Kyle Bosch Takes Indefinite Leave Of Absence
Sophomore guard Kyle Bosch is taking an indefinite leave of absence from the team, per this release from the athletic department:
Below is a statement from Michigan head football coach Brady Hoke:
“Kyle Bosch has taken a leave of absence for an undetermined amount of time for personal reasons. We ask that his privacy be respected at this time. We wish him the best and look forward to his return.”
Bosch started three games as a true freshman last year, but only played one snap in the opener. His most recent tweet didn't indicate any issue with the program—in fact, quite the opposite:
Couldn't be prouder having the people family, and teammates that care about me I love em all couldn't be prouder to be a wolverine

Here's hoping Bosch is able to work through whatever is going on at this time.

Certainly hope that whatever the issue is can be resolved completely, and that he returns soon. Until then, best of luck, young man.
And a question for those of you who are better versed in redshirt rules than I am: If Bosch's leave of absence takes the entire season, can this season be considered his redshirt year? Or doesn't it count because he left the team voluntarily?
September 3rd, 2014 at 6:25 PM ^
call it redshirt or something else is up to you.
September 3rd, 2014 at 6:39 PM ^
The problem is he's played this year.
September 3rd, 2014 at 6:53 PM ^
Good point - the story said that he played one snap in the opener.
But is that one snap enough to burn his redshirt for this year?

Yes - for a regular redshirt, one play will burn it. However, in a situation like this it's certainly possible to get a waiver, especially if he truly only played one snap.

I'm haven't heard the reason for the absence.

The language of the rule covers things like personal hardships and the like. We don't know why Bosch is stepping away, but we can probably assume it would fall under the definition of a hardship that the NCAA would take into consideration.

I hope all works out well for Bosch and that his personal issues (i) remain personal, and (ii) aren't too burdensome.
Looking forward to seeing him back on the field ASAP.

The key words are "look forward to his return."
September 3rd, 2014 at 6:32 PM ^
If only because that means he's managed to overcome whatever issue is in his face right now.
In these situations I have no right to be selfish as a fan.

hopefully this is something the team will be able to support him in

and that Kyle is back with the team soon. He's a great young man from what I've read with a bright future. Whatever it is, let's all hope it's temporary and can be overcome. My wife and I wish him the very best.

I hope that doesn't hurt his amateur status.
Thanks for the comic relief! I laughed.

Bosch would have enjoyed our events on 4th floor Hunt House. It was NWO madness up there. I'm sure nobody would have had he balls to take on Bosch though.

The team sure needs him, but healthy and family first.
September 3rd, 2014 at 8:19 PM ^
I wish him all the best in getting through whatever it is he's going through.
And yes, to answer the question earlier, despite playing a snap...he'd almost certainly get a redshirt if he sat the entire year. The only thing from it being 100%, is the fact that we're dealing with the NCAA.

How do you know it's a health issue? Honest question.
September 4th, 2014 at 9:33 AM ^
Good question. The evidence I have seen indictaes the opposite: that this is a personal crisis rather than a health crisis.
September 4th, 2014 at 10:53 AM ^
any particular issue has been made public, if you have evidence more specific than what has been made public, do the young man a favor, keep those speculations to yourself.
September 3rd, 2014 at 9:12 PM ^
Good luck. I hope it is nothing serious.

not saying this is an issue like will's. however, it seems like it very well could be, and it would be great to have a guy like will be able to talk to him (and any other players going through the same issues)

I don't need to know what the problem is, just that a player on my favorite team is in need of time and space to get things sorted out (whether mental, physical, emotional or educational), that player gets my best wishes and prayers. Good luck to you young man and remember, lesser men have been through whatever it is you're going through and made it out the other side, so stick with it.
Just to be clear, that last statement isn't to belittle what it is he's going through, but to provide hope in what may seem (to him at least) a hopeless situation. NOt that he reads this, but you know what I'm saying.
September 4th, 2014 at 9:00 AM ^
get better.
September 4th, 2014 at 9:03 AM ^
As one of my former bosses in the military would say, FIRST...take care of yourself and your family, THEN do your job. Can't do it in reverse. I sure hope that everything works its way out for the best.
September 4th, 2014 at 10:38 AM ^
Bad enough to be going through any sort of crisis, but having to be in the spotlight with everyone knowing that you have some issue has got to suck. Hope he works through it and that he gets the space he needs.
