Great to be back in the Big House. Great turnout and atmosphere.

That's besides the point. Norfleet is a running back. But he's been on teams that want big, burley RBs. He's an RB that would excel in a spread pass-to-run system. Exactly what Cinci runs. I mean, I love to have him on the team; he's a great leader from what I've heard. But I think he will always be underutilized effectively at UM.

Loves to see it, but my honest assessment is we have a long long way to go in player development. Nit enough team speed. Looks like we played hard though. I have faith Harbaugh will get the team there, but it's a big project. I though we showed more talent last Spring.

Seeing as just in the last 2 weeks you've said the following about Morris:

"The guy is absolutely awful and doesnt even have the potential to be mediocre, much less great."

"I have not seen him make one impressive play ever. He's a David Cone level talent at best and has no business starting for our football team."

"I just feel like he's wasting a scholarship spot that could go to an actial big ten caliber athlete. He is awful at the position he was recruited to play."

"Shane would be lucky to start for a MAC team."

"Many people are still more comfortable with the "idea" of Shane Morris starting despite him being a trainwreck MAC-level QB."

I would've thought your boy Malzone would outplay him. Huh.

Shane Morris is going to be given a long, long rope.  The man has the TOOLS.  He has a great arm, quick release, great feet, and he's big and quite fast.  Did you see how he took off like a shot on that zone read?

His physical talents are way too tantalizing for coaches to just ignore.  Because of his sky-high ceiling, they are going to make every effort possible to develop him as a QB.  If he does not make it, you can be assured that he will have proven beyond a shadow of a doubt to them that he can't make it.

The only part I really agree with is that Morris is a better runner than projected.  I disagree that he has even good feet or a quick release.  And a strong arm ain't the same as a great arm.  What you see is what got him recruited.  What I see is not much different than what we've seen the past two seasons.

Becoming reality: Wyatt S winning the HB job. Overall, you can't tell too much right now but what you can tell (and I'm unhappily happy it was mentioned) is that this first year would be a good year if we hit 8 wins. 9+ would be a great year, anything below 7 a bad year. I really don't think we'll be all that different in year one simply on results. I think we'll struggle to run the ball, I think we won't have the passing firepower to make up for it & our defense will have to keep us in games. Kalis straight up blocked teammates today on multiple occasions. Our HBs are still who they've been as of today. WR just looks horrible, sadly. Remove the drops & they still didn't inspire with their routes, blocking & effort. A healthy 1st team defense will be good. Could be very good.

I agree with you on Shallman. I could see him getting a significant number of carries this fall. While not the fastest, he is probably the hardest running of the bunch. He fell forward and looked powerful. I could definitely see it happening, although I am expecting Green/Smith/ Isaac to step up.

Countess made an incredible play - absolutely blew up blocker (Chesson? Not sure) then made sure hard tackle.  Most aggressive I've ever seen him.

Marshall showed some great flashes - looks like he'll be a contributor.

Worried, but we have the staff to improve. Not sure we won't really miss the talent we lost off last year'a squad. Long way to go until Utah.

Lots of time before first game. D looked pretty good for both teams which seems to confirm thoughts of depth and strength on that side of the ball.

I really like them playing an actual game for the Spring Game.  Not just for the entertainment value of it, which was actually better than I thought it would be, but for the team's developmental value as well.

You can see how things go south in the "fog of war" in front of a crowd in a live-game situation, things that are nice and clean and simple in the bubble of Glick fieldhouse.  That's probably a 21-14 game in a Glick scrimmage.

It's valuable to get the team some live game experience, and see how they react when things break down.

RB and WR are just lacking speed. Going to have to build game plans that utilize Butt to his full potential. Defense will be good enough to keep games close.

Really think Drake Johnson has an opportunity to win the job if he is healthy. He's the only one with size and breakaway speed. None of the backs besides Smith looked that great today and even Smith was just hitting holes, he doesn't have top end speed.

Biggest takeaway is Michigan doesn't have 10 linemen or 6 receivers who are ready to play. Depth is still pretty thin over there. If the line stays healthy and Ruddock or Morris can play, we'll be good. Otherwise, it's going to be a lot of hoping for the ball to bounce our way in low-scoring games.

Well, I just got back from there. A few observations:

 - I like that it at least had game-like qualities. The virtual punting....I get it for a practice, although where I sat there were a lot of jokes made about it. I kept asking if we could complain about virtual special teams on a few spots.

- Morris will probably have some leeway if he does indeed start. There's a lot to work on, but you can see the elements of a good QB in him. Of course, it's a spring practice essentially, so we're not going on a lot of data.

- Someone near me talked about seeing Kaepernick-type things in Malzone. I could see that. He just got here, but he did well when he needed to at least try and hoof it.

- hard to speak intelligently about the offensive line because of the draft format. I have to think there are eventual starters on both sides. Still not very deep here, I think.

- WRs and TEs both doing good things at points out there, particularly Darboh and Butt.

- The defense looked good on both teams, which makes me believe we are pretty deep in general here, not to mention pretty good. Lots of opportunistic playmaking, which was nice to see. Henry, Wilson, Clark...several others stood out. Jabrill Peppers is going to be fun to watch no matter where he is in that defense.

Shane still was too inaccurate.  Enter Rudock.

No RB stood out.  Enter Isaac or Drake Johnson.

Butt looked solid.

Marshall surprised.

Bolden, Peppers, and much of defense looked solid.

Need to recruit 3-4 receivers in this class with one being elite who can play immediately next year.

The team was well prepared.....HUGE IMPROVEMENT!!! Players new where they were going and who should be in the game. Biggest improvement was that the ball was being snapped......always.....with well over 10 seconds, often much more, on the play clock.

Look no further than Adoree Jackson at USC.  Plays both ways, is arguably the best CB in college football, and never gets tired.  Peppers is his equal and should be used the same.  USC can drop Adoree in here and there because of their stacked WR corps.  We don't have that luxury.  Peppers needs to play both ways.

Not that Peppers can't do it, but USC is in a bit of a different situation with their scholarship numbers. Their decision to play Adoree Jackson a bit at WR was a reflection of that. There are lots of players at every school who have the capability to play both ways but don't. Our WRs aren't that bad to where Peppers has to play a position he isn't accustomed to. We are usually going to have only 2-3 receivers on the field at a time anyway. Out of Darboh, Cole, Chesson, Canteen, Norfleet, and Ways, I think that unit is pretty much set. We aren't USC with 5 scholarship WRs (not sure if that's accurate, but they do have a seriously depleted scholarship number).

Based on the lack of speed I am coming around to this.  Sadly Jackson was a UM target.

I just looked it up and he only had 1 rush but 10 catches for 138 yards.  It is difficult to be a true 2 way player - but they are comparing him to Woodson in how he plays all 3 facets of the game.  If Peppers is playing full time as a defensive player he probably could max out at 10-12 plays a game on offense but I think it's time to really consider it based on the lack of speed on offense at the skill positions.

Oline--Michigan won't be Michigan until this is fixed.  Format didn't really allow a good cohesive line, so forming an opinion here might be harsh, but they have a long, long way to go.

QB--I hope Ruddock is really good and wins the job.

WR's--yikes

Defense--pleased overall, too hard to tell if they dominated because the offense struggled, or if they're that good.  Hopefully because they're 'that good'.

Overall lack of team speed really sticks out.

wins the job. He showed a lot more poise today, a good deep ball and some touch. Let him spend the summer developing a rhythm with his WRs/studying film and return to fall practice working behind the starting line. Once again we are watching a team trying to digest a whole new offense, minus an experienced QB and their best WR. The beginning is tough in any sport when you don't take the field with guys who have been eating and drinking the same system for 3, 4 and even 5 years.
