Per Sam on WTKA it sounds like Pep is sticking around - NEGBANG

Submitted by MEZman on January 23rd, 2019 at 9:59 AM

I guess at the end of yesterday's show Sam discussed that from what he was hearing from high school coaches and others it sounds like Pep is planning to stick around. He didn't find a seat in the in NFL/college head coaching round of musical chairs (or didn't find anyone willing to pay him $1.4M anyway).

It was further discussed today in segment 7 at around the 19 minute mark:

Still has 2 years on his contract so prepare yourself for UM having the highest paid QB coach in all the land... and lackluster QB recruiting as well.

And don't forget to prepare for a QB to stand in the pocket staring for 4 seconds until sacked or flushed.  I hope Gattis can fix the throw game in this scenario, but I'll believe it when it happens.

Sad really. Looked around the NFL for two months along with very little interest from Power 5 programs. Same circus as last year. The only hope now is a possible analyst role at UM, but this is not likely either.

He is probably guaranteed the money in his contract so they are trying to minimize the financial impact.

It also is a relations issue, where you want to be able to recruit coaches and firing looks worse than someone landing a new job and leaving. So you try to minimize firings.

in every public appearance i've seen, he comes across fairly standoffish and perhaps a bit detached. Do you think there's a component that he's just a bad interviewer and not getting teams excited about bringing him on?

I understand we're all trying to 86 him, but he has a ton of experience at every level, I'm surprised he didn't get SOME kind of offer from SOMEBODY.

Or with his generous UM contract maybe he's being choosy..about programs or seniority/coaching level or money. Doesn't want to be a HC at a MAC school maybe for half as much cash in a town like Muncie.

If the football program can find donors who fund European trips for 100+ people surely they can find someone who would pony up 2.8 million to buy pep out.

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong but our QB coach is going to make 500k more per year than his boss our offensive coordinator.

This is a complete joke.

Seems awkward all around.

Who makes more than their boss, especially when the boss man was brought on because the CEO thought you didn’t perform according to expectations?

Also, Gattis is supposed to also coach WEs and make less money? If this happened at OSU, I’d be lol-ing all off season.

I would like to know how Pep managed to pull in 1.4 million dollars per year...is that more than Don Brown? That is asinine. No wonder he's not going anywhere....nobody else is gonna pay him anywhere near that. What a terrible hire.

For everyone here who blindly assumes Pep will be good as a QB coach only.

Clearly Gattis was brought in to overhaul our current offense, which was part installed by Pep. The offensive philosophy of Pep and Gattis are very different. This is similar to when Harbaugh hired two different OL coaches on the same staff (Drevno and Frey) and it was a disaster. One was a zone guy and one was a power guy. Their dual coaching didn't mesh. It collided and it showed on the field. So now we have a QB coach for an offensive style in which is not his own or what he is comfortable with.

Other than wishful thinking please tell me how this is a good idea.

Long as he’s just QB coach and not developing any plays, it’s fine.

Not my money.  Harbaugh knows he overpaid for Pep and he’ll hope he finds another gig next year.

I don't think this moves the needle much offensively.  JH knows he wants/needs a different offense. I will say I don't understand it, though.  UM has the cash and you have been trying to get the guy to move on openly for two years.  Just cut him loose and pay the buyout.  Move on.

I can't imagine it not being a little awkward being demoted openly. I am sure Pep will be professional but with UM's pockets it is a risk they don't need to take.

There seems to be a lot of Pep scapegoating going on. I'm cautiously optimistic that the Gattis hire has put us on a path to resolving our offensive issues (emphasis on cautiously; I'll believe that Harbaugh is handing over the reins when I see it). If Gattis is indeed now in charge of the offense, then I don't see why keeping Pep on the staff is that big of a problem. It was never entirely clear what exactly Pep's role was to begin with, titles notwithstanding. The only thing that was clear was that the offense went through Harbaugh and that all of the offensive assistants were tasked with carrying out Harbaugh's dictates. That being the case, why are we so quick to throw Pep under the bus?

Going into the OSU game we were all pretty excited about our team, offense included. It was a tough loss for sure, but the offense wasn't even the main problem. We got beat cause we couldn't get any pressure with the front four (Mattison's unit) and if we brought extra pressure from the LB level we opened up the underneath crossing routes.

This thread is garbage. Yes, Michigan lost to OSU again and we're all sick of it, but have some gumption. This whole, "somebody's gotta pay," mindset is toxic and cowardly.

Most of you calling for the guy's job don't even understand the passing concepts you're critical of. You're just mad and want a head on a platter to make yourself feel better.

Pep is a good coach who's been doing this a long time and now we have Gattis, too. But no matter who is calling passing plays, Jim Harbaugh has control. If you're unhappy, he's the one you should be critical of.

OSU is very, very, talented and beats just about everyone. Michigan gets their best shot every year. We're still catching up to them as a program and we're getting closer. It does no good to shit on our current coaches who are working harder than any of us to make the program stronger.

This isn't about OSU. It's about having a 1.4 million dollar a year QB coach who can't find a lateral because he's not good at his job while being a minus recruiter.

Definitely feel free to explain all about your passing concepts, Pep, because I'd like to hear why you can't install an effective short and intermediate passing attack.

Seems like a genuinely nice guy.  Seems like a pretty average to below average offensive coach.  Maybe he's a great recruiter so let him focus on that.  Hopefully, Harbaugh can find the right place to use him.

Is what it is. He's not calling plays so there's not much to worry about on that front.

Stinks that Michigan has to have a financial hole burning in its pocket to have to keep him on staff. I don't want to call the man dead weight because I don't doubt that he puts in the time and effort, but he's not adding much to the staff based on the evidence we have. What really sucks is not having some new, young blood injected into the program that can take his spot and hit the recruiting trail hard.

So Pep was blamed for last season's lackluster play calling, but if I recall correctly, the final decision maker for play calling was Jim Harbaugh, right? Meaning, Jim always had the ability to override Pep's calls, and therefore quite likely did so at least occasionally in every game, right? If that's true, then it makes perfect sense to me that after one's boss overrides one's play calls a few times, that person will start altering their play calls to conform to his boss's wishes/style. So if Pep is no longer calling plays but the boss is still in a position to override the new play caller's plays, then exactly what has changed?

The issue with Pep isn’t so much in the calling of plays as it is in play design.

As passing game coordinator, his job would have been to design the passing plays and route trees. So whether he physically called the plays or not, he is responsible for the long developing passing plays and the absence of routes that create separation.

Pep is responsible for the passing game. Play calling be damned. And how he performed in his duties handicapped this team.
