Is Nico Collins the most underutilized All-American caliber WR in U-M history?
For some reason, targets aren't listed as part of a player's cumulative stats, so I went through each game to tally up Nico Collins' targets. Another note: drawn (or committed) pass interference penalties don't go down as targets unless declined pic.twitter.com/pI91EzcmUl
— Orion Sang (@orion_sang) November 4, 2019
He has 22 catches for 439 yards (20.0 ypc) and 3 TDs — and has drawn six accepted pass interference penalties, all of which converted third downs and five of which that resulted in four touchdowns and a field goal
— Orion Sang (@orion_sang) November 4, 2019
So ... based on tallying everything up ... in addition to the 22 catches for 439 yards and three touchdowns, he has also accrued 7+4+15+15-15+15+9 = 50 yards in penalty yardage and six first downs

Is the correct answer Jack Clancy?
November 4th, 2019 at 1:03 PM ^
Maizen, are you ever happy about anything?
November 4th, 2019 at 1:14 PM ^
He's happy for 30 seconds every time Michigan signs a composite 5 star recruit. Then he becomes depressed again when he realizes that every OTHER recruit isn't a 5 star.
November 4th, 2019 at 1:39 PM ^
I once gave Maizen a block of gold, he gave it back because he said it was too heavy.
November 4th, 2019 at 2:19 PM ^
I don't know if I totally agree with OP, but I can't remember when Michigan has had 4 WR's in the stable that are all gonna get drafted and yet we don't have a productive passing game...or as productive as it should / could be.
November 4th, 2019 at 2:43 PM ^
Has nothing to do with the topic at hand and everything to do with Maizen in general.
November 4th, 2019 at 4:40 PM ^
Each will have 500 receiving yards vs osu. Book it.

I don't understand why people believe, at this point, Tarik Black is a draftable prospect. He hasn't shown that. Watch football every Saturday and you'll see dozens of players who look as good and produce at a much, much higher level than Black per target. I'd be ecstatic if he were drafted, because it would mean he came back for another year and was excellent. He has not been so this year.
November 4th, 2019 at 7:03 PM ^
We have one “for sure” NFL guy, and that’s DPJ and a lot of that are his measurables. The idea that our #3 WR is a medium to high round draft prospect is silly.
There’s a reason why Bell is getting so many targets.
November 4th, 2019 at 7:05 PM ^
I agree. He started out as a productive 6’2/6’2.5 freshman receiver that ran great routes. 2 full injury plagued seasons later and now he’s a 6’5 fully weaponized man-child that will score every time if you can only get it within the same area code as him.
I like him and really hope he comes back, and I’m sure the offense hasn’t been optimal for him, but he hasn’t been playing up to the hype.
November 4th, 2019 at 9:37 PM ^
Black has not been the same since the 2 injuries. Not getting the separation he got freshman year when he was the best of the trio. Hoping he comes back fully healthy and more explosive than ever next year, and doesn’t enter the portal.
Collins is a big boy and a great downfield target...in college. He struggles to get separation on most routes. He’ll be a good red zone weapon in the NFL, but doesn’t have the speed to take the top off the defense at the professional level, where CB and safety play are much better.
DPJ has the most NFL upside per measurable. (Speed, height, vertical). He’s the proverbial freak combine athlete. Unfortunately, his route running is not very fluid, meaning he would potentially only be effective as an outside receiver early in his NFL career. The league really likes guys that can play both slot and on the outside, as this drives defenses nuts (Antonio Brown/Odell Beckham Jr)
All 3 have the potential to play in the league - none are the first round elite types we expected before the year began, even if DPJ manages to slip into late round 1 based on potential.
Yes, Shea leaves a lot to be desired in terms of reads and progressions, but this narrative that our receivers are always winning matchups and shea is missing at least 15 open receivers a game is bs.
Bell has been the best receiver this year because he runs the most slippery routes and is our best slot, and decent on the outside as well. His hands still need some work, but to be fair, all our big 4 have had some bad drops this year. Bell simply gets the most separation right now, be it because of the design of the offense or his crisp route running.
If you want to see what an elite UM receiver looks like, in terms of getting separation on both the outside and in the slot, go watch some film of Mario Manningham. His double moves were sick, and his slants were run with perfect precision. Braylon, of course, was also elite by his JR year, but he dominated mostly based on size and speed...and his hands often let him down.
Im hoping 2 of the big 3 stay, to join Bell and sansristail to form a balanced core 4.
November 4th, 2019 at 11:02 PM ^
Manningham had two great arms in Henne and Mallett throwing too him so there's that.

I don't know why but this is probably my favorite MGoBlog comment I've ever seen
November 6th, 2019 at 8:12 PM ^
This was a remarkably lucid and honest assessment of the wide receivers. Well done! I would add that our wide-outs, as has been noted many, many times, are gifted enough to win jump balls against most college secondary players, but we don't throw enough of those balls. Why we don't make more of those throws is a mystery. It could be that Shea is too skittish to do so, or cannot recognize when it's a good idea. It could be that Harbaugh zealously coaches his QB's not to put the ball in harms way. It could be both...
I don't know, but like everyone else, I'd like to see the QB's air it out downfield for our wide-outs more often.

November 4th, 2019 at 6:14 PM ^
MGoBlog just needs to recruit some better trolls. 11W is consistently getting the best ones -- granted, with an advantage of home-state jerkass talent. The guys we're getting show occasional flashes of talent, but do not have the discipline of a winner. They are 3-star trolls at best.

Devin Funchess?
November 4th, 2019 at 1:16 PM ^
He had the dropsy's at Michigan.
November 4th, 2019 at 1:23 PM ^
If you say so. I've repressed the memories I guess. He was great as a pass catcher when he was nominally a TE, moved to WR, disappeared, reemerged in the NFL as a good WR.
November 4th, 2019 at 4:20 PM ^
All I remember about Funchess at Michigan is him playing his final season like he just didn't give a shit. Which, frankly, I can't really blame him too much for.
November 4th, 2019 at 7:37 PM ^
He caught what Devin threw his way. Unfortunately, they were lobs over the middle and Funchess sacrificed his body on just about every catch. Sad story is that Funchess got racked all season long. It was sad that he let up as the season went on but I can't blame him. Funchess was getting abused in that offense while mostly in losing efforts.
November 4th, 2019 at 1:55 PM ^
I'll always him remember him joking with peppers on the sideline during that msu loss. Wasn't so funny for me or my boy who spent good money and time to make the trip and watch it.
November 4th, 2019 at 2:00 PM ^
Yeah, eff that college student for having fun during a football game or enjoying a conversation with his friend and teammate where you do not know what was discussed.
November 4th, 2019 at 2:51 PM ^
I didn't say eff him, but I also don't care what they were discussing. It could have been the world's funniest joke, but with an atmosphere that was funeral-like if you were a UM fan, it was out of place to see anyone that wasn't clad in green joking around.

Just looked at your posting history. You just might want to think about going to anger management instead of flipping out over everything.
November 4th, 2019 at 2:57 PM ^
You might want to grow up and not be concerned about whether the players demeanor is up to your standards, acting like you and your son are personally aggrieved by players laughing. Embarrassing stuff from you.

November 4th, 2019 at 4:27 PM ^
actually, its not a good look for any athlete at most any age past, say, middle school, to be yucking it up if you're getting your head handed to you by a rival. it says nothing about 'entitlement' by hillbilly, but everything about kids having their heads right for competition. that is not to say you might never have a light moment during a tense game, but as a generalization, not good.
and you can't embarrass hillbilly, he married his sister twice because both of her teeth were real pretty.
November 4th, 2019 at 6:27 PM ^
Concur on all counts.
November 4th, 2019 at 3:54 PM ^
I agree that laughing while getting one's ass beat is a bad look. That said, they are kids (yes, 18 and 19 year olds are still kids) and they will do stuff like that.
It's just not worth getting angry about it as a fan.
November 4th, 2019 at 8:38 PM ^
I didn't get the impression he or his kid were angry about it, as much as they were just not amused by it. It would certainly be an image that stuck in my mind as a fan, whether or not it's contextually fair to the players involved.
November 4th, 2019 at 4:21 PM ^

Well, this post already has me thinking ahead to November 30 and our offensive game plan. And I'm thinking that we send Nico, Tarik and DPJ deep on nearly every play and arm punt it, and hope for either a catch or a defensive PI/hold.
November 4th, 2019 at 1:23 PM ^
Chase Young says, "Yes, please exclusively run long-developing deep routes. That's a great idea..."
November 4th, 2019 at 1:31 PM ^
I know you're being funny, but the "Deep State" offenses and their modern equivalents use arm punts where the ball is out in less than three seconds to take deep shots. McSorley seemed to throw the ball as high as it went far.
Fades don't have to be 50 yards downfield, despite Michigan's use of the deep passing game.
November 4th, 2019 at 2:12 PM ^
Ha. Yes, of course. But I see it thusly:
We're damned if we do...
Well. You know the rest.
November 4th, 2019 at 1:12 PM ^
Knew who posted this before I clicked.
Classic Maizen troll drivel. Can't simply discuss the issue that Nico may be underutilized (all of the receivers are, of course, as some of us have discussed for some time); it has to be "the most underutilized All-American caliber WR in U-M history."
Then he'll say something to the effect of "I don't know how you have me confused with someone else, I just joined." Because a few people who haven't been around will buy it.
He's not serious in this. He's a troll with a limited dialectic vocabulary.
My advice to the OP: Get a hobby and spend less time online. Won't be taken, of course; never is. A few tantrums, then a ban, and then another one of his shadow accounts will start spouting off again about whichever issue sparks its fancy. Juwan Howard, perhaps.
November 4th, 2019 at 2:25 PM ^
This is so spot-on it's painful. All of his alt accounts are so glaringly obvious after a single thread response - not even a new post - that it's also painful. There's about half a dozen I've seen around in the last couple weeks that are without a doubt him.
November 4th, 2019 at 6:02 PM ^
Who....the fuck....cares. Ever consider that he might be right about some of this shit? Who else has had as much talent and has been as underutilized....go ahead, I’ll wait....
November 5th, 2019 at 10:49 AM ^
Oh hi Maizen! If you can't see what the problem with what you do is by this point after dozens on this site have tried to do (including myself), then there's truly no helping you and you need to seek some professional help for yourself. Not joking, and not mocking, but you clearly have a disorder than needs to be treated.
November 4th, 2019 at 2:59 PM ^
A small part of me wants to have an MGoContest wherein participants vie to see who can create the most convincing Maizen sockpuppet account.
