Ohio State officially announces Mike Yurcich as new QB coach

Submitted by Wolverine0007 on January 3rd, 2019 at 3:00 AM

One day after OSU secures the Rose Bowl and caps off their 13-1 season, what do they do? They hire Mike Yurcich as their new QB coach/passing game coordinator.  I interpret that this means Day may be shifting away from the type of Urban Meyer offenses that rely more on QB's who can run but not throw in favor of more pro-style QB's.

And what do we do after we end the season with two major face plants? Nothing. Pep is still here along with all the uncertainty of whether Harbaugh is going to revamp the offense by bringing in an OC.

Oklahoma has the #1 offense in S&P.

Also, Oklahoma scored 4 TDs in 8 possession which comes out to half of the drive which is still great. It's because Army holds onto the ball for nearly 45 minutes. Pretty easy to hold Oklahoma to 28 points if you don't give them the opportunity to drive down the field.

Michigan is also the #6 overall S&P team.  Somehow rated above ND and UF. Do we really believe they are the 6th best team in the country?

If OU's Big 12 defense could get some 3 and outs on a service academy, maybe they'd have more time to score with that awesome offense.

I'm with the OP, why didn't we jump on Mike Yurcich when we had the chance?  The guy's pedigree is beyond doubt.  Saint Francis, IU, Edinboro, Shippensburg and OK St.  Moves from OC to passing game coordinator.  Definite move up the ladder.

Well it was announced to the public a while ago that Urban was leaving (I suspect Day has known much longer).  So, he knew he'd have an opening on his staff and he has obviously been working on filling that opening.

If Michigan wants to make a change, they have to move a guy out first.

Man, this is such a tired "take." tOSU is changing head coaches - that means that changes on their staff are all but guaranteed - and were most likely completed well in advance of this announcement. I think we would all agree that Michigan's O needs to become more dynamic with the bevvy of talent available - but change for the sake of change is not great. JH went after Dan Enos last year - that was and would have been an amazing hire. Let's go ahead and give him the benefit of the doubt that he'll make necessary changes.

For the record, you are also freaking out about the hiring of a guy that has 6 years of FBS coordinator experience and has produced exactly 1 NFL caliber QB in Mason Rudolph. The same Mason Rudolph who is currently listed as QB3 on the Steelers depth chart behind Josh Dobbs. Guy could be great - but let's calm down a bit.

We should use Gundy's approach when he hired Yurcich. A quick internet search tells me that the top FCS offense is at Davidson under first year Head Coach Scott Abell.  No OC, so i'm assuming he's calling the plays since he doubles as the QB coach.

Sign him up.

Man if we run this retarded offense again with a retarded game plan again against OSU again then next year we'll all be bitching again about the offense again and the wasted opportunity and fucked up end of the season again.

I think Harbaugh will make the right moves.  He may be stubborn, but last year he made changes we needed (new strength coach, vastly improved o-line).  Against popular opinion, however, I am not convinced that Pep is the issue.  Harbaugh is probably more to blame than Pep for that offense.

No offense but those two changes are nothing to hang our hat on.  I think one of our BIGGEST issues is in the strength and conditioning part of the game, our guys looked winded and overmatched late in the year. BIG TIME. Shit, Nicco ran two plays against UF where he had good catches and had to go sit out for a couple of plays. Go watch O states receivers and they have to be pulled off the field. Our O-line looked great against inferior teams but against teams with good edge rushers and moderately decent D-lines and our guys got WORKED.  I think Shea is still laying on the ground somewhere balled up int he fetal position.

He had an opening,it was his old job.  He surely had been thinking about how to fill it since he was appointed head coach.  Harbaugh is doing, I am sure, his own analysis of the coaches’ performances right now, but he doesn’t have an opening yet.

Brian noted turnover in staff as a negative in his post yesterday.  Perhaps we're seeing the beginning of the end (or the end of the beginning) for OSU.

<Yawn>... people losing their shit over a new coach hiring a replacement for his vacancy, and somehow using it as an indictment of Harbaugh's ability to assemble a staff despite plenty of evidence to the contrary.

One thing that I think is drastically overlooked is the lack of depth @ WR. Yes, we have good WR's in Black, DPJ, Collins, Perry, etc.... but to run a 4 and 5 Wide offense well, you need 8-10 of those type of receivers. Once you get past Perry and Martin, you get to some Walk Ons really fast. . I see with this recruiting class that we are bringing in 4-6 guys (depending on where the athletes end up) that can help create more of a rotation. This compared to one TE. I see those numbers as us moving more towards a WR heavy offense instead of a TE, FB paradise.

It is one thing to change an OC. But if you don't have the parts and pieces recruited, it doesn't matter who is OC. It will be an interesting off-season.

OSU fan here.  Rumors are rampant on OSU boards that Al Washington is going to be hired by OSU to be the new linebackers coach.  I have no idea if true, but thought people on this board would want to know.

OK. Cool. Neg' Me.

Right now Day is simply hiring to replace his position on the staff since he was promoted to head coach.

As far as the rest of the timeline on Bill Davis vs. Al Washington, there is no doubt who the better coach is of the two, but nothing has happened yet.

Complaing about JH not making any moves by comparing him to Day doesn't stack up just yet, cause neither have made any fire/firm handshake moves yet.

I want to see changes on the offensive coaching staff. But the season ended 5 days ago. Can you at least a little before crying about lack of changes?

So you're suggesting we would be better off by letting Harbaugh retire, promoting Pep Hamilto to head coach, and going out to hire a new OC, just to match what Ohio State is doing?

Not sure where else to put this but my friend who is an OSU fan texted me their insiders are reporting Al Washington to OSU is a done deal

He saw the TUOS game, and is likely giddy with anticipation.

And you thought they didn't play defense in the Big 12...
