11/02/2018 - 12:39pm In 1989 The Oakland Press…

In 1989 The Oakland Press ran a contest where whoever could correctly pick the most top 10 NFL draft picks would win an all expenses paid trip to see the Detroit Lions play the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Tampa. I was only 14 so I entered under my mom's name and simply copied Dr. Z's top 10 predictions form Sports Illustrated. I (He) got the first 8 perfect and only missed 9 and 10 by switching their order. I (my mom) won the contest. She was a little confused at an answering machine message when she got home from work that day as she didn't recall entering any such contest and thought it was a scam. We flew on the team plane, stayed at the team hotel and I got autographs from all my favorite players including Barry Sanders. Barry didn't play that day but Rodney Peete scored on a naked bootleg in the final seconds to win at the Old Sombrero. It was awesome and all thanks to Dr. Z. That man was a true genius.

"Thank goodness." Remember, no religion.

06/01/2018 - 11:40am Leroy Hoard Quote

Leroy had one of my favorite quotes/sayings of all time...

"You need a yard, I'll get you three. You need five yards, I'll get you three.

05/04/2018 - 11:46pm Bonds

pretty amazing Barry Bonds isn't on that list. I had to look it up to confirm.

2935 career hits and 2558 walks (MLB record).

04/26/2018 - 1:47pm Might be the Kiss of Death

But as of this moment WD has had a post up for several hours without receiving a single downvote! Amazing! Maybe the old adage that some people never change is incorrect.

after we park then making our way in. Taking my 11 year old son. Cannot wait!

03/22/2018 - 12:51pm Fawk

I was busy reading the Zavier Simpson article and didn't see this in time.

03/02/2018 - 10:26pm Baubien passes the eye test

I took my daughter to the games today and outside of the weather it was a great day for softball.

Megan Baubien is better than I imagined and I had high hopes already. First of all, she has an awesome physique. Her arms are absolute guns. Amazing look for a frosh player. Second, her control was outstanding. I don't think she missed a pitch by more than 2 inches before the rain started in the 4th. She was perfect until then but lost control when the ball got wet and hit a batter. A couple more near wild pitches and the umpire called for the tarp. In Megan's defense today’s game was scheduled to start at 12:30pm local time then got moved to 9:30 am when Sparty got stuck in a snow storm (typical). The team came out early and went through a full warm up before the game was delayed for rain ultimately pushing the start back to 11:15am. Then due to an hour plus rain delay in the bottom of the 4th the game didn't end until after 2pm. All things considered I am more than willing to look past her bad 6th inning. The outside circumstances were terrible. She was incredible the rest of the day. The next four years of Megan Baubien at the mound will not disappoint.

Faith Canfield was an absolute beast. 2 Hrs today and all 3 RBIs in the second game. Tera Blanco looked great on the mound until a suspect 6th inning. Sarah Schaefer has two shutout innings too. So many great defensive plays but one standout was a diving grab on what might have been a foul tip caught by catcher Katie Alexander. When she took her first step at it I didn't think she had a prayer and I still don't know how she caught it. Aidan Falk, Natalia Rodriguez, and Taylor Bump all made more than one great play in the infield. Lou Allan looks good at the plate but apparently really likes Smashmouth so the jury is still out on her.

Coach Hutch highlight of the day was after the Louisiana coach received a formal warning for arguing an outside pitch strike call from his 3rd base position the umpire walked towards Michigan dugout to explain he had warned the Louisiana coach. Coach Hutchinson immediately yelled back at the umpire "It was a bad pitch!" The look of absolute fear and confusion on the umpire was priceless. He may have peed himself and proceeded to call every ball off the plate a strike for the rest of the game.

All in all this team looked great today and should make a good run. Coach Hutchinson is everything right about Michigan. We are incredibly lucky to have her.

Go Blue!

03/01/2018 - 4:24pm Rain, ugh

I have tickets to the games tomorrow but it is forecast to rain all day. Bummer

02/08/2018 - 1:14pm mound distance changes

ball size changes and the distance of the pitching mound changes. 10U is 35' and 12U is 40'. NCAA is 43' I'm pretty sure. 12U is first age group to go to the 12" ball (circumference) same as NCAA. But all age groups my daughter has been in (going back to 6U) play on 60' base paths.

02/08/2018 - 10:45am will try

I will try and do that. We are going on Friday. We went last year too and had a blast. I was amazed at how big the girls look on those 60 foot basepaths after watching my daughter's 8U team play on the same size field. The game after Michigan's double header that day was UCLA vs Florida so we saw a lot of great softball. I grew up in Oakland County and can't say that softball was a big deal but it is still king/queen along with baseball in SoCal.

02/07/2018 - 1:59pm Garmin Classic

I live in SoCal and my 9 year old daughter who loves softball has already told me I am taking a day off work and dismissing her from school early to see Michigan take on Baylor and the Ragin' Cajuns. She can't wait. I have to admit, after reading this incredible preview (THANK YOU) that I am now pretty excited too.

02/03/2018 - 10:21pm pro?

averaging 195 is not exactly pro bowler. That's not even good for an old man Tuesday morning coffee league

01/27/2018 - 5:07pm buellton

how far are you from the santa ynez valley?

01/01/2018 - 4:42pm same old same old

Don Brown does some things great but teams figured out a pretty simple formula to beating us. PSU started it with getting our safeties in man coverage in the slot with little to no help and exploited it big time. Don Brown absolutely refused to adjust and it had cost us ever since. SC made us pay today with the same play.

12/29/2017 - 1:50pm Raymond James

stadium accepts mobile tickets. I was just there a few weeks ago for the Lions game. we bought our tickets the morning of with Vivid Seats and it was cheap and easy, like using a call girl service based in Tampa with a 313 Detroit area code.

12/20/2017 - 2:06pm Surprising

you didn't get my joke, first reply did. It is a classic line from the book. Oh well

12/20/2017 - 1:42pm Yossarian

What kind of name is Yossarian?

12/08/2017 - 2:48pm I don't do fairy tales

See you in Pasadena.

I read that 20 years ago and can actually remember the feeling it gave me at the time. What a game, what a season.

12/02/2017 - 6:46pm valuable insight

so from what you've seen he would EITHER have to sit out a year or apply for a waiver to play immediately. what other amazing propositions do you proffer? tomorrow it will rain or it will not. Alabama will win the national title or someone else will. I will shit once tomorrow or zero times. slight chance of two or more but unlikely.

12/02/2017 - 6:18pm mgoblog preview

stated Brooks would be 3rd string PG and Poole would redshirt. oops

11/25/2017 - 4:06pm Don Brown Bully of the Weak

Can not make adjustments against good to great offenses. Another 2nd half failure. Once Barrett leaves that game he has to come up with more.

11/22/2017 - 12:37pm ears in hat

there's a certain type of person who tucks their ears into their hat. Apparently Gus is one of them.

11/09/2017 - 6:21pm great idea

I don't see any hurdles in place that could possibly prevent this from happening. In fact, now that you've put it in print it will probably happen for next season. /s

10/14/2017 - 10:15pm not rocket science

if you can't tell the difference between zone and power you should not be able to start a thread on this board.

10/08/2017 - 3:42pm yikes

I think some of you take this message board thing just a little too seriously.

07/20/2017 - 12:45pm only reason

I checked the comments was to see if anyone said birth of a Nation. now we know david Duke reads mgoblog

07/13/2017 - 9:13am start?

Brady started, Henson played the 2nd quarter. then it was mostly meritocracy to finish the game.

05/24/2017 - 9:04pm why I enjoy his failures

Personally I enjoy RR's failures because for years I had to endure pencil pushing nerds who never played a competitive down of football in their life tell what a football genius he was. All he needed was a five years to get his recruits in and Jeff Casteel. How'd that work out. The RichRod sympathizers (Brian and LSAclassoff2000 are the biggest) will never admit they were wrong. What's not to love about some good old fashioned gloating and revelry in another man's failures?

05/03/2017 - 10:57am wow, I'm old

an entire front page post where I did not know a single thing they were talking about. One foot in the grave I guess

04/30/2017 - 10:09pm if you don't know

you're not a true fan, and there's no such thing as a fair weather Lions fan.

04/16/2017 - 12:23pm Marcus Ray

can we also talk about why Marcus Ray was drenched in sweat every time they showed in him in the announcer's booth? was it 100 degrees in there?

04/05/2017 - 11:19pm great course

I loved playing there in my years as a student. However, man could the employees (and wealthy donors/alums) treat the students like dog shit. Some of them were true professionals at being Assholes. I understand money makes the world go round and as an undergrad I did not have much to my name but... if you're going to offer a student rate and take tee times for students then honor them like you do everyone for else. Hopefully it has improved for today's student body but I doubt it.

03/30/2017 - 1:34pm bigger versus biggest

There were only two coaching changes. Get with it!

03/04/2017 - 12:26am Betsa at bat

I took my family to the game and as Betsa went to the plate my daughter pointed out to me she was wearing a batting helmet with #2 on it. Betsa is #3. Apparently she didn't even have a batting helmet on the trip so safe to say this was a little off script. #2 is Aiden Falk who Blanco replaced at first when Betsa came into the game to pitch. Made good contact and was able to beat out what I guess was charged as an infield error. Big smiles for her and her teammates.

02/24/2017 - 10:39am data production

if she is required to produce data I would keep it real simple. An idea (similar to deflategate) would be try hitting balls from a tee that have been heated/chilled to different temperatures and collecting average distances and modeling with a scatterplot (independent is temp, dependent is distance).

If she doesn't need to produce her own data then remember that statistics is science and there is so much stuff that can be traacked with softball/baseball it is incredible. Just make a scattterplot and go.

02/03/2017 - 1:58pm Roids Testing

The PGA Tour begain PED testing the week after the 2008 US Open which just happens to be Tiger's last major victory. You can't make stuff like that up. Incredible coincidence? I think not.

01/13/2017 - 9:30pm Lurking Variables

This is a great post and I am not trying to attack it but... in 2014 our starting QB was Devin Gardner, 2015 Jake Rudock and 2016 Wilton Speight. Anyone who watched those games would know that a very high percentage of those sack rates listed could be explained by QB pocket presence (should come as absolutely no surprise that the sack rate went down tremendously after 2014 because Garner had zero pocket presence). If this data set were from an NFL team with a consistent starting QB and mostly similar O-Linemen then I would say you could attribute a rather high percentage of the variation to coaching. To attribute any of the change in these numbers to coaching is very shaky at best. This is just one example of how one statistic could be heavily biased. With so much turnover in personnel at the collegiate level I would say that the same argument could be made for all the statistics listed. OL data is so player specific that attributing changes to coaches is not very fair in my opinion.

01/11/2017 - 10:46am 2 Questions

1. Do they serve beer at the games?
2. How hot will the cheerleaders be?

12/31/2016 - 6:29pm size advantage?

Ace said the FSU receiver was 5'11". Lewis is 5'10". you think that inch made the difference?

12/27/2016 - 6:35pm Dee-On Saunders

The mispronunciation of Deion's name is pure gold.

and only 12 of those given up by the defense, and you want to hang this on the linebackers? Seems fair

10/29/2016 - 8:44pm padded stats
