MBB: Two undefeated teams left
Temple beat Houston tonight to drop another team from the ranks of the undefeated. In the greatest end of game call I've ever seen, the ref had the (appropriate) guts to call a charge on a buzzer-beater drive to the hoop. Bucket was good, but got waived off. Congrats to the ref who didn't 'swallow the whistle'. Totally the right call.
Btw, last year's Houston team looked way more dangerous than this year's version.
Only M and Virginia remain loss-less. Go Blue.

We just need UVA to play UMBC now... or us. :)
edit: Down goes OSU as well. To Rutgers LOL.

Congratulations, MK. MGoBlog's readership has apparently forgotten that you are -- by all appearances, anyway -- a poseur.
January 9th, 2019 at 11:28 PM ^
MK went from hated to loved around here. Quite the image reclamation.

The lithium medication seems to be working.

Rough night for ranked teams. #11 Auburn lost to Ole Miss, #21 Marquette is in OT at Creighton, #9 Va Tech escaped Georgia Tech by 3 and #16 OSU is in a dog fight at the RAC
January 9th, 2019 at 9:14 PM ^
Watching the OSU-Rutgers game right now and bah gawd Rutgers’ entire offense seems to be built around how to get the worse shot possible.
January 9th, 2019 at 9:15 PM ^
Rutgers huge shot to go up 3...not a great shot but he made the midrange fadeaway
January 9th, 2019 at 9:15 PM ^
Rutgers 64 OSU 61.
Hard to win on the road in the Big Ten.
January 10th, 2019 at 2:44 AM ^
Second night in a row. Good to be into conference play when good teams are playing other relatively good teams and everyone is going on the road half the time.
January 9th, 2019 at 9:13 PM ^
Sampson collapsed to his hands and knees after the call. What a cheating loser. Deserves to lose every game like tonight or from Jordan Poole daggers like last year
January 9th, 2019 at 9:16 PM ^
My Rutgers Scarlet Knights also just beat OSU 64-61.

RUTGER!!!
January 9th, 2019 at 9:20 PM ^
No, Rutgers doing something positive is a "Reverse Rutger", and for the sake of the universe, they should NOT do this often - unless it involves beating Ohio State, of course.
January 9th, 2019 at 10:40 PM ^
but there is still only one of them.....hence Rutger
January 10th, 2019 at 4:16 AM ^
If they want to really do us a solid, they should drop an L on Sparty.
January 10th, 2019 at 9:24 AM ^
For that..... I would agree with giving them there "s" back. But only for that post.
January 9th, 2019 at 9:16 PM ^
someone needs to make a Rutger thread
January 9th, 2019 at 9:16 PM ^
And OSU loses to Rutgers in Jersey. Great night for Michigan
January 9th, 2019 at 9:16 PM ^
Ohio State just lost to Rutgers, officially a good Wednesday night
January 9th, 2019 at 9:17 PM ^
Rutgers is tough to watch but it was worth watching OSU lose
January 9th, 2019 at 9:18 PM ^
OSU just lost to Rutgers.
January 9th, 2019 at 9:18 PM ^
Rutgers should be temporarily awarded Ohio State's former conference room at the Residence Inn Ann Arbor.
January 9th, 2019 at 9:19 PM ^
Hehehehe.
Rutgers tried to desperately Rutgers that game away, and yet they STILL won. LOVE IT!!!
This middle finger is for you, Buckeyes.

The State University of New Jersey beats tOSU. Happy night

I don't like Houston, but I also HATE the charge rule. It is, and always has been, a dumb rule to me. The kid on Houston made an amazing play to get past his guy and then the help side defnder just stands there. It's just a dumb and dangerous rule
January 9th, 2019 at 9:26 PM ^
Username checks out.
The only problem with the charge rule is that it's not called enough. Offensive players have way too much of an advantage in basketball.
This is basically the equivalent of somebody named basketballguy saying that they hate the illegal man downfield rule.
January 9th, 2019 at 9:29 PM ^
No, it's absolutely not, and there are valid criticisms of the charge rule. This isn't just a random hot take.
January 9th, 2019 at 9:34 PM ^
There are valid criticisms of the charge rule when it's not applied correctly. This was not one of those times.
You want a football comparison (well you don't, but J seemed to), it's like OPI/DPI.
January 9th, 2019 at 10:57 PM ^
Yes, it'd be like arguing that OPI shouldn't be a thing. No good reason not to other than to allow offenses to do whatever they want to do and not reward defenses for playing well.
January 9th, 2019 at 9:32 PM ^
It's a rule about position, which defenders often have but the offense is allowed to back them down and physically move them from the spot with no call. Or the defender, who has from the floor to the ceiling, has the offense fly into their straight up arms, only to get a defensive foul. The offense gets the benefit of the call on position far more than the D.
It was legit basketball position, outside the cone of charging silence, and a great, gutsy call by the official.
January 9th, 2019 at 10:05 PM ^
You are so correct here. Sunday I believe it was Morgan who came flying in over the top of Brazdeikis to slam home a put back-which was totally a foul on Morgan-but no call and they got the basket...bad, bad no call. I think they should turn this into a review flag situation where the call gets reviewed remotely-it is that poorly called live.
January 9th, 2019 at 11:01 PM ^
I think it was #3 on IU and I said the same thing when it happened. Iggy had position, the guy literally bowled him over to slam it in. I don't really mind the no call there as I don't mind giving the offense a little bit of an edge, but yeah, you have to draw the line somewhere and simply doing away with the charge rule would be insane.
If there was no charging, what would stop Zion Williamson from literally just charging his way to the hoop as hard as he can knocking over everyone in his path on his way to the hoop. While that is a fun sport to watch, it's called football. Basketball is not simply about who is the biggest guy on the court. It's much more of a skill game.
January 9th, 2019 at 11:07 PM ^
As they say, basketball is not a contact sport.
January 9th, 2019 at 11:11 PM ^
You mean like how Calipari coached John Randle to do on their way to a National Championship? I still can’t believe the refs repeatedly watched him simply run into people and they called nothing or a defensive foul.
If I remember correctly Beilein was not pleased with it either.
January 10th, 2019 at 1:44 AM ^
I think you mean Julius Randle. John Randle was a hall of fame defensive tackle for the Vikings I believe.
January 10th, 2019 at 5:53 AM ^
I just had a vision of Zion Williamson as a very large bowling ball, knocking the opposing team members out of the way like a perfectly thrown strike on his way to the basket. More likely, he would fly over them for the dunk.
January 9th, 2019 at 9:39 PM ^
The defender with both hands straight up that get a foul called because the offensive player shoots into their arms is the dumbest rule ever. You either block a shot or keep your hands down.
January 9th, 2019 at 9:46 PM ^
That's not a rule
January 9th, 2019 at 10:01 PM ^
Can you tell us how Texas is better than UNC and how great Sparty is again?
January 9th, 2019 at 10:00 PM ^
The charge rule was just poorly officiated.
The game is moving too far in the direction of allowing offensive players to initiate contact. A defensive player is entitled to his position and you cannot just bowl him over, jump into him, or push off with an arm. At least they are calling players who use their arm to hook a defensive player now.
January 10th, 2019 at 2:07 AM ^
NBA officials are actually pretty good about not blowing the whistle when offensive players initiate contact. There's a lot more contact in the paint that goes uncalled in the NBA. Not so in college.
January 10th, 2019 at 6:40 AM ^
Except James Harden. F James Harden
January 10th, 2019 at 8:35 AM ^
I tend to agree that the rule needs to be changed. I didn’t see the play so this comment doesn’t have anything to do with the validity of the call last night. Personally, if the offensive player has already picked up his/her dribble and the defensive player slides in front the player while on the way to the basket, it should not be a charge. If the player was already standing there, then ok.
January 9th, 2019 at 9:24 PM ^
John Beilein ROCKS
January 9th, 2019 at 9:45 PM ^
I know you all have been concentrating on talking about Michigan and Virginia in this thread, but Rutgers just beat OSU.
January 9th, 2019 at 9:50 PM ^
Don't kid yourself, expect a tight game at illini.
Road always tough in big.
Go Blue.
January 9th, 2019 at 10:53 PM ^
Yeah, despite being undefeated, Houston was only 32nd or something in torvik coming into the game. Lot of close wins and not great competition. Still very good at defense, not nearly as good on offense without man bun.
January 9th, 2019 at 11:19 PM ^
What ever happened to ole man bun?
