Who cares, our defensive line sucked when it counted anyway. At least now we know we could run for 20 yards on a QB draw on 3rd and 15 against OSU if we wanted to. Not sure that play is in the playbook, however.

This feels bad more than it is bad but all the shitty fans (which is 90% of this board lately) who are rationalizing it by saying he's a bad coach are ridiculous.  He's a great DL coach and he was a very good DC. Our DL issues were all about injuries, our DL was great even with Rashan's and Aubrey's issues and only after Winovich got injured did it become ineffectual. We've always praised him for being our best position coach and one of our best recruiters but now he's a hack? Gimme a break, you guys are jokes, we were all worried he was going to retire like two days ago. And that's why this isn't that bad, he was going to be gone to retirement within the next two years anyway. It just feels bad because he's been one of our favorites and now he's joining the evil empire.

Being reported that Mattison has a history with Ryan Day from their time at Florida (Day was GA).  Same with the new CO-DC that's coming in from San Fran.  Could be that Ryan Day has a small pool of colleagues for whom he can contact.

This petty nonsense will eventually come back to bite Ohio State.  I love Mattison, but he is not the right guy for the job there.  This is either a panic move by OSU or done purely out of spite.

Still wish him the best except when they play M.

It's neither a panic move, nor done out of spite.  They hired a 39 year old with no prior DC experience to be co-DC.  Mattison is there to run the defense for a couple or three years while they groom Hafley for the job.  It's the perfect fit for Mattison, and could very well wind up being a great move by OSU, assuming Hafley is able to grow into the DC role.

You can argue about whether going with Hafley is the right decision, but once you accept that they made that decision, it's hard to imagine doing better than getting a very sold DC who recruits well and is getting ready to retire to come in for 2-3 years to mentor him.

As for Hafley, time will tell. OSU fans are upset because he's not a big name.  But he was an excellent recruiter at Rutgers, is an excellent DB coach, and is young with lots of charisma and energy.  If he convinced Day (and presumably Urban) that he has DC potential, so be it.

In any event, it doesn't seem like something that can go too terribly wrong for OSU.  If Hafley isn't ready when Mattison retires, they can just go hire someone else.

And not a big loss for UM.  Maybe some embarrassment for a day or two, but really, not much impact in the long run.

What the fucking fuck?

I'm not reading the other 250-some posts that I missed, but I'll just say this: Fuck you, too, Greg.

I don't care if this move is nothing more than a year long grooming of their new DC Hafwit (or whatever), it's a knife to the back.  Maybe time will heal, but it's probably time I don't have...

WTF???  Never saw this coming.  I figured he'd retire here.

Leaving for a new gig is one thing, but to go to OSU?  That really is a slap in the face.  I know he did it before when he went to ND, but this is worse.  I'd rather he'd gone to some SEC school.  At least then he'd get better weather in the winter.

dang...OSU fans are not impressed at all...lol  good.  I mean why would they be? And people on this thread saying they will know us in and out now..uh they already do.

This hire, the co-dc hire is baffling....hopefully this is the start of ryan day putting them back a bit.

OOo boy that game come November is going ot be interesting as hell....i dont think greg will get a warm welcome

I don't understand anyone blasting G-Matt for this move, especially when we don't have all the facts.  At the very worst, he left for a better position.  Hard to fault him for that.  And if the rumor that Harbs did not want to extend him is true then we really can't find any fault there.

I respect all the work that GM did for Michigan and believe that he gave the school his all and acted with pure class.  I can't say a bad word about the guy.

And frankly, I don't think it hurts us all that much.  They can give Al Washington more responsibility and keep him in the fold longer. They can also go out and find another quality coach and recruiter to add to the staff.

This is odd, but not necessarily a bad thing.

In related news, Ohio State has announced that Larry Johnson has been promoted to assistant head coach.  He will continue coaching the DL.  But definitely squashes any thoughts that Mattison was going to coach the DL or that Johnson was leaving.

I don't see this as a massive blow tbh.. promote Washington to D-Line Coach/Co-DC (simply title for the pay raise), go out and find another ace recruiter to handle the OLB/Viper position, give Partridge some kind of promotion, move on.

Matty is a solid coach and good recruiter.. nothing that can't be replaced with younger talent.

I dunno. It's one thing if you're an up-and-coming coach, and moving to a rival school is your way to make that big career leap. It's another when you're already established.

I don't know what GM's status or future was here, but a guy with his reputation has other options. Going to the enemy seems pretty mercenary, verging on vindictive. Anywhere but OSU would be fine.

This ain't Google vs. Apple, and college football isn't the same as the NFL.

This is Michigan vs. OSU.

I simply can't imagine a scenario where I'd be lured to work at OSU, especially if my job had anything to do with sports. Their athletic department embarrassed itself last year, and eww - Columbus.

IMO not a classy move.

Well, this totally sucks. Why would a guy GM’s age who’s a so called “M Man” head for OSU at this stage of the game? Maybe Harbaugh’s way of opening things up for Washington?

Really sad. Sad and bewildering he left but leave for OSU? Wow. Disheartening to say the least.

I guess I find myself ...... not upset.

I mean, he's taking a promotion and presumably more money, and in the end, that's what the business is about anyway. In coaching, rarely does there seem to be room for the loyalty that some people on the radio thought existed here, and I am OK with that.

For those saying it's a no-brainer for a coach to do this, move from position to co-coordinator, ask yourself if you would do it as a Michigan fan. Would you move to OSU straight from Michigan? I know I wouldn't. Ever.

GMatt has no loyalty to Michigan. He's a mercenary, and that's fine, but I don't have to like mercenaries. I like Michigan Men.

So screw you GMatt. I'll enjoy beating your shitty D-Line next year.

Next.

It's going to be okay. How much longer do you think he was going to coach anyways? World will keep spinning. We will be okay. Hoping this leads to some bigger changes. Take the emotion out of it and what are you left with? Another team gave one of our assistants a promotion and a raise. A guy we thought was retiring anyways. This won't make or break anything. Moving on...

Lets be honest it’s his age that has us more like “wtf” than anything, right? If he was a kick ass 46 year old coach on the up and took this job we’d say “that sucks ball sacks” but we get it...promotion at arguably the #3 school behind Bama and Clemson right now.

But homeboy is 70 and seemed really happy at UM. I don’t find myself overly upset. It’s more of a weird feeling. Like my ex girlfriend who I don’t have feelings for at all banged some dude I don’t like while I have a new, smoking hot fitness competiror (a non crazy one) girlfriend. I’m not mad, but have a weird feeling I can’t put my finger on. But I also won’t miss any sleep. It’s just...weird.

This comment belongs in a lot of threads, but I'll stick it here because I get the feeling this thread is gonna have a lot of views in the next few days.

For those who believe in this University, we do so not because of a single person, play or place. Michigan means something to us personally. Whether we went here or not, sent or will send our kids here, we chose this place because what happens here is highly significant and relevant. It meant something to us then, and it does still now.

Take at the world stage; it is full of Michigan alumni, faculty and supporters doing truly amazing work. It is no pedestrian coincidence that our alumni and faculty have won all the most prestigious awards in academics, athletics, and far beyond. If you find your support waning because a run of negativity has clouded our fan base, look within yourself. Remember why you care about Michigan, and hold pride in that.

We are a lot more than a "football school" or a "basketball school". That being said, success in athletics is undoubtedly part of our DNA. We expect to beat our rivals because it's part of who we are as fans. But for the love of this University, please try to find something more than a cloud of negativity on which to hang your hat. It's a pretty cool place, this Michigan of ours. I'll support it to the bitter end.

I would say "fine, whatever we beat Notre Dame the years he was there and not Michigan" however we were 3-3 with no rhyme or reason to scores.

Still.

Nothing is real.   It's gone pear shaped in my head.  Loyalty is absolutely dead.  Whatever.

Crap move by Mattison, but it is a promotion so I guess you can't be too bitter. Plus he's 70 years old so who knows how much he has left. I also think Mattison and Brown may have not always seen eye to eye so that could be part of it.

Harbaugh needs to get the house in order. I'd like to see Pep let go and an investment in a young coordinator that preaches tempo. If Brown and/or Washington moves on, might need the same thing on that side of the ball.

Ramifications of the ass raping we took in Columbus are still being felt.  Add in the fact that we weren’t even remotely competitive in the bowl game, it’s ugly in Ann Arbor right now

Harbaugh has to get his house in order right quick

Wow this really sucks. Now OSU will know all Michigan's secrets, I'll bet we won't be able to get any pressure on their QB even with multiple NFL guys on our DL.
