College Game Day Open Thread
This is the last "official" College Game Day, I think. They will probably do some one-off Bowl / CFP preview later.
The coolest thing about Army - Navy is that you could see one 50 years ago and it would be exactly the same. It's pure college football.

the coolest thing about army-navy is the character of the respective teams. i love how at the end of the game each team stands respectfully behind the other as they serenade their fans. tears flowing down the cadets/middies faces. i'm sorry, that is what sets this game apart from all others, even our own favorite rivalry.

The fabric of American sports culture is woven by this game. This is what it's all about.

Go Navy - Beat Army!
(probably not this year, I know, but still Go Navy!)

Didn't know it was on today. Probably not going to watch, though. Had SportsCenter on for about 30 seconds this morning and had to endure some Dwayne Haskins home videos. The love affair is real, and I just can't do it... Yeah, I know the Heisman is awarded, and I just can't care. Apathy, man, apathy... It still has a strong hold on me. Maybe the Army Navy game will help, but since I was in the Navy, and they pretty much suck this year, I'm not hopeful!
GO NAVY!!!!

If we had an 8 team playoffs, this would be the quarterfinals Saturday.

I think it would have been last weekend and we would get rid of the conf championship game.

In its time, when I was a boy, this game was one of the biggest in college football, and revered as a rivalry with greater passion than most others in college football. It is still a great rivalry and each year my brother-in-law who went to the Naval Academy and then proudly served thereafter gets to enjoy his school's day in the sun or usual slate gray weather in Philadelphia or Baltimore where this game is usually played, nearby to both military academies.
One of my dad's late best friends also attended Annapolis and graduated in the same class as former president Jimmy Carter.
I recall games when Army and Navy were at the top of the college heap, and playing in New York's big baseball stadiums that drew the kind of attendance that we now regard as a smaller scale Big Ten contest on any Saturday in the fall. But next year, Michigan after scheduling and then seeing matchups with Army postponed throughout the last three decades, will finally get a date to play the Cadets at the Big House. That ought to be fun just like today's game always is.

I was hoping it was the basketball game day by now. But yeah, Army-Navy is tremendous.

Next week, I think.

I saw the Army - Navy game at JFK Stadium (next to the Spectrum and Veteran's Stadium, was demolished 1992) in Philadelphia back in the very early 1970's. The stadium was a dump and you sat on old wooden benches that gave you splinters. The weather was dreary and cold, but it was quite memorable. It was definitely old school, even for the day.

If there's a bowl preview, knowing me, I would likely watch, although I just pulled up the schedule from the NCAA site and some of these matchups.....yuck.

My favorite Army-Navy game of all time might be last year's.
Intense, dramatic game in the snow, last possession heroics on both sides, comes down to the final play, a one point 14-13 win on a barely missed field goal . . . the ultimate euphoric high and the ultimate devastating low, side by side.
And nothing but respect when it was over.
Tip of the hat.

Urban Meyer is a cunt.
December 8th, 2018 at 11:50 AM ^
Fluff piece on Urban Meyer.
10 minutes about his on-field glory.
Barely 10 words about his off-field shame.
Whatever. At this point, I'm just glad he's gone.
We move on.

I know a lot of people don't like him, but I find Charles Barkley entertaining.
However . . . I can't believe they couldn't get somebody more relevant to be the guest picker for the Army - Navy game.
Hell, even the Chainsmokers would be less puzzling of a choice.

Army is one of the few teams that has a winning record against Michigan, at 5-4; the last game between the two schools was in 1962, a Michigan victory.
Michigan is 12-1-5 against Navy, with the last game in 1981, a narrow 21-16 Michigan win.
The last military academy player to win the Heisman was Roger Staubach in 1963. He led the Midshipmen to a 9-2 record, including a 26-13 victory over Michigan in Ann Arbor and a #2 final national ranking. That was the last year either Army or Navy finished the season ranked in the top 10.

Tied 67-67, Seton Hall hits a 3 with 1.5 seconds left to take 70-67 lead. But Kentucky hits a half court shot at buzzer to send it to OT, 70-70. Unreal ending to game on Fox...
UPDATE: Seton Hall hits a 3 with 9 seconds left in OT and holds on to win 84-83. Terrific game.
An absolute ton of whiny assholes on the Michigan-South Carolina thread complaining about the quality of our double digit win today over an SEC with a lot of talent. Ask the Wildcat fans how they feel...
