OT - If You Could Switch Professions, What Would it Be?

Submitted by xtramelanin on

Mates,

We enjoyed a great topic earlier this week with the 'Roll Call'.  So next question:  If you could change occupations from what you do now to what you think you would like to do in a near-perfect world (no jobs available in the adult film industry, you rogues), what would that new occupation be?  Extra credit given for humor, the 'why' of the new occupation, and if you are actually taking any steps toward this new job.

Happy weekend and go blue.

sure wish I spent more time kicking the football when I was younger. You get paid well and can play for twenty years....and make the occasional tackle.

A famous painter or sculptor. They work all by themselves and never have to work with other people. No annoying co- workers, make your own hours, and just use your own imagination to create art.

Unfortunately I have the artistic ability of a 3rd grader.

Be an announcer at major events a la Michael Buffer.  Just nothing cooler than rattling off some stats and then getting people hyped up.  Either that, or a professional wrestling announcer so that I could scream "Oh my gawd, King!" every 40 seconds.

More practically, I've been a lawyer and software developer; I guess if the money was right I'd like to be a writer, maybe about tech or sports, but knowing enough freelancers it doesn't seem viable and probably way more stressful than it sounds.

Forest Ranger. Office would be Yellowstone or the Rocky Mountains, abundance of space and fresh air and biggest problems would be a slightly drunk camper or retrieving pickanick baskets from bears that are smarter than average.

Travel all over the country building sports venues, both collegiate and professional. This is actually achievable for me. I am a civil engineer with tons of experience. I'm just trying to convince the Mrs. to become a traveling nurse and go with me. I am seriously heavily considering this career. Or a hops farmer.

Software Engineer for a Silicon Valley Tech startup. (Uber, Snapchat, Twitter, Facebook). I'd only want to be one of the veryyyy early employees though $$$$$$$

It might be interesting, but I'd probably prefer to be a food critic. Supreme court justice if I can be at the very top of my profession.

Work at a college as a janitor even though I feel like I'm smarter than most of the people who go there. Sometimes see an equation written on a blackboard like half an equation and... just figure it out. Be best friends with Ben Affleck.

I would be a detective or forensic scientist. That, or a Scripps Ranch Mom (someone who lives in a kick ass house, drops of the car pool kids, goes to yoga and then starbucks, reads by the pool while the housework is hired out, drinks wine at lunch and bitches about being too busy to get the kids to soccer practice on time).

You just described my biggest nightmare, except for the house. If I had spatial skills, I would go back to school, become an architect and design my own kick ass house. You can keep the yoga, Starbucks, poolside debauchery and the hired help.

It's the field that turns me on. Instead, I went to grad school for computer science and law school. I settled for security and money. I'm staring at age 50 and spend the scant free time I have reading other people's papers in the quantum physics field and pondering how things work and why I settled.

Always wanted to be a pilot. Thought it was out of reach due to me being colorblind, but that's only Air Force not commercial planes.

(Pro tip: don't make career decisions as a high schooler based solely on loose information gleaned from friends and Little Miss Sunshine)

As a Philanthropist, I’d hope to have earned the money from private-sector activities that were productive, beneficial and not harmful to the environment or any people anywhere. Presumably, the money also would allow for financial stability and flexibility in choosing where I’d live, where I’d be able to travel and what events I could attend. The philanthropy part would allow me to further make beneficial contributions to society.

Being a United States Senator would place me in an exclusive, hundred-member “club” that would allow me access to places, challenges and decision-making opportunities that not many people get to experience. Plus, it’s at least a six-year term, so the campaigning for re-election (if I’d decide to serve more than one term) would be less disruptive to my work than what it would be from serving in almost any public-sector position other than as a member of the United States Supreme Court; and the money I’d earned from my private-sector work would allow me to self-finance a large portion of those campaign expenses without having to rely very much on special-interest contributions and Super PACs.

Having a gig as a Podcast Host would give me flexible hours and a chance to experience the pleasure I had during my college radio days, and the connections from my business, philanthropic and government activities would make it reasonably easy to get interesting guests. For my first podcast, I’d try to get a panel discussion with Bob Costas, Bill Moyers and Charlie Rose discussing the art of interviewing, and have Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey perform an acoustic set.

Considering the subject of this thread and the fact that, at my advanced age, I'm probably stuck wth what I've been doing most of my life, The Dream by Thee Oh Sees probably would be the opening song for the Podcast:

I had a dream, a dream I said
A bloody dream in which I said:
"I'm not dead, oh dead"
I lie awake until I sleep, I see the sky tear, and then it weeps.
I was scared.
So scared.

The dream, it seems, is peeking, into real life.
The sun can't burn, the dream, from my eyes.
The dream, seeking, peeking, real life.

I can't believe every answer isn't PGA golfer. You can only work outdoors in warm climates and wealthy areas. You make great money. The hardest part of your day is walking and your job is what men work 40 years to get to do everyday. It's like someone said to a 20 year old "hey wanna be retired now, but still make a million dollars every year until you're 40?"

I definitely would love to be a NFL or college D1 coach. Not the head coach, but just being on the staff would be awesome. I also would love to work in the front office of a professional sports franchise. Who wouldn't want a championship ring?

I'd actually try it if the odds of achieving any kind of meaningful success were better than about 0.002%.
