My top 10...many of which I've had multiple times.

1.  Stellas:  Grand Rapids

2.  Frita Batidas:  A2  (technically not a buger, but a frita)

3.  Hunter House:  A2/B'Ham

4.  Broadway Bar:  Grand Rapids

5.  Franks:  Zeeland

6.   Bubbas:  Traverse City

7.  Lauras Little Burger Joint:  Decatur

8.  Millers:  Dearborn

9.  B Spot:  Royal Oak

10.  Rays:  Grand Haven

Hon Mention:  Northside Bar in Manistee, Redamaks in New Buffalo, Choo Choo Grill in GR

Side Note:   Best buger I've ever had was at Holstein's in Vegas...but its not in Michigan.

What am I missing?

I'm with you on this one. Every St. Patty's day, it was tradition to go to our early morning classes, then head to the Torch for a burger and fries and Black and Tans. They were damn good.

I'd also add that the burgers at Farmers Home Tavern in Hemlock are great. They typically get the "Best Burgers in the Saginaw Area" honor every year.

Cozy Inn, Nestoria, MI -- located on US41 just west of Three Lakes. Mmmm .... good!

Oh, and the Drive In in Baraga has the best Pizza Burger. It's made with Cudighi, stuffed with moz and sauce.

I was a big fan of Great Plains Burger Co off of North Campus.  It might not be the best in Michigan (how do you even judge that?) but it was my favorite burger in Ann Arbor for sure. They also have amazing fries and shakes.

in Monroe, but Larson's burgers are very good...

Some others on my list... Redcoat Tavern, Ray's in Reading, MI, and Sidetrack's in Ypsi that I just tried last week for the first time.  Nemo's burgers are outstanding when cooked on the flat top behind the bar.  Love their hot mustard.  Casey's is the best I've had in A2.

Some formerly on my list... The Charlie Brown from the first and original Diamond Jim Brady's on 7 Mile which no longer exists and Spike's in Grayling which just isn't quite as good as it once was.

Miller's is good but overated.  Hunter House is bad and overated, but has excellent hashbrowns.

I spent my formative years in some dive union bars and halls, and I remember a few good burgers,...Gerrell's in Michigan Avenue. the Coolidge, Moose club, Fran and Jerry's, the Brown Derby, but the best was a few blocks from the river when my dad worked on the Columbia Boblo boat in the summers... name escapes me though.

In Benton Harbor has great greasy cheeseburgers. A guilty pleasure indeed, they're very similar to what you find at The Varsity in Atlanta.

I haven't been there in a couple years, thought of it but couldn't remember the name of the place when I posted earlier about Henry's. North Shore is located about midway through Harbor Shores GC, the Jack Nicklaus-designed course just north of Benton Harbor/St Joe. They didn't dare tear the place down when designing the course.

Goog's in Holland has about every burger imaginable and they're all delicious. Bubba's in TC is very good, but I'll have to try some more on your list.

What makes a burger the best?  There is a time for a Hunter House burger and a time for Redcoat burger.  But, they are much, much different.

I think it depends on the mood.  Like beers, burgers come in a variety of categories.

How about a "simple, delicious burger" category and a "gourmet burger" category?

The best burger I've eaten was at Sportsman's in Grand Marais, MI.  Had just finished a 3 day backpacking trek through Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore living off of tuna, hunter's sausage, granola bars, and trail mix.  The fries were the best I've ever had too.

I'm a burger lover. I never pass up an opportunity to try one, I even had a travel job and would try out all the recommended burgers online when I'd swing through towns. The best burger I've ever had is the burger they sell at Snooker's pool hall. The Livonia location has the best kitchen, but the eastpointe one is still just, uhnff. Every time I have it is still the best burger I've ever had. Bacon cheese, side of onion rings. I put a few on top of the patty, and a little mustard. Side note: best fries I've ever had are from Sorrento's in south warren, 9 and van Dyke. Never would expect it, either. The guy there changed up how they make them to his own taste. He frys them in a light tempura batter. They're amazing.

Some people like thick half pound patties, some like a collection of thin patties.  Some people like theirs grilled over an open flame, some like them sauteed on a flat-top.  With the thick half-pounders, one can cook the meat to certain temps, while thin patties will always be well-done. (Please do not confuse this with charred or burnt.)

With respect to the thick half-pound type (my personal preference), only a handful used to be able to claim "best," as they used ground beef purchased from Knight's Market.  Now about two dozen establishments use Knight's products.

So it seems to imply that Knight's steakhouses (original on Dexter Rd. and new downtown location on E. Liberty/Maynard) would have the best.  But, you can go to Knight's Market on Miller/Spring and purchase the meat either in bulk or formed into patties and grill them at home as you like.

To me, the key is quality meat, fresh toppings, and soft buns (unless you like toasted).
