Zach Gentry to NFL Draft
January 1st, 2019 at 11:09 PM ^
Thank you!
January 1st, 2019 at 11:05 PM ^
He isn't a finished product, but he got a good draft grade. Why not get paid to develop in the league, and likely be utilized better than here?
January 2nd, 2019 at 4:59 AM ^
This. He's definitely getting drafted so go get paid to get better in the NFL.
January 2nd, 2019 at 5:43 AM ^
EXACTLY!
Some people here only see entering the draft as "you should enter when you have the very highest chance at being selected as high as possible."
That's what we've been trained to think.
In reality, is Gentry getting drafted in the 3rd or 4th round in 2019 really that much different than getting drafted in the 2nd or 3rd round in 2020?
If he's not going to jump into the top 20, is it THAT big of a deal? And what has anyone seen to make you think that coming back for a year could put Gentry in the top 20? Is there someone leaving and Harbaugh is churning out 1st round TEs so he's going to get more targets? No.
He's just going to be a year older with more experience at the position. He can get that in the NFL and get paid to do it. Whether it's this year or next year, he's likely a backup TE and developmental prospect.
January 1st, 2019 at 11:19 PM ^
Thanks for dropping that on us Zach. jk, all the best.
January 1st, 2019 at 11:42 PM ^
agree
January 2nd, 2019 at 6:55 PM ^
Makes you wonder.
January 1st, 2019 at 10:40 PM ^
January 1st, 2019 at 10:40 PM ^
I'm sure he'll make it, but he did not look ready this season. People point out the dropped passes, but in my opinion his greater problem was poor blocking.
January 1st, 2019 at 10:46 PM ^
He definitely got beat on some plays. Versus MSU he gave up a sack to willekes that was brutal. Not sure its an effort thing he's just a tall dude and off the line he doesn't have great "bend" or leverage. He's a receiving weapon.
January 1st, 2019 at 10:49 PM ^
He should not have been put in that position to block him! Had no chance!!
January 1st, 2019 at 11:05 PM ^
Agreed. That play could have been brutal. Willekes dominated that game and Gentry should not have been 1 on 1 versus that leveraged athlete.
He won't be in too many of those situations at next level. He's a weapon that, when deployed intelligently, can be a red zone nightmare.
January 2nd, 2019 at 12:30 AM ^
Red Zone nightmare? Depends on who his team is playing I suppose. If I were a db or linebacker coach I'd tell my guys slap his forearms or elbows with little to some effort when the ball gets there and get ready for the next play.
January 2nd, 2019 at 8:50 AM ^
What’s really disappointing is with all the trouble we had getting 6 in the red zone, did we EVER throw a fade route or jump ball to this man? We misused his talent! Again, good luck Zach!
January 1st, 2019 at 11:06 PM ^
Kelce 1.5
January 1st, 2019 at 10:42 PM ^
Gotta have some people leave to get under 85 for next year, Gentry leaving doesn’t concern me.
January 1st, 2019 at 10:57 PM ^
If the new version of getting processed involves declaring for the nfl draft with 1 year of eligibility remaining, then sign me up for this version of Michigan football.
Good luck to Zach and congrats on an incredible transition from quarterback to nfl tight end draft pick.
January 1st, 2019 at 10:42 PM ^
Doesn't this add some credence to the Spath info that many were saying was just disgruntled fan talk?
He spoke about the play calling and the deer in the headlights approach once the game started. He also spoke about how Gentry wasn't pleased with the staff and specifically how he thought he could have beat out okorn and sleight and that he was going to head to the draft partially due to the frustration?
January 1st, 2019 at 10:45 PM ^
He should be grateful to the staff. I may be wrong, but TE was his best path to the NFL.
January 1st, 2019 at 11:02 PM ^
How much film did you watch of him as a qb to make this informed post? I would have been interested to see how he could have developed as a qb. Had to have been better than JOK (no offense to him).
January 2nd, 2019 at 11:02 AM ^
oh, sure, no offense to john o'korn. except you brought him up specifically, so...
i don't need to see film of him as a high school qb to be able to say that tight end was the best choice. he's going to get drafted by the nfl, unlike literally hundreds of college quarterbacks with spectacular high school film. what would great high school film show?
January 2nd, 2019 at 8:05 AM ^
Based on what? He was highly regarded as a QB. I think this position switch was a failure. Harbaugh's infatuation with TE's baffles me. Then again, it is Harbaugh so...
January 1st, 2019 at 11:00 PM ^
In the world of shoot at the moon and hoping to land a rumor this was one that was almost an easy call... This isn't something out there and there was a chance that if He kept dropping big passes he was gonna get passed by the 2 4 Star TE's we have brought in in the last few years who have played TE all their lifes and know how to block...
Him going is best for all involved good luck in the NFL hope they don't ask to you to catch big 3rd down passes.
January 1st, 2019 at 11:01 PM ^
You're saying Gentry is leaving for the NFL early as a tight end because he was frustrated at being moved to a tight end? Just what?
Also, Gentry dropped like 3 passes vs OSU, and he's the one who is pissed off at the staff?
Dude, please stop. This is really dumb.
January 2nd, 2019 at 11:16 AM ^
Maybe, there's also a very good possibility that he got an NFL draft grade that he was happy with and decided to make the jump
January 1st, 2019 at 10:43 PM ^
I think it's a good decision.
January 1st, 2019 at 10:43 PM ^
Met some friends of his family in an airport on the way to the Nebraska game. It was their first visit to the big house. This has nothing to do with him entering the draft other than he seems like a good dude and I wish him well. Top QB prospect out of NM entering draft at TE position. The Michigan difference?
January 1st, 2019 at 10:43 PM ^
Best of luck Zach G! Rep blue in the NFL.
Definitely liked his game and wish he'd gotten more targets, along with less drops... Regardless we need offensive talent in the league repping M.
January 1st, 2019 at 10:43 PM ^
Whatever. Love him or hate him, Gregg Henson claims that Michigan is making changes to its staff and that we'll hear good news soon about the offense.
January 1st, 2019 at 10:46 PM ^
Don’t listen to GERG Henson.
January 1st, 2019 at 10:49 PM ^
He was right about Harbaugh being hired and people still think he doesn't know anything...I don't get it. Some people on here are so self rightous about where their Michigan information comes from
January 1st, 2019 at 10:55 PM ^
Ehh they know he has some insider sources, they just don't like him for other reasons that I don't wanna bring up. But he also called gentry to the NFL like a week or two ago and is obviously right. Also the nordin stuff is out there as well.
January 1st, 2019 at 11:00 PM ^
I used to listen to the guy on WDFN. That’s why I don’t like him.
Nordin issuses are not a surprise considering he was benched and people thought Gentry was potentially NFL during the season.
January 1st, 2019 at 11:07 PM ^
Didn't really direct that towards you SQ, I actually like you as a poster. But I think most people here dismiss him way too easily when he's proven to have some kind of insider info. I understand 90% of posters here hate his political views and that's fine but his Michigan tweets have usually been pretty accurate if you go through them.
January 1st, 2019 at 11:12 PM ^
He's clearly a douche the way he tweets but he is accurate at what he says about Michigan football.
January 2nd, 2019 at 10:15 AM ^
Henson had potential to be a good radio guy on espn 96.1 in west michigan, but the guy was such a certified asshole in general is the main reason why he didn't last . Had to unfollow him on twitter as the guy just seems like a constantly negative and angry person.
January 1st, 2019 at 11:13 PM ^
Per his own link, he mentioned Gentry leaving...yesterday. So he beat the "official" announcement by a day, not 2 weeks.
Also, saying Quinn Nordin isn't particularly popular doesn't seem like much a stretch since he's apparently lost his job as the starting kicker. I don't follow any rumors and even I could figure out that if a kicker isn't injured and doesn't have his job, he's probably not doing well.
Henson throws shit at the wall and when some of it sticks he claims victory. I'm sure he has "insiders" that are mostly disgruntled former players and staff who want to trade in gossip. But he's only going to get that quality of content as a result, it's going to be supremely slanted, and it's going to be of dubious value. I'm always suspect of any "insider" info traded around here because more times than not it turns out be mostly innocuous chatter, but I still trust that more than most of what Henson dishes out.
January 1st, 2019 at 11:19 PM ^
I get what you're sayin, I'm just pointing out that he seems to have some kind of insider info. I don't really care to defend him any longer. We're Michigan fans and want the best for our team and on this case he had somethin positive to share so I wanted to share that and hope maybe it's true.
January 2nd, 2019 at 5:25 AM ^
Throws shit at the wall and sees what stick, You mean just like UMBIG11
January 1st, 2019 at 10:56 PM ^
Because he is a buffoon.
January 1st, 2019 at 11:54 PM ^
He was right about Harbaugh but has since been right about 10% of the time. That and his childish act are why people brush him off as a joke.
Go back on his twitter and see for yourself how often he claimed stuff that ended up being false.
January 1st, 2019 at 10:53 PM ^
Gregggggggggggggggggggg
January 1st, 2019 at 10:56 PM ^
And another person falls for the "Gregg Henson is making generalizations with virtually not useful insider information but it's what you want to hear so you assume it's true" gameplan.
Henson is ChatSports/Ace Williams if they weren't ALSO failed broadcasters and radio personalities.
January 1st, 2019 at 11:13 PM ^
Can someone give me the cliff notes of the Henson/Yoder twitter battle that just went on?
Doesnt look good at all.
January 1st, 2019 at 11:21 PM ^
Henson called yoder out on being a hack and a criminal (financial fraud and all that) and they just traded jabs like elementary kids.
January 2nd, 2019 at 12:49 AM ^
Yoder called out Henson on one of his video reports for reporting on Nordin being kicked off the team. Henson responded with a Yahoo finance article that slammed Yoder.
Fun stuff, but none of it had to do with Michigan football lol.
January 1st, 2019 at 10:45 PM ^
Played the worst game of his Michigan career against OSU. Just never really developed reliable hands.
That said, he has a TON of potential and I'm sure NFL teams will be willing to spend a late round pick to try and develop it.
January 1st, 2019 at 10:52 PM ^
He's kind of the Rashan Gary of offense on this team. Had tons of potential, showed up in games sporadically, will be a combine freak, fan base shit on him a lot, might do well in the NFL, might be a flop...
Either way, wish them both the best of luck.
January 1st, 2019 at 10:58 PM ^
Gary was still very productive. Didn’t put up the big sack numbers, but he was great against the run his entire career.
January 1st, 2019 at 11:16 PM ^
But that's kind of my point. Gentry was also very productive, but both dudes get a bad rap from the fanbase by the ends of the careers here. Gentry was third on the team in catches and yards this season and last. Yet, due to a couple of bad drops that really wouldn't have changed the Ohio State game one bit, he's suddenly the worst player to ever don the winged helmet.
Like Gary, dude was very solid his entire career.
