Michigan dark secrets

Submitted by chunkums on

The offseason can be a long and difficult time for football fans, but it is a time that generates some really interesting threads occasionally. In light of this, I pose this question to you all:

What are your deepest and darkest secrets relating to your Michigan fandom? Are you a convert from the other side? Do you have any regrettable stories from watching Michigan games? Do you have any dark secrets now?

I'll start: I love Michigan and cherished my undergraduate years there, but next year I start my PhD at...Ohio State.

I'm a Sparty by education. I wore plenty of maize and blue on campus and as expected, got tons of shit for it. Nothing harsh though. My wife and father are Spartans also and my mother-in-law is a Buckeye. Despite this info, I love them all dammit. My family that is.

3 - I was born in Ohio, moved around the country a bit as a kid, and then when our family moved to Michigan around 8th grade I though "Oh, I'll just root for Michigan first and Ohio State second."  Didn't realize at the time these rooting interests were incompatible.

2 - When I got accepted to Michigan my freshman year (1999) I didn't get student tickets.  Then, my sophmore year, I got tickets and accidently checked a box that gave me 2 student tickets side-by-side instead of just one!  ... BUT... I sold them all.  I only started going to games religiously my Junior, Senior, and Graduate Degree year.

Number 1 by far - If there was one school in all of college football that I wish Michigan would be like on the field of play... it would be Ohio State.  I love the spread offense, the mobile quazrterbacks, the suffocating defense, the overall style of play with a chip on the shoulder.  If Ohio State wasn't our mortal enemy and I wasn't a fan of Michigan, I would be a fan of OSU.  But of course, OSU is the devil.

After the I checked the score of the Minnesota game during the wedding I was in that day I pretty much started rooting against Michigan. I couldn't take any more Hoke.

I was forced to leave both the 1995 Virginia and 2002 Washington games early for family commitments, thereby missing the dramatic ends of both. The worst part is I had my sister's ticket in the 10th row of the student section for the Brabbs FG. Would have been pretty much staring right into the kick...

On the other side of the coin, my parents made me skip the 1994 Colorado game to go to a classmate's birthday party. I think I won out there.

I suppose if I had to choose a moment of regrettable behavior, that for me would be my drinking binge after The Horror. While that in itself might have been understandable after that game, I also went on a drunken rant about the direction of football in the middle of the Brown Jug and then peed in an alley later behind what is now 1300 S. University. Very unbecoming for me to let myself go like that and I still am kind of ashamed at the loss of control.

While Bo was coach, I bet against us in many of his Rose Bowls. Never lost a bet.

One of my closest friends is a Domer.

My girlfriend was so bored at the OSU game in 1977 that she took out a book and started reading. I still married her.

I stopped watching the 2004 game against MSU before Braylonfest happened.

And, most embarrassingly, I actually posted a comment here—before he even played a single snap for Michigan—that Sam McGuffie was going to be in solid Heisman contention by the time he was a junior. That's when I learned my lesson about watching high school highlight videos.

When I was a senior in high school applying to colleges, Michigan was still rolling admission.  The theory was that the earlier you applied the better your chances.  UM was my top choice so on the first day applications were allowed I submitted everything.  A few weeks go by and the online status check was not showing that they were received.  How could this be I thought?  After some calling around to the admissions department it turned out that in the process of transferring papers documents over to the computer system (this was 2006, right around when UM was beginning to go paperless I beleive), they lost many of my documents and that I would have to resend them.  I was crushed and angry at the school because any advantage I had from getting in a complete application early in the rolling period would be gone.

Right when this was happening my high school had a jello wrestling event for seniors.  Each group of four (2 v 2) that wrestled came up with a theme.  Jello wrestling was the friday night before the November 2006 #1 Ohio State v. #2 Michigan game.  As I'm sure many remember, that game was the talk of the sporting world that week and made for a great "theme" for my friends and I with one team wearing UM gear and the other OSU.  However, still being angry with Michigan, I refused to be the Michigan team.  Therefore, I was dressed head to toe in scarlet and gray.  To make matters worse, and this is my dark secret, there now resides a photo from that night in my senior year high school yearbook of a smiling me decked out in OSU gear.

Im Catholic so naturally my dad, mom, aunt, uncle, other aunt, cousin #1, cousin #2, cousin #3, cousin #4, cousin #5, and my youngest sister ALL went to ND / SMC (my sister is only female to cross the line and go to ND).  my greatuncle apparently used to buy Father Hesberg a new caddie every year.  so... i grew up a ND fan (vivid memories of the pain of a 24-0 halftime lead over USC turning into a 55-24 loss... and similar euphoria of the Trojan horse w/ players in the new green jerseys breaking the losing streak), until my snr hr in HS, when i picked UM. and I hadn't even applied to ND.  and typically used to kinda root against them, but since my dad passed a few years ago, my mom gets a high from ND winning so i dont mind them doing ok for her benefit.

and I grew up in chicago area (shocker right), so I am actually a HUGE Illinois basketball fan except when they play UM.  they used to have some great teams in late 70s and early 80s and they were fun to watch.  i was pretty disappointed when UNC beat them for the natty a few years ago -- although not nearly as much as when burke was called for that phantom foul.

My dark secret is that I was accepted to U of M out of high school and chose not to attend due to a few reasons. 1) Family situation was such that it was favorable for me to remain close to home. 2) Money. 3) I come from a small town and having class sizes that were larger than my entire high school scared me to death.

at halftime of the first Under The Lights game. The student section was so overcrowded it was really uncomfortable to watch. My girlfriend at the time kept being bothered by the frat guys crammed near us. Watched the rest of the game at my house with no regrets.

I was born and raised in Ohio, to a family of Buckeye graduates. Turned to the good guys early in life and never looked back...until last year. After the National Championship I thought, for the first time in my life, if things would have been better/simpler/easier if I had just stayed a Bucks fan...

Don't hate - it was a sad moment for all of us

Born in Michigan. Grew up in Ann Arbor my whole life. U of M was my first, second, and third choice of colleges to attend... But in actuality, I didn't have a great college experience. Didn't find it a very warm and accepting environment despite having nothing but fond memories of Ann Arbor in my adolescence. Very cliquy; met a lot of kids who came from very well-off families and backgrounds and seemed to have all the right ingredients on paper but had terrible attitudes. Didn't encounter a lot of people who embodied the term 'Michigan Man'. Made it through undergrad and grad school but kinda wish I had went elsewhere. Will always be proud to be a Wolverine, though, despite it all.

I cant watch games with my parents anymore even though they raised me on Michigan football.  They know shit about nothin when it comes to football, and I cant listen to "why not just throw it long there" anymore.  I cant, I am sorry

I now watch games by myself the majority of the time, or with my wife...who also annoys me because she says Michigan will never be good again.  She keeps bringing up Chad Henne years and how he always audibled out of the plays and thats when she knew Michigan wouldnt be good again...why you ask?  Your guess is as good as mine.

I was a hugh NFL and NBA fan growing up and didn't really like/ care about college sports. When I was at Michigan, I would go to a few games with friends, but mainly I'd casually watch M football on TV and then veg out and watch a full day of NFL games on Sunday.

1) I attended MSU, although I transferred before graduation and graduated elsewhere. I'm ashamed to say I bought season tickets freshman year and, pathetically, wore MSU gear to those games. I honestly was never a fan though, and even proclaimed my love of UM to anyone that would listen.

2) I don't hate Notre Dame at all. It's actually quite the opposite. I find their rich football history fascinating and love their uniforms/helmets. I enjoy seeing them do well, except against UM of course. I'd be a Notre Dame fan if I wasn't a Michigan fan.

3) I had to give away my tickets to Purdue @ Michigan 2003 to take the ACT. I don't regret it, although that Purdue team had a ton of pros on it I would have liked to have seen, including Kyle Orton.

4) I love the movie Rudy.

5) I saw Brian Kelly coach at GVSU when they played N. Michigan in Marquette. I secretly hoped he'd eventually coach at Michigan.

6) I bought a University of Arizona cap while I was living near Tuscon, but it was for purely cosmetic reasons. Separately, I secretly hoped to meet Rich Rod while I was there.

7) I regret wanting Rich Rod fired after his 3rd season, although obviously it worked out well. HARBAUGH!

8) My 1.5 year old son occasionally wears Badgers gear because my wife is from Wisconsin and is a diehard Bucky fan. I do not allow this on Michigan game day though, usually only when the Badgers play on a day the Wolverines aren't.

9) I supported Henson over Brady while their careers overlapped.

10) I like Tom Izzo because he is a fellow yooper and think he is a better coach than John Beilein, but not by much.

I once flipped off the camera during a frozen four game in minnesota...  some people didn't like that...

I thought it was rather witty.  my friend Roger says I am the wittiest person he knows.

I don't care about women's athletics at Michigan...at all. Obviously I'd prefer they do well, but it really doesn't influence my mood one way or the other. I've actively tried to change this but have been unsuccessful so far.

OK, here is another,

I grew up in the Denver area and the team I rooted for was Colorado (even during the Hail Mary that should not be named,  This was the 80s/90s, and the team I rooted for the most (except for CU at the time) was Stanford because their band was so awesome. (I admit, I have been a nerd from a really early age.  Don't make me throw Scifi pictures down on y'all to proove my point. I have accepted my nerdum.

I have a MSU t-shirt that I wear about twice a month. I got cold when taking the bar exam in 2008 at the Breslin Center. All they had, as you might imagine, was MSU gear. The shirt fits great, so I wear it to workout in. But...I've worn it inside out each and every time I've worn it over the last 7 years. I never forget. Go Blue!

(1) I kind of adored Lloyd Carr, Rich Rodriguez *and* Brady Hoke. I wasn't ready for any of them to leave.

(2) At the 2005 OSU game, I sat in the student section near a Buckeye fan shaped scarcely differently than a refrigerator. He was old and alone, loud and rude, roaring all afternoon until his complexion and sclerae approximated the shade of his hoodie. I'm not sure what he was doing there, but at that age, on that day, I cared to inform him that he didn't belong.

So every time he tried to leave the aisle, I tried to out-alpha him and prevent him from getting through. Not with active hostility but a more passive kind: looking him in the eye, standing strong, and behaving immovably. Basically, I sunk to his level. Went full lizard brain. By pretending to be strong was only weak--maximally unthinking. It was a low moment, and I regret it often. Not only do I care to be a great steward of Ann Arbor's and Michigan's sterling reputations, but I also have perfect disinterest in giftwrapping for an outsider a reason to feed his confirmation bias about Michigan. Ignominy to the Nth.

I married into a Buckeye Family.  My wife is the middle of 5 children and all of them (plus both parents) went to OSU.  When we were dating I downplayed my UofM fandom and even went to a game or two in the shoe.

I was born at Ohio State's hospital and rooted for them my entire youth.  Hell, I still root for them when we're not playing them, although have been in several fistfights with my brother (a die-hard OSU fan) during The Game.

I watched almost no basketball this year after LeVert went down.  And I liked Gary Moeller better than Lloyd Carr.

Wait!  I never believed that M would actually get Jim Harbaugh as their coach.  I didn't think we were good enough for him.

Ooh, this is therapeutic.  I thought it was a mistake to fire Rich Rodriguez.  Still think it was.

I was so scared that Brady Hoke wouldn't be fired that I quietly rooted against our boys at the end of the season.  I maintain that this does not make me a false fan.  Anyone who rooted for the team to win, knowing that the possible result of a mediocre (as opposed to disastrous) season might be continued failure, isn't actually supporting either the team or the university.
