Greg Mattison Rumblings

Submitted by DaveHuck on January 7th, 2019 at 1:04 PM

Isiaah Hole just tweeted out an “woo boy”, followed by a “Say it ain’t so Matty” from Chris Wormley. Rumblings starting that Greg Mattison May be announcing retirement. Nothing confirmed, but there are several tweets with Mattison’s name linked.  Bummer, if true.

Regardless if this actually comes to pass or not, it is surprising that Michigan didn't hear his contract to avoid such a possibility.  Enos had a contract preventing him from directly going to another SEC team, so it can be done legally (not that it is hard to work around, but nevertheless).

IIRC, Mattison said he'd sign on for a few years after Harbaugh came and was leaning toward retirement in the future.  He was glad to be in Ann Arbor to be near his family.  So, when the noise started about perhaps retiring, this wasn't surprising to me.

Something seemed to be going on with the defense in the last few games.  Also, the strange departure of Solomon.  If Greg is being allowed to walk or has chosen to walk, then this would signal that Harbaugh is siding with the players about whatever may have happened.

WTF?!  No coach who worked with Bo would do this.   Washington and Mattison?  If true, F both those guys.  I remember when Mattison went to ND and people were pissed.

College football is totally a business now and is nothing about school and loyalty.  Totally losing interest.

It doesn't matter if it is the waterboy.  It's weird having Warinner be a Michigan coach, but he at least came from Minnesota and not directly from OSU.  Mattison has been a great recruiter and Michigan Man, but you just don't go to OSU directly from Michigan.    Oh well.  He's 69 and will turn 70 during the season.  Hopefully his enthusiasm is waning.  3 Dimensional chess by Harbaugh?  take them down from within?

Good for Matty. He’s a great guy and coach but coaching is a young mans game. Who wants to die on the road in rental car with a cheeseburger hanging out of their mouth while driving from high school to high school?

Ride off into the sunset man. You’ve earned it.

Assuming that Don Brown goes to Temple, how happy would we all be if:

  • Mattison were promoted to DC
  • Washington or Partridge gets the DL and we hire a new defensive position coach?

I think the answer is that we'd all be like WTF?

This is shocking because we all basically believed that Mattison was going to coach DL here until he retired.

It's weird because this is apparently a move to be a DC again at a top program, which: I can understand that.

It's painful because it's OSU.

It's weird that Mattison is pretty clearly not even a backup choice for DC here (with Brown 50-50 to leave, per some rumblings, if Mattison were in line to replace him I would think that he would stick it out if he wanted the job).

It stinks because Mattison was really good at coaching DL.

This stinks. I'm not actually positive that he's a great choice to be a top-flight DC anymore, but it stinks all the same. Because he's leaving us for OSU.

I guess I can understand it for the promotion. But he's leaving us for OSU.

Well if he's going there to be the new defensive coordinator, good for him. Coach Mattison's given a ton to Michigan over the years and if this is something he wants, then I'd hope we as a fan base could support him. For the "oh no he's going to our rival" crowd - and I mean this as no offense to Coach Mattison - but so what?  It sucks for our player development but either we'll get worse and still lose to OSU (already been doing that with him on our staff ), stay the same and maybe still lose to OSU, or hire someone new and get better and beat OSU (will need more than just the D-Line to improve). Let's not shit on a guy who has given many great years to our team. He is and was a great coach who was generally loved by the players and developed some serious talent to play our our D-Lines and put guys in the league.

Dang ...in his old age he must've been confused as to which coaches all of you DID want fired.

Thanks GMatt for helping us transition through some rough times; sorry however, but you are now one day away from the game passing you by :)

This has happened before.  Runs off some talented players then bolts for a rival school.

If he wants to be DC at OSU, then fine.  He hasn't run a defense in over a decade.  All he did in Baltimore was maintain what they were already doing.

I mean, this sucks because he's once again going to one of our rivals.  He did this to us before, bailing on us to go to Notre Dame, but that time it was a lateral move.  This time, he'd be taking a promotion, which, you know, what are you going to do?  Harbaugh demoted him from DC to DL coach, which is a MAJOR demotion.  So if someone wants to make him DC again, you can't really be mad at him for wanting to be a DC.

It's just bullshit that it is Ohio State.

How long can he realistically continue to coach for? The DC has more responsibility and he's been thinking about retiring for a few years now. Does this mean that we can tell all the recruits Matty is retiring since OSU has been telling recruits that for 5 years?

really shocked at this... i thought GMatt would retire here, and if not, i certainly didn't think he'd go to OSU...

real head scratcher here...

edit: I mean if the reports of Michigan not renewing his contract are true, then I can't blame him i guess...Michigan probably wanted to lock in Washington maybe as DL long term?

Doug Karsh just said that Jim and Don Brown didn't renew his contract, so he left for OSU. Supposedly he informed his d-lineman last night he wouldn't be back.

edit: Not true, just a rumor that was shot down.
