Coach Wilcher on Urban Meyer: "I believe our relationship is stronger now."

Submitted by Scarlatina on

"(Meyer) said he didn't know about (Drayton) leaving, that it was a last minute thing. The most important thing about my 'misleading' part was that I didn't really understand the process of recruiting behind Ohio State. I truly do now.

I understand the ambition Urban Meyer has, I understand the integrity of Urban Meyer and I understand that he's about the welfare of the child and the wholeness of what the athletes need at the university. He instilled in me that no child will be left behind in his program.

We did meet. We did talk. And he is the person I thought he was and the person I believe him to be. I believe our relationship is stronger now."

-Thomas Wilcher (cited)

I figured the board may be interested given how Coach Wilcher had previously blasted Urban Meyer about the Mike Weber/Stan Drayton situation:

"I think Urban Meyer will have to step his game up; we're going to have to talk," Wilcher told Detroit Sports 105.1 in a long interview. "He has come to my school and got the No. 1 athlete two years in a row. You cannot come over here, come up to the north, and walk out of here with your pockets full and not give us respect."

well, he didn't tell you a coach was leaving in less than 24 hours, so the "relationship" was pretty much at rock bottom a few weeks ago.  No place to go but up!

If Coach Wilcher is happy with the explanation then fine. If Urban wants to come in and take a CTech kid I'll be more than happy with us taking another Ohio kid that didn't get the offer. we'll see what happens but this is more than likely just talk after overreacting.

Come on now...aren't we being a little too hard on Uncle Urban.  He has integrity oozing from his pores and always has his players best interests and safety in mind.  Take Armani Reeves for example...nothing but the best interest of the player.  He was so concerned for Armani's welfare that he told him he should quit football AFTER the national championship game.  The conversation went like this...

Urban - "Armani...you've been a tremendous asset to the Buckeye program...I'm concerned about your future if you continue to play football"

Armani - "But coach...I just played in the game vs. Oregon and am fine"

Urban - "I know, I know...it's a tough call...I think it would be in your best interest if you discontinue playing instead of risking any further injuries"

Armani - "But coach...I'm..."

Urban - "Player safety is my #1 concern and I think you should quit football.  It has nothing to do with the scholarship spots I need to open up for my next recruiting class...I'm concerned with your health and welfare going forward.  You've got a long life ahead of you and to take a chance of getting any more debilitating injuries just isn't worth it"

Armani - "Come on coach...really I'm..."

Urban - "I know...it's a sad, sad day for Buckeye nation, but you have served us proud"

Armani - "Coach...I can still..."

Urban - "OK...good talk.  Not sure how we'll ever replace you.  I think you know where the door is.  It's been great having you Armani"

Armani - "Uh...OK"

5 seconds later

Urban - "Luke...Larry...just had another spot open up...go get me another recruit".

Seriously...what a lying piece of crap.  Uh...I had no idea one of my coaches was even looking for another job.

The coaching staff is saying that Reeves' 2nd concussion happened DURING the National Championship game. During the game, after a kickoff (Reeves was on special teams), there is a player that comes to the sideline and eventually just lays down. Fans at the game said it was Reeves and they he laid there until about 5 minutes into halftime, and was the last player to jog back into the locker room.

Wilcher must be an idiot to believe that Meijer didn't know about Drayton leaving until last minute. That's like me smoking a Doobie and telling the cops I really thought it was a damn cigar...

This should surprise no one.  What coach Wilcher is saying IMO is pretty simple: "my career depends a hellofalot more on having a solid relationship with Coach Meyer than it does the feelings of a ex-player."

I'm surprised that people are actually surprised that somebody would capituate to a person in  a position of power who can help them both personally and professionally at the expense of their integrity.

Coaches are basically salesman. You don't have the level of success that Meyer has had without being able to sell yourself to coaches, kids, and parents. Just tell them what they want to hear.

surprising that Meyer has repaired this relationship. You don't get to where Meyer is without learning to navigate a few misunderstandings.  Anyone thinking that something like the Weber situation is going to derail what Meyer has going is foolish.  He is a very formidable college coach and the M - osu rivalry is shaping up to be epic at every level.  The good news is Harbaugh is up to the task.   Unlike the previous few years it should be fun!

1. OSU is still a football factory and does a good job putting guys in the NFL.

2. Wilcher is a coach of kids with those dreams.

3. We can't, won't and shouldn't take all the kids that graduate from CT.

4. Wilcher wants to have a door open for his kids to go to a football factory even if we turn those kids away.

OSU did what they had to do and Wilcher did what he had to do.  Now we need to go out there and beat OSU on the field so we can beat them on the recruiting trail.

"It's lowered a little after the (Mike Weber) incident," Onwenu said. "My position is they should have told him anyway. He had a bond with the coaches, and if I had a bond with a coach and was excited to play for that coach, that is something I should know."

Onwenu, Cass Tech DL/OL says he doesn't have a favorite anymore.  Ohio was his favorite.  He visited AA for Junior Day last week according to Josh Helmholdt of Rivals.

So, this isn't impacting players at Cass Tech???
