Per Sam on WTKA it sounds like Pep is sticking around - NEGBANG
I guess at the end of yesterday's show Sam discussed that from what he was hearing from high school coaches and others it sounds like Pep is planning to stick around. He didn't find a seat in the in NFL/college head coaching round of musical chairs (or didn't find anyone willing to pay him $1.4M anyway).
It was further discussed today in segment 7 at around the 19 minute mark:

Still has 2 years on his contract so prepare yourself for UM having the highest paid QB coach in all the land... and lackluster QB recruiting as well.
January 23rd, 2019 at 10:53 AM ^
And don't forget to prepare for a QB to stand in the pocket staring for 4 seconds until sacked or flushed. I hope Gattis can fix the throw game in this scenario, but I'll believe it when it happens.
January 23rd, 2019 at 10:55 AM ^
Sad really. Looked around the NFL for two months along with very little interest from Power 5 programs. Same circus as last year. The only hope now is a possible analyst role at UM, but this is not likely either.
January 23rd, 2019 at 11:32 AM ^
Whats wrong with a good old fashion firing. Our society has become tolerant of incompetent, "every kid kids a ribbon" people. We will all be speaking Chinese in 10 years if this continues.
January 23rd, 2019 at 11:47 AM ^
He is probably guaranteed the money in his contract so they are trying to minimize the financial impact.
It also is a relations issue, where you want to be able to recruit coaches and firing looks worse than someone landing a new job and leaving. So you try to minimize firings.
January 23rd, 2019 at 4:45 PM ^
So you think Sam is wrong about Pep staying on as QB coach? Pep would actually get demoted to analyst to make room for McDaniels? Seems crazy not to just buy him out at that point.
January 24th, 2019 at 12:10 PM ^
in every public appearance i've seen, he comes across fairly standoffish and perhaps a bit detached. Do you think there's a component that he's just a bad interviewer and not getting teams excited about bringing him on?
I understand we're all trying to 86 him, but he has a ton of experience at every level, I'm surprised he didn't get SOME kind of offer from SOMEBODY.
Or with his generous UM contract maybe he's being choosy..about programs or seniority/coaching level or money. Doesn't want to be a HC at a MAC school maybe for half as much cash in a town like Muncie.
January 23rd, 2019 at 10:57 AM ^
If the football program can find donors who fund European trips for 100+ people surely they can find someone who would pony up 2.8 million to buy pep out.
January 24th, 2019 at 3:02 PM ^
I'm sure it's a lot easier to give $750K for a trip of a lifetime for 100+ people, than 3-4x that amount to pay somebody not to work in your department. But hey - people spend money on crazy things!
January 23rd, 2019 at 11:13 AM ^
Pep is definitely resting and vesting.
January 23rd, 2019 at 11:17 AM ^
This news sure took some Pep out of my step.
January 23rd, 2019 at 11:37 AM ^
Oh well. Gattis will need someone to wash his Land Rover and pick up his dry cleaning.
January 23rd, 2019 at 11:50 AM ^
What an embarrassment
January 23rd, 2019 at 11:52 AM ^
Fuck. Of course nobody will hire him, he fucking sucks.
January 23rd, 2019 at 7:56 PM ^
Nobody will offer him a contract worth walking away from a $1.5 million dollar salary*
There. Fixed it for you.
January 23rd, 2019 at 11:55 AM ^
If only there was a place he could go, maybe register or sign in, that would show all teams he is looking around for other opportunities. Sad.
January 23rd, 2019 at 11:58 AM ^
Someone please correct me if I'm wrong but our QB coach is going to make 500k more per year than his boss our offensive coordinator.
This is a complete joke.
January 23rd, 2019 at 12:00 PM ^
Seems awkward all around.
Who makes more than their boss, especially when the boss man was brought on because the CEO thought you didn’t perform according to expectations?
Also, Gattis is supposed to also coach WEs and make less money? If this happened at OSU, I’d be lol-ing all off season.
January 23rd, 2019 at 12:05 PM ^
I would like to know how Pep managed to pull in 1.4 million dollars per year...is that more than Don Brown? That is asinine. No wonder he's not going anywhere....nobody else is gonna pay him anywhere near that. What a terrible hire.
January 23rd, 2019 at 12:17 PM ^
How can they afford him and Gattis?
January 23rd, 2019 at 7:57 PM ^
Because the football program basically prints it’s own money...
January 23rd, 2019 at 12:41 PM ^
For everyone here who blindly assumes Pep will be good as a QB coach only.
Clearly Gattis was brought in to overhaul our current offense, which was part installed by Pep. The offensive philosophy of Pep and Gattis are very different. This is similar to when Harbaugh hired two different OL coaches on the same staff (Drevno and Frey) and it was a disaster. One was a zone guy and one was a power guy. Their dual coaching didn't mesh. It collided and it showed on the field. So now we have a QB coach for an offensive style in which is not his own or what he is comfortable with.
Other than wishful thinking please tell me how this is a good idea.
January 23rd, 2019 at 12:46 PM ^
It's not. It is an atrocious idea and one that could drive Gattis away.
January 23rd, 2019 at 12:52 PM ^
The only people who think Pep will be a good QB coach are blind homers. Our QB play has been SHIT since he got here. Even Shea didn't develop very much this year.
January 23rd, 2019 at 12:45 PM ^
Just fire him and pay him out for Christ's sake. This is humiliating to Pep and the program.
January 23rd, 2019 at 12:47 PM ^
Long as he’s just QB coach and not developing any plays, it’s fine.
Not my money. Harbaugh knows he overpaid for Pep and he’ll hope he finds another gig next year.
January 23rd, 2019 at 1:13 PM ^
He's been hoping he finds a new gig for 2 years in a row
January 23rd, 2019 at 12:51 PM ^
I don't think this moves the needle much offensively. JH knows he wants/needs a different offense. I will say I don't understand it, though. UM has the cash and you have been trying to get the guy to move on openly for two years. Just cut him loose and pay the buyout. Move on.
I can't imagine it not being a little awkward being demoted openly. I am sure Pep will be professional but with UM's pockets it is a risk they don't need to take.
January 23rd, 2019 at 12:57 PM ^
There seems to be a lot of Pep scapegoating going on. I'm cautiously optimistic that the Gattis hire has put us on a path to resolving our offensive issues (emphasis on cautiously; I'll believe that Harbaugh is handing over the reins when I see it). If Gattis is indeed now in charge of the offense, then I don't see why keeping Pep on the staff is that big of a problem. It was never entirely clear what exactly Pep's role was to begin with, titles notwithstanding. The only thing that was clear was that the offense went through Harbaugh and that all of the offensive assistants were tasked with carrying out Harbaugh's dictates. That being the case, why are we so quick to throw Pep under the bus?
January 23rd, 2019 at 1:00 PM ^
Pep has been the QB coach since he got here. Have you seen our QBs looking well prepared in a timely fashion?
I sure haven't.
January 23rd, 2019 at 12:59 PM ^
Going into the OSU game we were all pretty excited about our team, offense included. It was a tough loss for sure, but the offense wasn't even the main problem. We got beat cause we couldn't get any pressure with the front four (Mattison's unit) and if we brought extra pressure from the LB level we opened up the underneath crossing routes.
This thread is garbage. Yes, Michigan lost to OSU again and we're all sick of it, but have some gumption. This whole, "somebody's gotta pay," mindset is toxic and cowardly.
Most of you calling for the guy's job don't even understand the passing concepts you're critical of. You're just mad and want a head on a platter to make yourself feel better.
Pep is a good coach who's been doing this a long time and now we have Gattis, too. But no matter who is calling passing plays, Jim Harbaugh has control. If you're unhappy, he's the one you should be critical of.
OSU is very, very, talented and beats just about everyone. Michigan gets their best shot every year. We're still catching up to them as a program and we're getting closer. It does no good to shit on our current coaches who are working harder than any of us to make the program stronger.
January 23rd, 2019 at 1:02 PM ^
This isn't about OSU. It's about having a 1.4 million dollar a year QB coach who can't find a lateral because he's not good at his job while being a minus recruiter.
Definitely feel free to explain all about your passing concepts, Pep, because I'd like to hear why you can't install an effective short and intermediate passing attack.
January 23rd, 2019 at 1:14 PM ^
He failed at paring down a complex NFL route tree with option routes which professionals dedicate full time hours to learning and college kids get 20 hours a week in season
January 24th, 2019 at 1:12 AM ^
So you are telling me he chose to install a system here that our kids will never have enough time to learn?
Wow what a genius idea. Let's pay him more money.
January 23rd, 2019 at 1:03 PM ^
If Pep is so good at what he does why was he just demoted smart guy?
January 23rd, 2019 at 1:12 PM ^
How’s Ben Mcdaniels feeling right now...also at least Drevno took a lump sum and left without much hoopla 1.4 million ouch.
January 23rd, 2019 at 1:17 PM ^
Seems like a genuinely nice guy. Seems like a pretty average to below average offensive coach. Maybe he's a great recruiter so let him focus on that. Hopefully, Harbaugh can find the right place to use him.
GO BLUE!
January 23rd, 2019 at 8:00 PM ^
Definitely NOT a good recruiter. Easily one of the worst, if not THE worst recruiter on the staff.
January 23rd, 2019 at 1:26 PM ^
Obviously we need another season on Amazon Prime to rehabilitate Pep's image.
January 23rd, 2019 at 1:28 PM ^
Is what it is. He's not calling plays so there's not much to worry about on that front.
Stinks that Michigan has to have a financial hole burning in its pocket to have to keep him on staff. I don't want to call the man dead weight because I don't doubt that he puts in the time and effort, but he's not adding much to the staff based on the evidence we have. What really sucks is not having some new, young blood injected into the program that can take his spot and hit the recruiting trail hard.
January 23rd, 2019 at 2:27 PM ^
Honestly - where has this Harbaugh been? What's with the robot who replaced him? I feel like kids fed off this passion.
January 23rd, 2019 at 8:02 PM ^
It’s generally believed that Harbaugh’s fire and sideline antics were rubbing officials the wrong way and it reflected in the way they were calling games. So Harbaugh toned it down quite a bit.
January 24th, 2019 at 8:05 PM ^
8 million and the keys to AA will make you calm and lazy
January 24th, 2019 at 1:15 AM ^
I miss this so much. Come back old school Jim, we need you.
January 23rd, 2019 at 3:55 PM ^
Gonna end up as a Fry/Drevno situation. Pathetic. The right choice is not that hard.
January 23rd, 2019 at 4:54 PM ^
This seems Dantonio-esque
January 23rd, 2019 at 6:35 PM ^
Let him go.
January 23rd, 2019 at 6:48 PM ^
So Pep was blamed for last season's lackluster play calling, but if I recall correctly, the final decision maker for play calling was Jim Harbaugh, right? Meaning, Jim always had the ability to override Pep's calls, and therefore quite likely did so at least occasionally in every game, right? If that's true, then it makes perfect sense to me that after one's boss overrides one's play calls a few times, that person will start altering their play calls to conform to his boss's wishes/style. So if Pep is no longer calling plays but the boss is still in a position to override the new play caller's plays, then exactly what has changed?
January 23rd, 2019 at 8:15 PM ^
The issue with Pep isn’t so much in the calling of plays as it is in play design.
As passing game coordinator, his job would have been to design the passing plays and route trees. So whether he physically called the plays or not, he is responsible for the long developing passing plays and the absence of routes that create separation.
Pep is responsible for the passing game. Play calling be damned. And how he performed in his duties handicapped this team.
