🔒OT: Soccer - Women’s World Cup - USA vs Sweden
The US women’s side is facing Sweden this morning. The score is 0-0, which is a pleasant surprise.
Best match of the Cup for the USWNT.

They dominated in extra time. Couple of chances and near-chances. Now it’s PK time!

If they lose this in PKs it's really gonna hurt because the US dominated this match from start to finish. 58% possession, 9-3 corner advantage & an 11-1 shots on goal advantage

Calamitous tournament for them as the world #1. They finally showed up with quality play, just couldn’t score.
Can’t miss the target three times in PK’s and think you can win.

We need to end this shootout nonsense! If score is tied it should be determined by shots on goal during the game! The better team during the game wins. Reward aggressiveness!
There would never be any ties!

3 complete misses, also have to question the coaches penalty lineup...Rapinoe's been off and Ohare gets's subbed in the last minute without one single touch/cpmpletely cold. Not good

I'm not one to defend Vladko much, but you would expect your most experienced veterans to make those simple free throws.

One of the best PKs came from Mewis, who hadn't even touched the ball in a WC match before that kick. O'Hara's looked like Ben Wallace taking a free throw.

There were some very solid, impressive PKs taken. Any PK that hits the side netting, IMO, is well struck. And, an upper corner PK is VERY solid.
I’ll refrain from commenting on those that missed / weren’t on frame.

Rapinoe had never missed the target in her career on PKs. Only had one ever not scored (was saved). She just brainfarted at the absolute worst time.

I hate when coaches do that and think it never works. If you want them to take kicks, bring them in at the end of the 90 or earlier in overtime. Frustrating that Rapinoe missed it/ They also made the mistake the England men did and put their youngest player as shooter #5. She's extremely talented but also inexperienced and missed the shot. That coach stinks, I hope they can him.

I was talking to my wife about penalty kicks. In our minds, this is what you practice the most as a kid. If you are outside, by yourself, dreaming of this moment, you have to have that one shot you favor. You never see a hockey player whiff on these.

So the people who came to pile on do that. What I saw was a shot of her exulting when it appeared we were pulling ahead on PKs a few minutes later, thinking that her miss wasn't going to keep us out. As noted above, she had never missed one.
Everything, everything, everything has to be turned into politics by nowadays. . . Just have the fucking grace not to pile on in a moment like this, what do you say?

Pride comes before the fall. Rapinoe spent the last WC grandstanding on her penalty kicks, which in and of themselves are the least artful piece of soccer, and the highest probability shot on goal. Ironic that her last PC for the WNT was a fail. Feel bed for the younger players, but well-earned for Rapinoe.

Missing is a massive mistake, but you don’t know why someone’s reacting as they did afterward. It’s not like she didn’t care. She said after the game that she laughed because it felt like ‘a sick joke’ and that it was sort of a cruel irony since she never in a million years thought she’s miss since she’d scored literally every penalty she’d taken since 2018

USA women go out in the first round of the World Cup knockout stage, just like the USA men.
When the USWNT said they want to get the same thing the USMNT gets, they should have been more specific.

Well time to move on from the old guard and roll more of the new players in. Gonna be much harder going forward. I gotta say, got a whole lot of ‘what is it exactly you do here’ vibes from Rapinoe, even before that icing on the cake PK miss.

Rapinoe had already said she was retiring after this tournament so not news. I do suspect there will be other people cycling through, as the lack of finishing up front has been an issue all tournament while somewhat surprisingly the defense was about as good as we've seen in a while.

It's sort of crazy after a round where the team seemed unfocused offensively and somewhat lackadaisical overall to actually put together a strong, aggressive game but fail to cash in.
It's a weird women's WC where the US, Germany, and Brazil are all out this early, but probably good for the sport for some new faces to get a time to shine.
Does feel like the US needs to make a change at the top; coaching this whole tournament has been a head-scratcher.

It's healthy! We've helped stimulate the growth of the game world over, and the idea that teams from Africa, Asia, and South America can compete is going to help push the game further. I'm all for it. My hunch is that Japan wins it here, as in 2011. They are a joy to watch. And it's a relief--encouraging, too--that we clearly demonstrated that we'll remain in the think of contention going forward. All said, that's about as positive a loss as one could want.

He’s right though. Carli Lloyd addressed the issues the other night after the embarrassing draw. This team needed leaders not activists and the so called leader of this team was a washed Rapinoe who spends her days playing social Justice warrior and little on leading a group of ladies to another title. You all got mad at Carli the other but this team was not focused on the prize. This is it in womens soccer, it’s not like anyone watches or cares about the womens super league or the womens league here. It’s not like the mens game where the World Cup is a nice distraction every 4 years, yet the leagues and tourneys each year are the most watched in all of sport around the world.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I didn't see activism the other night; I saw complacency and being satisfied with just getting by. That's what Carli Lloyd was calling out. Where does the activism come in? Not being snarky, I just can't find anything on this.

You mean the activists that got them equal pay and stuff, I suspect. Nothing shrinks a winger's little man parts more than an assertive woman. You just knew the weenies would be circling here after the loss. Those same women have won world cups and Olympics, but when they lose after a brilliant showing it's a moral lesson for lefties. Weak, weak, weak.
