Unless he wants to coach Cal or manages to patch things up with San Francisco I don't think they'll have a choice (unless he feels like retiring or finding a new line of work).

The only way this happens is if SF does not make the playoffs. Go Giants!!
November 16th, 2014 at 1:30 PM ^
The Cowboys and Eagles are playing great football, and the Cardinals are somehow rocking that division. Obviously, with Palmer out that position has become a huge X factor, but SF still has to get out of that division with Seattle (still 6-3 despite all the media attention of how they're falling off a cliff) and the Rams, who have a ridiculous front 7 on D.
I'd give SF about a 15% chance of making the playoffs this year.

First of all, as a Bay Area Blue - thanks for cheering on our World Champion Giants!!! You're the best!
Second, the Niners COULD squeak in as a wildcard and be done playing by the day after the San Francisco fight Hunger Bowl (or whatever they're calling it down at Levi's Stadium) - which I hope we play in for personal reasons.
IF the Niners make the playoffs at all they'll almost surely be the lowest seed, playing a potential 10am PST start in the cold/snow. Of course as I type this Kap just suddenly hit Crab for a LONG TD in the Meadowlands in their 2nd consecutive 10am game, so maybe they'd survive that?
Either way, unless Harbaugh gets SF back into the SB (which may keep them playing all the way til NSD) - he's worth waiting for. Even if the '15 class gets decimated, he's proven he can take what you've got and mold them into winners. Check USD, Stanford and SF for teams that hadn't seen any success for years before he arrived.

Cal has had a decent turnaround this year under Sonny Dykes. That job is definitely not going to be open. San Fran is the only job he'd be able to take in the Bay Area if they will have him back if we assume the Raiders are too much of a mess to make for a likely destination. What about
Do we really thing Harbaugh's wife wanting to stay in the Bay Area is the be all end all of him never accepting a job outside of that area? I understand the need to compromise with your spouse for the sake of happiness and a health relationship, but coaching is a nomadic profession and he is the bread winner of the family (presumably). If he really wants to take the Michigan job, I don't see his wife's Bay Area preferance ultimately holding that process up.
November 16th, 2014 at 2:49 PM ^
Nothing against Cal, just figured he could get the job if he picked up the phone.
November 16th, 2014 at 12:36 PM ^
The fact that Harbaugh almost became Cleveland's coach last year suggests his wife's desire to stay in the Bay area doesn't completely rule out the possibility of them leaving.

But the fact that the talks got as far as they did shows that they're at least willing to consider the possibility. Maybe Cleveland wasn't the right fit but someone who has totally ruled out the idea of moving across the country doesn't enter into negotations with an out of town employer.

He makes his living as a coach in the NFL, which is the definition of a nomad! If she married him thinking he was staying in the Bay Area forever she was delusional! Or he committed to an early retirement!

he can afford to fly her out to SFO for lunch every day.

Especially if Ross provides him a private jet for the duration of his UM coaching stint.

Just a guess, but when he replied it was comment #16, but is now something different. I'm not sure folks realize that comment numbers can shift.

He is on verge of playoffs this year, would be crazy to fire his coach to take a chance at Harbaugh.

Rappaport is also out there as mentioning that the vibe he gets from Ross is that Philbin is safe until the Dolphins are backed into a corner, at least for the time being. He said in an NFL.com report that he didn't believe Harbaugh was on Miami's radar even if they were looking.

For example the J Ira and Nicki Harris endowment that's so unpopular around here put ten million in a bank account to help fund the HC's salary indefinitely.

Speaking strictly for myself, I'm not disgusted at the fact that J. Ira and Nicki decided to plonk down millions of bucks to endow the HC position... I'm disgusted that they got their name attached to the position. Isn't having their name in big letters on the stadium structure itself enough of a monument to their egos?

Question: Why is the Harris endowment itself unpopular? I've heard it mocked as Hoke's title, but not that the endowment itself is unpopular?

November 16th, 2014 at 12:44 PM ^
It's even encouraged. What is Hoke's job title again?
November 16th, 2014 at 1:13 PM ^
You know what was absolutely shocking to me? The fact that Hoke makes roughly the same salary as Steve Spurrier!

For instance, Alabama boosters paid off Nick Saban's house. If someone wants to hand you a bunch of money for no good reason at all, there's not much anyone can do about it.
