize. If it's Shane that will mean he's changed and he's ready. I it's Rudock than I'll support him and route him on. It's a good time and things are ok the mend.

I'm not really that concerned. If its Rudock, we know we are getting the 3/4 best QB in the Big Ten (counting the OSU QBs as a single QB in this scenario). If Morris starts (assuming Rudock isn't injured), that means he beat out the 3/4 best QB in the Big Ten.

Its win-win after what we watched last year.

I think if you look at a few assumptions, it's not exactly a mean-spirited sentiment (and we know what happens when you assume!).  The assumptions:

  1. For this analysis, we assume everyone is healthy and buying into Harbaugh's program.
  2. Rudock has already shown that he can be a good to very good QB in the B1G.  With Harbaugh coaching him, we can reasonably expect him to meet or exceed his 2:1 TD to INT ratio.
  3. It's reasonable to expect that Rudock will improve under Harbaugh.
  4. Most of us expect that Rudock will start, and are very happy to have him on the team, esp. given items 1 and 2.  The floor for QB expectations, since Rudock joined the team, has been "competent" and that sounds pretty damned good.
  5. Shane has a rocket of an arm, but has been prone to INTs for various reasons (youth, coaching, OL, new schemes).
  6. Harbaugh puts a very high premium on limiting turnovers, and seems unlikely to entrust the offense to a turnover-prone QB.
  7. So the only way (barring injury) that Harbaugh starts Morris (or any other QB) over Rudock is if the QB in question is really hitting his stride.
  8. Profit.

Looked at in that light, if Shane Morris starts then it means that the QB situation is better than expected.  So I'm not hating on the OP for this (although his title makes it sound like he's pulling against Rudock, which ... ick).

Like most everyone else on this thread, I just want to see the QB position improve, and someone separate themselves from their teammates to excel.  All the roster QBs seem like good guys, so I'm not pulling against any of them.

But if Rudock is healthy and someone else starts, it likely means that we're in good shape at QB.

Logic

1) Rudock was 'ran out' of Iowa because the next generation QB threatened to leave if he didn't get the starting position. I feel like this has been posted on the board for it to be well known. The guys is a solid QB, and not some incompetent imbecile that many want to make him out to be.

2) If Shane wins it, that means he legitimately beat out a solid QB. This by de facto makes him an above-solid QB.

Conclusion: I want Shane to win it because 1) it means he's progressed and is at least an above average QB (99%). 2) he's a hometown kid that has always loved michigan (1%).
