To our credit, unless we are competing with Ohio State and perhaps Penn State, we are going to win any coaching hire battle with another Big Ten school.
We may have fucked it up recently, but the program still has good bones.

Don't agree that we'll win in a coaching hire with other Big Ten schools. Look at us: the way we treated RR. The way we have an interim AD with no experience who's now looking to be a more long term AD. The president's seemingly indifference to athletics. Michigan has a deserved image problem that makes other schools much more attractive. What coach wants the additional headaches of the problems he'd face here?

I don't see a current HC around that they would want/have a chance with. I think their short list will be Frost and Herman.

Kind of surprised by this move.

Everything looks good from here. But 9-16 vs the Top 15 and 3-11 vs the Top 15 (which is where Nebraska sees themselves as a program) is not good. Better than us, but shouldn't aim for mediocrity.

Last program to fire your ineffective coach before we do, turn out the lights.

Nobody--NOBODY--thinks Brady will be Michigan's coach next year (not even Hoke). While it might be good for us emotionally to fire him right away, if Hackett delays, there's a reason for it. Patience, grasshooper.

Cut out the cancer now, and begin the day anew.
November 30th, 2014 at 12:16 PM ^
They generally don't just go in and cut it out. It may be the right call, but there may be a better right call. If you cure the cancer but it pops back in 3-5 years because you didn't treat it in the correct order did you cure it to begin with?
Hoke has earned the right to be fired and should be fired and will be fired. If our next coach is already picked and doesn't need the distraction because he wants to finish what he started. The pressure is on Michigan now and it costs us nothing. Let the next coach finish what he is doing before the onset of press conferance angst. I am sure there is not a coach out there that we would want that is not still coaching.

People like Hackett that have climbed to the top of the corporate food chain almost always take a Vito Corleone approach to things like this ("Never let anyone outside the family know what you're thinking.") That's why I was surprised at how Martin handled his search (cross ref: Miles, Schiano). This will be done very deliberately. If Hackett is not as ego-driven as DB, I think we'll be happy.

That wasn't a transition fuckup. That was deliberate.
At the very latest, Brandon had settled on Hoke as soon as he'd established that Harbaugh wasn't available, and that was long before the firing/hiring.
November 30th, 2014 at 12:28 PM ^
And as Aratman notes, it's quite possible that our new coach is finishing up some business right now. Pulling the trigger too early leads to losing out on Les Miles in 2007 (it shows you how bad RR's relationship with West Virginia was that he was willing to jump before their bowl game; that is exceedingly rare). Maybe Hackett will nail it, maybe he won't, but if he plays it quiet and cool, it's just the usual for guys like him.

Compared to what Nebraska now owes Pelini. Pelini's contract runs through Feb 2019, and his contract stipulates that if he's fired without cause the university will owe him $150,000 for every full month remaining on his contract.
A first reading of the terms, that works out to $7.5M.

As long as he's fired in the next 3 weeks, what are you losing by not announcing it this moment?
November 30th, 2014 at 11:42 AM ^
Satisfaction. Fans are, by nature, emotional beings.
November 30th, 2014 at 12:07 PM ^
That we are.
But like I've said, unless one of the Harbaugh's is out right now (or unless you know one of them will leave in the middle of the season --- which feels wrong, but fuck it, I'm not in a position to look down for the sake of morality in this matter, I want a Harbaugh as the head football coach of Michigan...not matter how it happens)...there's no rush.
No need to fuel the media fire...no need to make a coach give a Les Miles "have grrrate day" press conference. Just chill. Let's give it some times.
Now if we get to a month from now and Hoke is still the head coach? Freak. The Fuck. OUT!
