Michigan State 76, Michigan 66 (OT)
And lo, the Sparty Bros chanted "Little Sister," for they had survived the onslaught from Muhammad-Ali Abdur-Rahkman, Spike Albrecht, and Max Bielfeldt. The resilient Spartans nearly covered the spread in overtime, and this outstanding effort was well worth reinforcing their massive inferiority complex and questionable-at-best views on gender.
With this signature victory, MSU improved to 1-0 against Michigan in 2014-15, and 3-6 against them over the last five regular seasons.

This loss is 100% on me.
I had another commitment today so I DVR'd the game and planned to watch it starting at about 3:00. But when the TV turned on the channel the game was on was playing so I saw the score and knew we were heading into OT. At that point you cant go back and rewatch regulation (I knew it ended with us in OT) so i decided to watch OT real time and you see what happened.
I'm sorry everybody. I feel terrible.

No, this one is on my dad. He texted "M up by 4????" right before MSU scored and went on a run.

'cept I didn't stay tuned in.
And still...

Don't forget Narduzzi tweeting out "JUST LIKE FOOTBALL"
The inferiority complex runs real deep.
February 1st, 2015 at 3:54 PM ^
Isn't he the coach at, like, another school now? What a classless, pathetic dickbag.
February 1st, 2015 at 4:25 PM ^
They are all made for each other. Just look at that screencap of Izzo. He's like a gnome on fire.
February 1st, 2015 at 4:06 PM ^
While some may be fortunate enough to escape East Lansing, the inferiority complex stays with you forever.

What can you say except to be proud of this team. In four games without LeVert (two without Walton), we've won twice and lost the other two in overtime. This team has incredible heart.
February 1st, 2015 at 3:44 PM ^
The fact that Pat Narduzzi tweeted out a quip because MSU barely survived a JV team beating them at home after learning only hours before their starting PG would be out for the game is proof enough why everyone deeply attached to that school's athletic department is insuferable.
February 1st, 2015 at 4:32 PM ^
Attitude reflects leadership or something? Hollis has shown no shame in being an unprofessional Sparty slappy. His direct reports reflect that same mentality
February 1st, 2015 at 3:44 PM ^
Nearly triumphant. Great effort!
February 1st, 2015 at 3:44 PM ^
Do you even think that staee fans pick up on the misogynistic connotation of the "little sister" chant? Do the women in the stands chant it, as well? I've never been to the Breslin Center, so the reception of that chant is lost on me.

Man, a fully healthy MSU team needed OT to beat a severely undermanned UM team at home. At one point we had Dakich and Lonergan out on the floor together. Beilein really has Izzo's number.
February 1st, 2015 at 3:49 PM ^
As a Sparty I'm glad we came out on top. Beilein is doing an incredible job getting the most of what's left of his roster. MSU was their own worst enemy at times but I think UM's guys just wore down at the end (MAAR is quite a talent and Albrecht really has a knack for hitting big shots). I have a feeling it's going to be much tougher to pull out a win down in AA.
Incidentally, when UM fans constantly bring up the "little brother" angle even today (how many times have I read on this site about how people can't wait to put little brother back in his place), you should expect to get "little sister" back at you when we win a game.

February 1st, 2015 at 3:58 PM ^
I'm not sure how to explain what "tougher to pull out a win" means, I thought it was pretty obvious what I meant. This was a close game that could have gone either way in regulation.

February 1st, 2015 at 4:05 PM ^
UM fans bring it up at least as much as MSU fans do.
For the record, I could care less, it's harmeless fun both ways. I don't really engage in it, but I understand what motivates people to fire something back.

way to completely ignore my point.
February 1st, 2015 at 4:07 PM ^
I'll tell you why. The UM admissions department.
February 1st, 2015 at 4:19 PM ^
I guess the implication is that I couldn't get into Michigan so I'm bitter about it? Lot of assumptions going on there.
If you're interested in the actual story, I never applied to UM because I knew I didn't have the grades to get in - I was way too immature in high school to be serious about my studies. Fortunately I got my shit straightened out and ended up at a job I enjoy (no it doesn't involve fast food or pizza) that helps people and pays me well. I'm comfortable with that.
And all without that pesky inferiority complex. Who knew?
February 1st, 2015 at 4:37 PM ^
I think its because no matter what they do, no one really cares. Michigan is always viewed as generally superior and more important than MSU no matter what they do
My above statement would have Spartans yelling "MICHIGAN ARROGANCE!". But its true. MSU just wants someone to tell them they are just as important as Michigan but no one will. It's built from decades of insecurity.
MSU is a good academic school and have made themselves a pretty good sports school, but they still only care about how they look as compared to Michigan
February 1st, 2015 at 4:47 PM ^
Huh? You just stated exactly what I meant with my comment. lol.
I've never met a person actively choosing MSU over UM. Hence the inferiority complex.
Shiet I've met more people from UM choosing to transfer to MSU who couldn't hack it cuz of the competitive nature of the school in Ann Arbor.
February 1st, 2015 at 4:46 PM ^
And those decades of insecurity have been built from decades of getting rejected by UM. I'm not judging anyone, I'm simply recognizing an obvious fact. Being told you're not good enough at 17 hurts, and many MSU fans have never gotten over it.
February 1st, 2015 at 5:11 PM ^
"I think its because no matter what they do, no one really cares. Michigan is always viewed as generally superior and more important than MSU no matter what they do"
I think people in general (and not just MSU fans) would yell MICHIGAN ARROGANCE! on your statement because that's exactly what that is. It's one thing to be proud of your university and all the great things they've accomplished. UM is no doubt a world-class institution, has done more meaningful research and had higher profile graduates than lots of other places, and generaly speaking has a great reputation academicallly. All true statements and anyone that goes there should be proud of those facts. But it's another thing entirely to look down on others and tell them that whatever they've done doesn't matter because they didn't go to Michigan. It's the epitome of arrogance.
Read my post above about why I never applied to Michigan if you care to. I am comfortable with the high level of success I've acheived in life. Believe it or not, I don't seek your approval.

I had a good chuckle at that Narduzzi tweet. The guy doesn't even coach for MSU anymore, and he's still tweeting about Michigan. I can't even imagine what it's like to live with that kind of insecurity.

So your position is that childish taunts from Pitt's head football coach are an integral part of the Michigan-MSU basketball rivalry. Interesting.

February 1st, 2015 at 3:56 PM ^
I'm so glad I wasn't raised to root for them. Their whole team is insufferable, starting from the little bitch coach on down to that mouth-breathing ass hole Valentine. Nice fans making fun of a very normal looking Albrecht (they were chanting Justin Bieber, which might have worked two years ago, but not anymore now that Spike looks like an accountant,) meanwhile, they have Trice and Bryn on their team, plus thugs Schilling and Costello. F 'em all. I hate State.
February 1st, 2015 at 3:58 PM ^
It seems kind of hypocritical and juvenile to taunt MSU fans for citing recent football history exclusively when referring to the 'dominance' of their football program over UM...and then turn around and use the recent UM basketball record to rationalize today's loss.
MSU won the game. They deserve credit for that.
February 1st, 2015 at 4:09 PM ^
Unlike Michigan State football fans, however, our basketball fans realize that history did not start in 2010.
February 1st, 2015 at 4:11 PM ^
While that may be true, you wouldn't know it from this write up.
That said - great snarky writing! :)
February 1st, 2015 at 3:59 PM ^
I noticed the "Little Sister" chant in overtime, too. How childish.
I enjoyed watching this game. I usually don't watch college basketball games from start to finish, but I did this one and it was well worth the 2 and a quarter hours. These guys are a game bunch. Just ran out of gas in overtime...a few guys are having to play a lot of minutes.
It felt like Michigan State was up by 20 the whole game, and should have been given it was at Breslin and Michigan's team is so depleted. This kind of game shows you a lot about your coaching staff and team mentality.
February 1st, 2015 at 4:10 PM ^
so little sister is childish but little brother is not?
That said, another day to be a proud Wolverine. Proud of the players; thankful for our coaching staff.
February 1st, 2015 at 4:20 PM ^
But I have gotten the impression that the "Little Brother" chant really rankles them, so for them to turn around and come back with "Little Sister" is kind of perplexing to me.
February 1st, 2015 at 5:34 PM ^
February 1st, 2015 at 5:48 PM ^
To actually call us "Little Sister" really seems like just the kind of thing a little brother would do.
"You call me a little brother? Well . . . you're a little sister!"

Also, I am happy with the game. We played hard and kept this within a single 3 point shot at thin end of regulation.
Go blue!
