OT: Lincoln Riley reportedly offered 8 yr/$96 Million by LSU
Not sure if this source is incredibly reliable, but it is a podcast I listen to from time to time. Interesting if true. A lot of $$ for a football coach.

That’s a lot of Lincoln’s…annnnd I’ll see myself out…

Dear Mr. 77, did you know that "rhino" was slang for money in the 1800s?
November 17th, 2021 at 9:12 PM ^
Although I was very young, I remember the first time I heard the term rhino to refer to money. It was soon after I left my job as a feltmaker / lacemaker, to work as a physician at my grandfather's apothecary in East London. There I was on my first day of work, when the ashman burst in asking for my uncle. Apparently he found my uncle's purse in the rubish, and inside of the purse, the ashman said, was a large sum of rhinos. I had never heard the term rhino used before to refer to money, but soon enough it was everywhere. At least until the sinking of the Lusitania. After that, for some reason, it was all ponies and monkeys.

My story begins in nineteen-dickety-two. We had to say dickety because the Kaiser had stolen our word twenty. I chased that rascal to get it back, but gave up after dickety-six miles. Then after World War Two, it got kinda quiet, 'til Superman challenged FDR to a race around the world. FDR beat him by a furlong, or so the comic books would have you believe. The truth lies somewhere in between. Three wars back we called Sauerkraut "liberty cabbage" and we called liberty cabbage "super slaw" and back then a suitcase was known as a "Swedish lunchbox." We can't bust heads like we used to, but we have our ways. One trick is to tell 'em stories that don't go anywhere - like the time I caught the ferry over to Shelbyville. I needed a new heel for my shoe, so, I decided to go to Morganville, which is what they called Shelbyville in those days. So I tied an onion to my belt, which was the style at the time. Now, to take the ferry cost a nickel, and in those days, nickels had pictures of bumblebees on 'em. Give me five bees for a quarter, you'd say. Ah, there's an interesting story behind that nickel. In 1957, I remember it was, I got up in the morning and made myself a piece of toast. I set the toaster to three: medium brown. Now where were we? Oh yeah: the important thing was I had an onion on my belt, which was the style at the time. They didn't have white onions because of the war. The only thing you could get was those big yellow ones.
November 17th, 2021 at 11:20 PM ^
You see, the thing is, back in those days, rich men would ride around in zeppelins, dropping onions on people. We'd take the onions and tie them to our belts, as many as could fit. And then we would climb trees or roofs or telegraph poles and throw the onions at the passers-by, pretending we were rich men flying around in zeppelins, dropping onions on people.
Anyways, one day I seen J. D. Rockefeller flyin’ by– so I run out of the house with a big washtub, and—Anyway, about my washtub. I just used it that morning to wash my turkey which in those days was known as a ‘walking bird.’ We’d always have walking bird on Thanksgiving, buy them 5 for a nickel in those days, and cook 'em with all the trimmings. Cranberries, sassafras and scorzonera (Vipers grass as we called it then), and yams stuffed with gunpowder. Then we’d all watch football, which in those days was called baseball.

Holy Ben Franklin, Batman. That's Mel Tucker money!
November 17th, 2021 at 4:06 PM ^
If Mel "One-year fluke wonder" can command 9.5 million/year PLUS incentives - this money is chump change for someone like Riley.
Here's hoping MSU overspends on a mediocre coach with a lottery ticket at RB.
November 17th, 2021 at 4:46 PM ^
The mediocre coach is 2-0 against Harbaugh. One of them with a team where he prob didn’t even know names of everyone on the roster yet.
This is a weird place sometimes, man.
November 17th, 2021 at 4:53 PM ^
Do you think the crowd here would be chirping that Harbaugh is 1-1 against Tucker if the win was last year? The year was a crapfest across the board. Cool, they can claim the win. alright. This year, the reason he might be paid stupid money, was solely on the back of a portal RB that is like a lottery ticket. What's so weird? Would you argue that MSU would be 9-1 if Walker did not play for them? I'd suggest 6-3 as a high ceiling. Not anything you get 9.5 million per for.
Look at their roster after this year and the outlook with their recruiting class. It is a reach to pay him that money. I think Michigan fans will eventually be glad they did.
November 17th, 2021 at 5:18 PM ^
IF the win was last year and IF Walker did not play for them. A lot of hypotheticals. The fact is that he inherited a spiraling program and stabilized it and has them at least trending in the right direction in less than 2 full years. Are they as good as their record? No, probably not. But they are certainly better than the late Dantonio teams.
And it’s not like they picked a name out of a hat to get Walker - they identified him and effectively used the portal to go get him. I personally would prefer a staff that uses all available avenues to acquire talent. Is it sustainable? Who knows. But if LSU is sniffing around then the guy is doing something right. It’s a big leap of faith - time will tell.
November 17th, 2021 at 5:23 PM ^
You’re saying a whole lot of things that don’t add up to $9.5 million per year…
Its their money to spend, not going to argue that. But that’s the highest paid coach in the country and there’s absolutely no reason to think his success is remotely sustainable. You’re not going to find a Heisman contender in the portal every offseason and his recruiting/development of other players isn’t something that jumps off the page.
MSU is more than likely to revert back to be the mean and be a 6-6 to 8-4 type team and pay their coach more than anyone in the country to do it. Again, it’s their money to spend but it doesn’t seem warranted.
November 17th, 2021 at 5:31 PM ^
I smell troll. What is RCMB saying about the offer to Tucker. They really jacked! Hit the shots hard?

November 17th, 2021 at 4:48 PM ^
Mel should be pissed with the DISRESPEKT here as Lincoln was offered more money for fewer years!!!
November 17th, 2021 at 7:06 PM ^
I’m so tired of so many posters and those who write this blog, underestimating MSU. I used to fall for it when posters/authors of this blog would say MSU was lucky, not as good as their record, benefitting from fortune, not recruiting well. But after how many years and now two coaches they are still doing that? They are good. They have good coaches. You may not like their style, I certainly don’t, but they are a really good program with a lot of stability.
November 17th, 2021 at 10:37 PM ^
Dude,
I underestimated the replay booth.
November 17th, 2021 at 11:22 PM ^
Don't worry whatever the line is next yr this blog will be full of over confidence and talking how Mel is a fraud and his 19 new transfers can't match last yrs and the last 16 yrs was due to hoke and RR and it's all luck and refs. Then after the game it will be about the crown of field or too little rain or too much rain or refs. And it's their super bowl and our focus is on OSU who we have beat once a generation. Did I mention luck. Lots of luck.

Dear Mr. Brhino,
November 17th, 2021 at 4:30 PM ^
All these agents are negotiating in public and it's really funny to watch. But if I'm Riley and I even think Mel Tucker is going to get over $9M a year I'm sure as shit going to get paid more than that based on what I've accomplished. Hell, Harbaugh should go back for a raise again if that's the going rate for coaches.
November 17th, 2021 at 4:41 PM ^
LSU cant afford MSU money for a proven playoff coach? Something smells with that Tucker offer news.
November 17th, 2021 at 4:44 PM ^
If I am not mistaken, the contract is the same amount of money, just less years. Lincoln would be making $12M/yr vs. MT at $9M/year
November 17th, 2021 at 4:41 PM ^
Nick Saban would be making $12.1M a few days after this contract is signed.

$12,000,000 a year. $1,000,000 for every regular season game or, $16,667 per minute of game time assuming a 60 minute game.
I say good for him if he can get it.

Some additional info/context I posted up yesterday, here. Just rumor-grade, at least from my side of things.
November 17th, 2021 at 5:44 PM ^
8 years for $96 million at LSU? Okay, never mind the 10 years for $96 million at Staee. I'll abandon my principles for LSU.

Using something called “The Volume” as a source. Helps clarify why people believe anything.
November 17th, 2021 at 7:26 PM ^
When this amount of money is being discussed as a salary or long-term contract, I often think that coaches need to viewed as humans. I cannot fathom how someone turns down $12 mil a year to coach the sport you love with all the resources to succeed at a big time university. Unless you had some deep-rooted, unbreakable bond to a team, school or administration, you have to take that offer, right?
November 17th, 2021 at 7:38 PM ^
Seems to me Riley should be a highly paid OC.
November 17th, 2021 at 7:56 PM ^
I’m not doubting Tuck, as he’s, obviously, blown past expectations this year, but if this deal comes to pass, it’ll be interesting to see how the MSU fanbase’s expectations change.
