From the Freep:

Makes sense since Cardale Jones great comment a few years back,
"Why should we have to go to class if we came here to play FOOTBALL, we ain't come to play SCHOOL, classes are POINTLESS."

About 14 minutes too many.

the Ohio State University, where more time is alotted for food and rest than actual connection with the classroom experience and study hall. I ain't here for no school. Buckeye fever -- catch it. Big Stage, Big Life and Hot hair -- Big Ten.

Or maybe Academics was a cover for tattoo parlor visits.

Really, how long does it take to introduce them to the "honor" students who will be taking their classes for them?
December 12th, 2014 at 4:27 PM ^
Well, theoretically, the campus tour portion of the schedule would probably cover academics, but... Yeesh.
December 12th, 2014 at 4:27 PM ^
Well, i don't know enough to know whether or not this is industry norm. I do find it funny though that they spend 15 minutes on that, and 30 minutes on Strength & Conditioning. Oh, and the 4 hour break between 2 and 6pm. That's got to be a joke.

Fair point... I'm just saying how bad is it compared to other universities? I don't know what Michigan's schedule looks like. One would think you would have a prof give a guest lecture or mock class to the group of visitors. What could possible be covered in 15 minutes? Can't even cover the different schools within the university in 15 minutes.

It's my opinion that when he came there they showed him a pile of cash. Anytime an athlete starts talking about how great such and such schools very average academic program is, that's what I think, right or wrong.

Was your visit as a recruited athlete in a revenue sport?

15 minutes more than Cardale Jones's visit.

but I simply don't know what is expected on these visits at schools that supposidly excel in academics. Seems rediculous. Most those kids won't play professional football, they should get some hands on experience in the classroom.

I've been on visits to schools for football and believe it or not, to me that seems as an indication of how OSU views their academics or their importance on them. The schools I visisted that had strong academics sold it. The schools I visisted that had strong academics talked about it and wanted their student-athletes to take academics seriously. The ones that were only concerned about wins & losses seemed to not care and basically had you tour the buildings and meet the admissions people and past that, nothing.
December 12th, 2014 at 4:33 PM ^
Ohio State spends the rest of that time mapping out how they kick our ass every year in football.... which is really what we care about at the end of the day.

Thanks for the * as OSU grads would not have caught on!

How much time does M alot for academics during official visits, or any other B1G program for that matter?
December 12th, 2014 at 4:36 PM ^
15 minutes is a long time to spend on, "Here is your coloring book, here are your crayons".

Recruits there are shown 1) hot girls 2) good parties and 3) reassured that school isn't hard.
It seems to work pretty well if your goal is to get the best 5 star talent.

Interesting. Found a sample itinerary on the Oklahoma website. Go to page 28. Doesn't show duration, though, so could be 15 minutes or it could be an hour.

To be fair, though, this kid apparently did make several unofficial visits, the only distinction being that osu is paying for the official, so it's entirely possible that he already had the full academic spiel.
On the other hand...

Urban Meyer doesn't need to talk about academics - he has signs.
December 12th, 2014 at 4:46 PM ^
Yeah because a communication major is just worlds more advanced than a general studies major.
Although to be fair maybe our athletic department could use a few more communications majors to mop up the mess Brandon et al. made.

And I'm pretty sure "Family Resource Management" is just a fancy term for Home Ec.

I'm pretty sure most of the civilized world would rather hire our two (2) engineers than all eight (8) of theirs. Just a hunch.
December 12th, 2014 at 4:56 PM ^
I'm not sure what those numbers mean. That OSU football players declare or graduate with major fields of studies as opposed to UM football players that reportedly use "General Studies" as their major? If so, I'm not sure where to begin...
