Do we have to stomp on Hoke's grave?

Submitted by YoungGeezy on

Look, I get it. We're all fed up with this team and the regression. The past three years have been incredibly painful, and the next three years probably won't be amazing either. A very good portion of that is Hoke's fault and his inability to win games. No question.

But, as frustrated as we all are, I feel like we've all lost perspective on who Hoke is. He hasn't been a winner, but he is still the person many of us both embraced and were inspired by in his first press conference. When he talked about how much he loved Michigan, you could see that burning passion and desire. Yes we suck, but he's tried to run a good, clean program, and I do believe he's tried to take his players and mold them into good young men with strong character. I will always want that in my head coach.

Even though he hasn't won here, it's not for a lack of trying. And even though he will undoubtedly be fired for the awful performances of the past three years, I would hope we all can can just go our separate ways without stomping on his grave. He isn't an asshole. He isn't a bad guy (unlike a lot of coaches out there). He just didn't win and that's why next year he's gone.

Edit 1: Sure Hoke isn't gone yet, but come on guys. It's not unreasonable to think that there's a 98% chance he will be fired.

Edit 2: It seems, Ron Utah said it more eloquently than I did: "Good-bye to a Great Man"

He should have never coached here in the first place.

At least he got to live out his dream for a few years and he'll receive some lovely parting gifts.  Not a bad ride to be on for a while.

In the meantime, all of my fantasies are still on the shelf collecting dust.  I'd trade with him in a minute.

It depends on the level of asshole. If his asshole-ness is "I don't really care about a stupid stake and if he's butt hurt he can get over it," that's cool. If his asshole is being okay with his players twisting folks' necks, going after guy's knees or acting like buffoons off the field, then I disagree.

Not sure why you were downvoted for that.  Beilein ending the tournament drought was huge for him and the program.

If RichRod had had comparable success in his second year, he wouldn't have been under the gun in year three.  In retrospect, losing that OT game to MSU in 2009 was a gigantic missed opportunity.  That would have basically clinched a bowl bid, would have put a muzzle on the Sparty hype and could have allowed the team to play pressure-free the rest of the year.  But we lost, and slowly things snowballed.

His Incompetence reflects in the team's performance on the field. Especially when he admits he had no clue the team would do something so stupid as driving a stake in the rival's home turf. Just proves he's oblivious.

Oh, also: Brendan Gibbons, Taylor Lewan, Concussion-Gate...

Enough is enough. Good man? Sure. Capable of coaching Michigan? Hell fucking no.

He was a guy who got hired who was never qualified.  The only reason he got the job was institutional nepotism.  He's like that legacy student that was never qualified if you redacted all the personal information but got in because of someone else's prior achievements.  As for nice guy, who cares? I probably have only a slightly better chance of meeting Hoke at a bar and having a drink with him than my odds of meeting Kate Upton at a bar and having a drink with her.   Is Jim Harbaugh a nice guy?  Saban?  Who you rather have as a head coach, Hoke your Norm-like bar schlub, or one of those guys?

Thing to do would be to schedule a meeting with Preident Schissel and DB, admit that the position is way over his head and resign in a manner that does not disrupt the program.  That is to say if he really loves Michigan as he professes, then he should do the right thing, which would be to put the program into the hands and brains of a coach that can take advantage of the obvious talent that is on this team.

While some of you might think this is crazy and neg bomb me, if this was in Japan the mighty blade would come out and he would commit harakiri.  Now I am not saying that is what he should do.........so please don't react to this statement as anything other than it was meant to be...........if in Japan.

Old Mark D. freaked out about the whole Little Brother thing and took shots at Mike Hart when we flat out OWNED THEM.  Their fanbase loved it.  They went crazy.

I am happy we are not the MSU fanbase, but we have absolutely destroyed Hoke over the stupid stake thing.  So much so, that he had to apologize.

The whole stake thing is stupid, but the venom over it is a bit over the top.

"we have absolutely destroyed Hoke over the stupid stake thing.  So much so, that he had to apologize."

How could any Michigan coach not apologize for such a stupid action, even if the fan base remained silent? This is Michigan fergodssake. (And that's just the actual stake part, setting aside the stupidity of doing it before the game).

I wonder if part of the reason this happened is because Hoke disparaged senior leadership and captains. His attempt to shift part of the blame for last year on Taylor Lewan has led to no leadership. I just hope this isn't the start of a "Wolvie - no!" meme.

Are you a T-ball coach? Should we just give a ribbon because he's a nice guy and tried hard? $4 million a year and your job is to win games. Not be a fun nice guy and get a pass. Sorry that's big time athletics. And he set his bar on his first press conference stating he would be judged on winning big 10 titles, beating Michigan State, and beating Ohio. From his own bar and his own standard he is a failure.

About to write a full thread but we've got enough popping up today. It was going to attempt to be comical and concilliatory but I've had it with people claiming Brady Hoke is a good man and that people who are angry with David Brandon are butthurt and just an angry mob. They are not villians and are probably all around good people but this fact is irrelevant in this instance. They've screwed up too many times and have gotten too many chances. Just because he is "one of us" and Brandon was a CEO of two large Fortune 500 companies people are claiming they should get infinite chances to drive this program even further into the ground. I'm going to say exactly who Brandon and Hoke would be in the Star Wars universe in my opinion.

David Brandon would be Darth Sidious/Chancellor Palpatine/The Emperor. My reasons for this is he is a deeply controversial person who drives wedges between large groups of people and hopes to shape a large organization in his own image. He makes huge mistakes and then tries to walk them back somewhat in order to make bigger mistakes another time. He is egotistical and will stop at nothing to get his way and to make a mockery of everything for which this program once stood.

Brady Hoke is Jar Jar Binks. My reasons for this are he is a nice guy but is also someone way out of his element. In the movies it was Jar Jar who actually called for a vote of no confidence in the previous Chancellor which allowed Palpatine to gain power and he also the one who called to give emergency powers to Chancellor Palpatine. He's a nice Gungan but in now way should he have been a representative of the Galactic Senate. It does not matter how hard he tries he continually screws up and ends up running the Republic into the ground even if that body was decadent and diseased and primed for toppling even without his "help".

This could all end if both men step down from the positions which are clearly too large for them to handle.

Doesn't someone have to be....::I dunno....DEAD before they have a grave? Last F5 I did he was still firmly in charge so we can't stomp on what doesn't exist.

This doesn't qualify as "stomping on Hoke's grave."  My ire is still directed mostly at David Brandon.  No coach can do a decent job with an AD who is 40 years behind the rest of football inserting his ideas into both the offensive and defensive schemes.

David Brandon must go.  Every fan who has suffered deserves a forum in which to vent.  Except, of course, those who wanted to fire Rich Rod and "get back to Michigan football:"  they are getting exactly what they asked for.

None of us are questioning Hoke's character, or we shouldn't be anyway. I have little reason to believe that he's not a good man who has his player's best interests at heart. But he's in over his head, and I think he's starting to realize it, too. His demeanor and coaching abilities directly mirror the image of his team: soft, discombobulated, and not looking like they're even remotely sure of what the hell is going on at any point in time. No sense of urgency at any point in time.

As long as criticism of Hoke remains on his abilities, or rather lack thereof, to coach this team, I refuse to feel sorry for him. He's getting paid to do a job. Extremely well paid at that. If you don't perform for an extended period of time, you deserve to be fired. If Hoke loves Michigan as much as he says he does, he will realize one day that the fate that almost assuredly awaits him at this point was done for the good of the program.

My only worry now is that if DB avoids the axe, there won't be a single credible candidate that will want to come here, and we'll have to endure yet another 3-5 years of wandering in the wilderness.

It's not necessary, but I'm not mad at anyone that does. He makes millions to coach big time football and has been terrible at it. If he can't handle criticism or "stomping on his grade" he shouldn't be in coaching at all.

Like I just mentioned in the stake thread...what bothers me about Brady is:  Where has his passion gone?  Where has his "manhood" gone?  Who emasculated him?

The guy is in his dream-job... making millions, and he just becomes more and more befuddled, more clueless, more passive every day.  Have we seen any fire from the guy since his first press conference?

I think back to that press conference and to the 2011 season in general (going for it on 4th down repeatedly, pushing for the win against ND, OSU performance) and I see an edge, and some bluster.

But for at least the last 2 years he seems much more tentative and increasingly like he is powerless in the face of events.

There's so much about Hoke's demeanor/body language/etc., that reminds me of my father during the initial stages of his early onset dementia, before it ever been diagnosed.  I've thought this for the past few years, but that comment about increased passivity and befuddlement really struck a chord.

Can you stop telling us what to do? These kind of posts only makes people angry. Just atop. You want to be nice to him, write a letter or go to the game and support him. Don't tell us what to do. Hoke is not this great individual. He has made his mistakes that are nothing to do with football. I am not going to list them. I agree that he is passionate about M, but so are we. So, tell Hoke if you can to resign. Don't try to appease some of us who are pissed. We get over it and start thinking about new coach and you come up with a new post. Just stop.

This is the big time and the nature of the sport. That is why he is paid an unbelievable amount of money. You need to win and at the very least conduct yourself like a professional and have a semblance of control. Hoke has done none of the above. He may be a very nice man but he is not a good coach in the slightest. Time to move forward for all involved.

Michigan is now 3-5 and 1-3 in the Big Ten.  Brady Hoke, who is paid millions of dollars to win football games, is now 29-17 overall at UM and 16-11 in the Big Ten.   I can see Michigan losing the next 4 games football this year, including not stopping Tevin Coleman and giving IU's quarterback all day to throw the football.  Ohio State is going to pulverize Michigan in the final season game in Columbus. My prediction is a 4-8 finish at best.

This is far and away the worst coached Michigan football team, and quite possibly worse than the 2008 football team under Rich Rodriguez. Michigan currently has one of the worst offensive teams in the country and is an average football team defensively. All of this in Hoke's 4th year.

Brady Hoke, who is paid millions of dollars in compensation, should be immediately fired for failure of performance.  But this won't happen because Michigan football and the Michigan athletic department is run by a group of individuals who are out of touch, cannot read the market place, are generally hesitant about making bold, decisive moves to correct problems. This is another form of crippling incompetence that prevents improvement.

The irony is that Hoke's delivered results thus far are actually right on par with his past performance at Ball State and San Diego State football teams in overall and conference play.  Nobody should be shocked.  Matters have played out precisely as one could have reasonably predicted (and Brian and many others on this blog di). Past performance really can be a strong indicator of future results.

David Brandon selected a cheap, sub-par, average Joe, with only tangential-, borderline accidental, connections to the Michigan football program as a replacement for Rich Rodriguez, and then spent big bucks on bringing in big-time assistants (Mattison, Borges).

This was a huge gamble, but it failed predictably. Hoke is incompetent, lacks basic football intelligence, and game theory knowledge, and cannot possibly understand the football teams problems right now, let alone deduce how to adequately correct them.

Hoke's press conference statements back in 2011 were over the top and ridiculous then. Now it's just embarrassing, but not quite as embarrassing as those star struck hangers on who lapped up all the "MIchigan Man" horseshit as truth and not myth.

Now we see that Michigan is going to wait until season's end to find a new football coach. Brandon will stay on as AD  because of the president and the regents lack of testicles, and the coaching search will go very, very poorly once again.

Who ever takes over will need more than 3 or 4 years to rebuild the program from the rubble left behind by Carr, Rodriguez, Brandon and Hoke.   Except under the current administration, nobody is going to give a guy 4 years again.  Michigan football is a perfect case study in clusterfuckment, thanks to David Brandon, Brady Hoke, institutional cronyism, and the "not invented here" syndrome.
