OT: What have you gotten for free ala Jameis Winston?

Submitted by Go Blue Eyes on

While the debate rages as to what Jameis Winston (and other college athletes) got or didn't get for free, it got me to thinking what I have gotten free on a regular basis that ordinary people just don't.

Perhaps the best thing I ever got for free on a regular basis was free gas for almost a year when I worked in Carlsbad, California in the late 80's.  I knew the guy who worked the payment station, would pull up and wave to him, pumped the gas and then simply drove off.  It was pretty cool not to have to worry about gas prices for a long time.

Just curious to see what others have gotten in their past or present that would qualify as "preferential treatment."

Which/what study of the Kaiser Foundation?

Are you referring to their ACA tracking poll?  This is just about the public's opinions regarding the ACA and it's benefits.

Are you referring to their ACA healthcare costs?  These do not provide enough longevity to determine whether or not a 2-year fluctation is statistical chance or real benefits of improved coverage.

Are you referring to healthcare via employers?  The only longitudinal data demonstrates an increase in out-of-pocket costs by the employee in both larger deductibles and premiums from 2013-14, matching prior years?

Also, if you are going to say the ACA immediately increased your insurance premiums 50% you can't also say that 2 years is not enough time to determine that the ACA has reduced growth in health spending and premium increases.

Out of pocket costs were increasing well before the ACA and for a while. Ironically, the ACA banned the junk insurance plans that were completely built on high out of pocket costs and huge deductibles--so for many people their out of pocket costs are going down. Also note that the ACA caps out of pocket spending for all policies at $6000/year. This si true to employer sponsored insurance and plans purchased on the exchanges.

You are confusing intuitive, anecdotal evidence with actual epidemiologic evidence.

And since Obamacare is making massive changes to an industry that makes up 20% of GDP, intuition and anecdotes are not an effective basis for policy change.

If preventing medical bankruptcy was the point (it is not, since Silver plans have incredibly high deductibles), there are much simpler ways for this to have been accomplished without bullshitting the American public.

I like how you simultaneously say "not everyone needs a Cadillac plan" and that the ACA does not prevent medical bankruptcy because plans are not generous enough.

Also, there is lots of evidence that insurance enhances overall well-being and ensures that people get care they need. It is a really obvious conclusion.

For about a year or so, I was able to get free booze for parties provided it was nothing particularly ostentatious from  a brand standpoint (so, cheap shit) through a connection who worked for a distributor during the summer. This worked until said friend was caught giving some Wild Turkey to another friend of mine and was promptly told his days in the alcohol distribution industry were over.

Used to walk into a Mexican themed nightclub in Lugano Switzerland and before I was done saying hi to everyone a shot of tequila and a corona was waiting for me at the bar

When at college at Alabama prior to the Vietnam war, I would get free 'things' from a woman named Jenny when she was in town to visit her boyfriend who was on the football team. I still think about her from time to time. Damn shame she passed away at a young age from a mysterious disease.

I worked at the Halfass in East Quad. Our manager let us write out IOU's. A double burger with a triple load of tots and a milkshake would usually turn into a grilled cheese for the IOU.

Had an apartment above a bar right out of college. Pretty bartender would let me drink there for hours and only charge me for a couple. Of course after trying to leave an impressive tip, I'd end up spending about the same. So really, she was the one getting the free stuff.

And no, never happened. It wasn't for lack of effort though. Stupid English boyfriends and their cool accents

I had a friend who worked at a pizza place. Any pies that were not perfect (bubbled crust) were set to the side and not sold, and my friend would get to take them home at 8 PM when he got off shift. Usually a day out he would ask us "hey, what kind of pizza do you guys want me to mess up tomorrow?" That went on for a year. I never got tired of pizza.

But when I was getting a free meal or a free bar tab back in college...I didn't consider it stealing, still don't know to be honest.

I mean just the other week my family was in town and we went to a bar I frequent every now and again and the bartender recognized me and after 2.5 hours of drinking, for 4 people, our tab was $16. Were we supposed to take a tally of the 10+ drinks and 10+ shots and say "no, no, no, this is at least a $90 bar tab!"

I'll be back, love Lula's a Pub...look it up if you're ever in Wilmington, NC --- great place. Have to have the signature Wilmington Gasoline Milkshake one time to say you've done it.

Bottoms up, my friend.

No idea why I'm remembering this, but back in high school this girl I know used to get drunk at parties and give me foot massages. They were absolutely fantastic, and I honestly don't think I've had a single foot massage since.

When my girl and I go to China, it is difficult for us to pay for anything. Everywhere we go, there is a driver waiting with a car and instructions that we never see a bill for anything. Hotels, restaurants, admissions to whatever, everything is already taken care of. She had a mid level position in a hospital there before emigrating, her brother is a provincial official, her late father was a high level communist party official at the municipal level. So she knows some important people, but it's also just the way they treat people. We once made a last minute decision to take the high speed train from Shanghai to Beijing, instead of flying to her city. I actually managed to buy the tickets. When the train arrived in Beijing, her phone rang, "there's a driver named Liu waiting for you..."

Circa early 90's.   I was close with a worker at an Ann Arbor ice cream shop.   I later married that worker.  Nothing like a closing time ice cream dish on the house.

I was in a hospital gift store recently, and the lady ahead of me bought me a pack of M&M's for patiently waiting while her mother took a long time getting things together at the cash register.

I worked contract archaeology for a summer in North Dakota about a decade ago. The first weekend we were there, one of my roommates and I went to one of the two local bars in town. Being North Dakota, they had some weird shitty beers we'd never heard of in the cooler, so we started ordering them. Each time we got a round of beers, the bartender gave us free shots because she "made too much for those guys down there who ordered them." For the last shot (after 6 rounds of beers and 5 rounds of free shots), she said we could order a free shot, whatever we liked. So I told the red-headed bartender that I like Red Headed Sluts. While I was genuinely not hitting on her, she must have taken it that way because she giggled and skipped off to make our shots. From that first weekend in May until we left in October, we were at that bar 5 or 6 nights a week and never once were asked to pay for our drinks. We were never even presented a tab. We just tipped the bartender somewhere between $20 and $50 depending on how much we drank. I saved no money that summer.

Side notes, when it was closing time at the bar, they would just pour whatever was left of your drink into a solo cup and send you out into the street. The bar had a blackjack table in the corner that only seemed to be live after midnight. The bars in town sold pint bottles of hard liquor - this bar would sell you a shot of Everclear, but not a bottle; the bar across the street would sell you a bottle of Everclear but not a shot. It was a strange place.

I would wipe the tables off in the winter and put up the chairs at close. The bartender would give me a free fifth of rum. We would also flip the claw machine on it's side and take stuffed animals we couldn't get loose. In the summer cases of beer would somehow flow out of the back kitchen to my dads boat I drove to work. We would take it out for a nice swim and some drinks on Torch lake after close.

Bartended for a year in college. Free bar tabs and no lines at any Ann Arbor bar, free food all over the place. Honestly it was annoying. People are only hooking you up (which usually means they're stealing from their employer), in hopes that you'll steal from yours and hook them up. Especially annoying/awkward if they visit your bar 5x as much as you'd ever visit where they work, you know.

I worked at Cedar Point for eight years. So I never had to pay for admission even when off work. Two of those years I was a VIP tour guide, so I never had to wait in line to ride a ride.

Nothing, really. Tried stealing some fruity life savers from meijers when I was 8, got caught by my mom. Recently I bought firewood from the gas station in a pinch, buy the dude didn't understand me and didn't charge me for it. I paid next time I filled up.

Did an IT project for Anheuser Busch back in the 80s. I was the pro from Dover sent in by the system vendor to make them happy and fix their problems. Spent many days and nights locked in the AB brewery and distributor building right next to Newark airport. They'd bring in beer and snacks to keep us working as late as possible. Once my coworker and I saved their project, an AB delivery truck would occasionally stop at my house and give me a case of beer. Free beer is always a good thing. Got the VIP tour at HQ in St. Louis and some nice meals in the executive dining room where every beer they made was on tap.

Dated a bartender at Scorekeepers, yes the only female hot one. Free drinks for myself at all times, and depending on her mood, usually for my friends as well. was amazing.
