The dude is probably going to get a nice severance agreement on top of what I assume was a baller benefit package during his time at the U.  He was well-paid and has been employed by some of the biggest names in their respective arenas.  He's going to be home for the holidays and will no doubt find another job in the marketing world without much trouble.

He's gonna be OK.

... writing was on the wall as soon as Brandon got the axe.  He had to have seen this coming.  In general, I don't feel bad for people losing their jobs if they are incompetent at their jobs, especially white collar people.  The longer term improvements to the organization far out weigh the impact to one individual.  In the long term the individual is also better off, because they land somewhere where they can add value vs. destroy it.  Start feeling too much empathy for the person, and you do a disservice to the greater good and to that person.

For people at Hunter's level. I feel confident in saying that while working for Michigan he was well reimbursed and as he was being pushed out the door he was also being well reimbursed (read: serverance).

Hunter does not have the resume to where he needs to have any anxiety about his next move. He will be just fine. If anything hopefully he will be able to enjoy the holidays with family.

It might not be, but I'm just going to assume that this is directly linked to his asinine comments the other day about the brand being bigger than Denard, and all the other players.  Good riddance to this asshat.

Since Schlissel is respected enough to become the president of a major University without ever being a part of it, I am going to say that he gets it or is an incredibly quick learner. He has been thrown into a bad situation, and from all accounts, has done it right and not interfered with this process. Good for him

I've always thought that his name better suited an American folk writer who travels around the country, mixing with the "real" people and writing their stories.

Maybe he should try that.

it does suck to see this happen to a family so close to Christmas, but he has such a strong employment history (Knicks, UofM) that he shouldn't struggle to find a job.  He was paid handsomely by the Atheltic Department ($215,000, I believe), not to mention the outstanding UofM benefit plan.  Something tells me the kids will still have presents to open on the 25th if they celebrate Xmas.  I feel bad to an extent, but with that level of pay, you better deliver the right results, and he just didn't.

...this is why you keep Hackett so the new guy doesn't do this. I've seen this happen firsthand in an AD switch. It's just part of the business.

Luckily, I kept my job through the transition. You know, because I'm awesome. /sarcasm

I'm certain someone can do it more thoroughly than me, but basically he's seen as the primary mover in a lot of the Dave "Brand"on BS that fans have complained about - the noodle, fireworks, creeping advertising etc. Also last week he talked about how Denard isn't Michigan, the Block M is Michigan, because players have just a "fleeting" 4-year relationship witht the school. Denard was obviously a bad example to bring up since he was a bright spot during 7 years in the desert. He said about advertising that it's about shiny Chevys, dance contests and "trying to be smart like that", an instantly mockable and tonedeaf response to the fans he was criticizing for not liking ads.

There's that and the inflatable noodle or whatever the fuck that was around the stadium.

He was a brilliant marketing douche bag hired by another brilliant marketing douche bag.

I bet Lochmann was behind the sky writing stunt.  He also continued the piped-in music which is just lame.

when he came on board.  The throwback jersey for the first UTL game was a cool, one-time thing.  But then they brought out the bumblebee attire for the msu game and started sewing patches on jerseys, fucked with student ticket prices, inflatable food products were placed around the stadium, pissing away several thousands of dollars on a low-brow stunt in EL, shitty piped-in music, coke promotions to get people to come to games, and opening his pie hole to Angelique with a ridiculous statement.

I want to see the patches removed from the jerseys and 98, 48, 11, 87 and 47 should all go back into retirement.  I'd also throw 21 and 2 (unless Peppers wants it) into that group as well.

Especially aggravating when Michigan is so good at marketing itself anyway. It's like he ignored that and changed everything. The right approach would be to let Michigan market itself, and sprinkle in a few marketing bits on top (one good example: the night game experience. Brandon actually did that right I think) Not to go full on bull in a china shop with Skywriting! Noodles! Block Ms everywhere! Brought to you by Chobani! Fireworks! Wow experience you guys! RAWK!!!

Although you feel bad to see someone get the boot a mere eight days before Christmas, I think this is a necessary part of the culture change which seems to be occuring around the department now. Part of reconnecting the athletic department to the university's larger mission, which Schlissel seems to want, is probably getting rid of the Lochmanns of the world down on S. State.

Lochmann's rather tonedeaf remarks the other day about the aversion to sponsors and the block "M" and so forth really didn't help his case to remain, if he indeed was hoping that he might. In any case, I believe he has some experience working in marketing with professional teams, and he's probably better for that sort of environment, so I don't doubt he'll find something.

I suspect he was told weeks, if not months, ago that they were moving in another direction and gave him time to try to figure things out.  A lot of companies do this, so they never fire or layoff people.  They just tell them they have no future at the company and to look for other options.

A certain local flamethrower (Brian's words) tweeted this out earlier today, though he did say it was, in part, because of the comments he made regarding the "Block M"/Denard Robinson. I know there were several football alums who were not happy with what Lochmann had said.

Hackett's doing what he did at Steelcase: cleaning house. He turned that company around and he may be doing the same thing here. He's not behaving like an interim, and that's good.
