TCU Content: Purple Theory Podcast

Submitted by Indonacious on December 6th, 2022 at 8:05 AM

I'm eager for any Michigan-TCU I can get and found this podcast that is actually quite analytical (similar vibe to Mgoblog podcast in many ways) and even handed. The most recent episode is a recap of their TCU--KSU game, but I'm sure they will have preview content soon.

One of the hosts is pretty popular on CFB twitter https://twitter.com/statsowar. I found it to be worth a listen, cheers!

Thought this same thing. He and Jesse need a touch more seasoning in how to handle a team and recruiting issues depending on what level they move on to.

JayBaugh to Western is poetic as I graduated from Western during the Elliot Uzelac (Bo's old oline coach) regime and in came Jack Harbaugh. My roommate was on the the WMU team for three years.

Re: All’s maturity.

I don’t have insider info but my wife is a neurologist. She believes that All was likely properly advised by M docs but possibly sold a conflicting opinion from BioSpine - a for-profit surgery center. she said it’s possible (again, we don’t know specifics) that All underwent a procedure that has a lower probability of success and higher risk of re-injury than what M docs are comfortable with. She said that there is not strong evidence that many lower back surgical procedures produce a superior result for young football players and there is some evidence to suggest a greater risk of re-injury or other complications. Again, we don’t know his specific injury, but among the lower back injuries most common for college football players.

This is a tough position to maintain a lot of maturity. Speaking as a former Big Ten athlete who had injuries, I can tell you this is a lot different than the maturity it takes to keep your head in a tough road game.

Medicine is incredibly complex and docs, especially surgeons, are not often great at communicating the risks and probabilities. Couple that with a possible strong sales pitch coming from a place that sees a business opportunity, but are still board certified docs too, it’s a tough place to know what is right. Erick and his family, might see their future in Erick’s health and that level of emotion makes it really hard to know who is looking out for your best interests and who is not to be trusted. Especially if IF one side is telling you that you haven’t been taken the best care of and they are willing to do what others won’t to fix you. To top it off, it could work, lower probability and higher risk doesn’t guarantee it won’t work. That’s a difficult uncertainty to live with.

obviously without knowing all the stuff going on behind the scenes, its almost impossible to say for sure what's going on and what has gone on....

BUT, since we never will know all the details, this certainly fits the "very likely" narrative.

Who was the young stud RB that was committed to MI, had his second (or maybe third) knee surgery in HS and was told he would still get a scholarship to U of M, but he wouldn't be playing football, for medical and safety reasons... he opted to go to WMU on football scholarship and ended up blowing his knee out again and medically retired from football?

We certainly seem to look out for the health and welfare of these young men, much better than some of them seem to realize.

Edit:  Matt Falcon was the young man.....   he should have taken the dr's falcon advice.

Perfect, I've got 90 more minutes of commuting today, plus I've got a symphony gig on Wednesday and Friday that's about an hour and 40 minute drive, one-way. Podcast time!

They got Sonny Dykes to come run their program, last seen in that irritating game vs. SMU a few years back.

Also, they’re at least the sixth most popular college team in the Dallas Fort-Worth Metroplex.  (Please don’t ask me what a “metroplex” is — I don’t know, and I’ve lived in Texas for a decade).  UT, A&M, and OU are all definitely ahead of them; Baylor probably is, and SMU might be.  But, man, North Texas has got nothing on the Horned Frogs!

I’m expecting literally hundreds of purple-clad fans to descend upon the Valley of the Sun.

What are his comparatives to JJ coming out of high school? I don't get into the recruiting all that heavily and typically don't pay much attention until signed sealed and showing out on the field. I'd take 12 more JJ's. He's just scratching surface of how great he can be IMO. The mobility, Throwing on the run, improv is out of this world. Now he needs to cut out the Purdue INT by taking those risk out of equation. Throw it out of bounds live to play another day.

I do have one question regarding the Erick All situation. Assuming the story of him not wanting to go the physical therapy route is true, was he trying to get back on the field this year or next? It sounds like he wanted to play for Michigan again, but why be in such a rush if he has until next season to be healed?

There’s a story floating out there that All went to a doc in Florida for his surgery and UM didn’t authorize that doctor. He went “out of network” and against their recommendations. And because he did, UM docs won’t clear him to play for UM.

Yes, I'm aware. I'm asking why he went to the place in Florida? He must have felt PT wouldn't work, or he felt whatever they did in Florida would get him on the field faster. So, I'm wondering if he was in a huge rush to play this season, because he had about nearly a year from the time he was injured before the next season starts. Seems he didn't trust U-M doctors, and made an impulsive decision. And wouldn't they have warned him ahead of his surgery that they couldn't/wouldn't clear him?

See my post earlier in this thread. My wife is a neurologist and took a look into Biospine, where All went. It’s a for-profit surgery center and if Reddit posters are to be believed, has a few questionable ethics decisions in its past. All is the lead testimonial on their website.  which, at the very least, feels incredibly premature to give a testimonial on and even worse, anecdotes aren’t something to be considered when deciding medical treatment.

I wonder if they were willing to help him buy into a narrative that their procedures could fix him faster and M wasn’t willing to try. After all, that testimonial could open up new markets to help them grow their business…

Possibly. I also think it’s very possible that he loves his teammates and coaches. I was on the sideline Saturday and even the injured players seemed really thrilled with what was happening. I’ve observed All very actively helping with pregame drills all season after his injury.

I don’t mean to lower anyone else to raise someone up but All was about the most visible, and visibly enthusiastic, injured player I can remember in a long time.

It makes sense to me that All’s issue could be entirely with the doctors and UM hospital system. In the face of second opinions (Biospine) that may not be on the same level.

BC, AD and SF should get with these guys for a podchat.  These guys are our people.

Key statement is "If you told me we were going to hold KSU to 28 points, I would be ok with that." That about says it all.  No way Michigan is happy giving 28 points to anyone.
