Gregg Henson: Sources- Dave Brandon next domino to fall
Saw this in the thread below this one.
http://gregghenson.com/new-information-on-the-new-michigan-coach-and-ad/
This was just posted 20 minutes ago. He details his sources (without naming them), talks about the Regents not being DB's corner anymore and that they will not pursue a new HC without a new AD.
My three separate sources tell me that the next domino to fall is Brandon. He must go before any potential football coach can be approached as he totally botched the Hoke hire, never offering the gig to Miles or either Harbaugh. As a matter of fact, he never even returned calls to Les Miles when he was interested. In his mind Hoke was the only option from day one.
The two names surfacing in the AD hunt are Ward Manuel the AD at Uconn and Brad Bates, the current AD at Boston College.

Don't know what show that is, but is Jeremy Piven ever NOT cast as a d-bag?
September 23rd, 2014 at 9:55 AM ^
The show is Entourage.
It's supposed to be loosely based on the life of Mark Wahlberg. Piven acts as the agent for the main character in the show. He's a huge asshole in the show, but he's "their asshole" if you know what I mean.

Jeremy Piven's character, Ari Gold, got his JD/MBA at Michigan so there's that.

We could have Jack Swarbrick deliver the envelope. Experience matters.

Giving him a pink slip via chicken suit jetpack, followed by fireworks, would still be classier than giving away tickets with the purchase of a Coke.

Either this guy isn't a very good writer, or this story is completely made up. It comes across as very Ace-Williamsish.

I see. Well, who knows then. Hopefully it's true.

I didn't see a disclaimer anywhere, but a lot of times radio personalities will just have transcripts of what they say on air posted onto their sites. It comes off as very informal and poorly-written if you read it as a news article.

Is he credible? Is he another Ace Williams? Maybe I'm ignorant, but if you're going to post rumours of such a magnitude from an unknown name, tell us who this guy is and why we should believe anything coming out of his mouth.

Was he in Detroit any place other than 97.1? I remember him there - he is the brash obnoxiously loud mouth type of guy - sort of like a Mike Valenti type. Doesnt mean he doesnt have connections but he seems like the type to wear out his welcome within a few years. I do remember he was both a producer and a radio jock in his time here.
September 23rd, 2014 at 6:31 AM ^
I can't rememeber exactly which station it was, but I do believe he spent a little time as a sports programming guy at another station. I do remember him being canned from 97.1 sometime in the 2005-2006 timeframe for some reason. I think he might have been pretty close to the guys who put on "Deminski & Doyle" too, when that was around on WXYT, but again, it has been a while since I really thought about Henson's days on Detroit radio.

in a place where I'd either get coverage from his station or hear about him since I was about 2.

So will Hoke, they need to exit together if the team loses 5 or more games. Which is looking quite probable. Brandon hired his buddy Hoke and ignored all the other top candidates. Carr got to decide who was not going to be our coach when RR was hired.

No offense to Lloyd (thank you for 1997) but he should have no say in the matter.

I do hope we continue renovating our athletic facilities. I don't care about cell phone coverage or flyovers or anything like that but some of our facilities are inferior to places like Ohio and Texas. The new track, multipurpose arena, and Canham renovation are needed.

We have more money than almost anyone else, if football is good again, that will only improve. That'll go into improvements, so that's not an issue.
September 23rd, 2014 at 12:12 AM ^
They're not gonna stop. They're coming down the home stretch for the facilities revamp tour.
September 23rd, 2014 at 12:13 AM ^
Ejecting Hoke and keeping Brandon makes no sense ... so that part of this story rings plausible. Beyond that? Who knows.

Can we please just pretend I started the dominos that lead to DB getting canned? I want an epic story when I become Herm Jr.

814 you singlehandedly saved the Michigan Football Program.

complaining about the direction that the Athletic Department has been going in, so if Dave gets fired I'm going to take credit if that's okay with you.
I'm pretty sure they care more than anything else about the opinions of a thirtysomething alumnus in the humanities who's now a professor at a rival school.

Can you post the body in a diary so I can judge if you are indeed the sole reason? And even if not sole reason I'd enjoy the reading if you care to share :)

I was also thinking about posting this awful exchange I had with DB himself (or someone in his office). It was a year ago, when they had that stupid Kraft noodle in Michigan Stadium the day before the first game. I told him that I didn't want advertising in Michigan Stadium (in general, although I didn't like the stupid noodle either). I sent the same e-mail to Brian Townsend. In both I used my University e-mail account and indicated that I was an alumnus and a tenure-track academic (now I'm tenured) -- my school is in the AAU, and in the same class as Michigan.
DB sent me a hostile, condescending e-mail. I was really shocked and upset, to be honest. I figured that I wouldn't get any response, or if I did, it would be something like "Thanks for letting us know how you feel and for your passion for Michigan football! Go Blue!" Instead I get this bullshit snark. Brian Townsend, on the other hand, sent me a really lovely response. He's a genuinely nice guy and/or realizes that he gains nothing by picking fights with alumni.
I was too pissed to think of posting the e-mail exchange when it happened, and then I forgot about it over the offseason, but now DB has pissed me off again.
September 23rd, 2014 at 1:26 AM ^
Would be interested in both now that you say that. I am sure if you received that sort of response, you are not the only one who received similar "feedback" from our AD CEO.

Thirded. I've had a couple exchanges with DB over the last several years, and this doesn't surprise me in the least.
September 23rd, 2014 at 9:42 AM ^
Please do post those exchanges if you're up for it. Brandon knows that that stuff can get out publicly, so I don't think there's any kind of privacy worry there. And this type of thing lets us get a better feel for who's running things, how, and how we feel about it.
September 23rd, 2014 at 12:18 AM ^
I would much rather have Bates. We'd be making the most important football coach hiring decisions and BC seems to be in better position than Uconn in that area.
September 23rd, 2014 at 12:23 AM ^
Yeah but that hair is gonna need some work.
September 23rd, 2014 at 12:59 AM ^
I want the other dude.
September 23rd, 2014 at 1:08 AM ^
After a couple of years as AD he wouldn't have any left.
September 23rd, 2014 at 12:23 AM ^
Diaco's a pretty good guy to go get if you're UConn. Successful (even though he gets his LBs all hopped up on goofballs) DC that took a shitty ND team to the national title game behind their defense. That Manuel couldn't sell Narduzzi on taking over that train wreck shouldn't count against him too much. I like that he tried to go get him though and do his alma mater a favor in the process.
September 23rd, 2014 at 12:42 AM ^
Word on the street is Narduzzi would have agreed to go to UConn but he wanted to increase pay to get the type of assistants he wanted and UConn balked on that. So I dont think its as simple as Narduzzi "not being talked into it". You never know what the truth is but this is what was circulated last winter.
September 23rd, 2014 at 10:06 AM ^
Narduzzi to Michigan!!!
September 23rd, 2014 at 10:17 AM ^
Manuel has a better track record when it comes to college basketball. He handled the sanctions and hired Kevin Ollie when Jim Calhoun left (since then, UConn has won a national championship). Not only that, but he has managed to lock in Ollie (a Calhoun disciple) despite NBA interest long-term.
It sucks to think about, but in a few years Michigan will need to hire Beilein's replacement. Lavall Jordan seems like the logical choice, but the same risks that must have affected UConn with regards to Ollie seem present here. Manuel's experience in the transition could prove valuable.
So while BC may have a marginally better football program, Manuel has the experience of running a true basketball powerhouse.
