With all the hype we were hearing in fall camp, it is a bit dissapointing. As others have stated, wish him well if true. If true, let's get our support to "those who stay". Again, hope it isn't true, but all the best to him if it is.

Tbh there wasn’t much hype this fall, it was mostly last year and this spring. A lot of us expected Hudson to step up and win a starting job, and his inability to gain traction was weird. But I figured that he just had some more work to do.
But here we are.

What a shame.
The Team, The Team, The Team

I try to give players the benefit of the doubt with this sort of thing. Sometimes transferring is the right move.
But this, if true, is a transfer that looks suspiciously like an impulse decision. Consider: he has absolutely nothing to gain by bugging out now. He could benefit from sticking through the rest of the year, getting practice reps, getting strong. He could announce after the regular season and have exactly the same chance to get in at another place.
Instead, he’s nuking the rest of the season. He doesn’t preserve a redshirt. He doesn’t get a head start. The only tangible benefit is that he gets to skip class. It sounds like this is prompted by not going in against MSU; even if this has been building for a few weeks, it’s still a rush decision.
And for that reason I think this is bad for James. Also, likely, bad for us-impulse decisions have less to do with “clearly not going to play” and more with the feelings one gets in the heat of the moment.

Eh. Warinner is proving he can do a lot with a little. I’m not worried about the OL.
October 22nd, 2018 at 7:13 PM ^
I think you mean “a lot with a little.”
Unless you meant to say “Drevno.”
October 22nd, 2018 at 7:21 PM ^
Doh. You’re right.
October 22nd, 2018 at 7:56 PM ^
I had the same take
October 22nd, 2018 at 9:17 PM ^
Except he can't skip class or he'll be ineligible. Basically he's going from "training with a very good football team" to "nothing".
I mean it's better for Michigan if he leaves now instead of at the end of the season - knowing he's gone, the team won't waste any reps or resources coaching him, and they can close out recruiting knowing there's an extra spot on the OL.
Hard to see how it's better for Hudson though.

Have to agree with stephenrjking. Best of luck to the young man, but as Lloyd Carr said of Drew Henson when Henson announced he was leaving the team: "He's giving up a lot."
October 22nd, 2018 at 7:06 PM ^
On the bright side tackle is the one spot you really don't need a lot of depth :(
October 22nd, 2018 at 7:10 PM ^
I’m conflicted: if this is true I wish that the kid would have stuck it out and developed I get being competitive and not wanting to sit on the sidelines but life is not going to hand you everything you want either.
side note: Stueber looked acclimated in relief he’s a big ma’ama jama except those arms Needs to see some more of Mr. Herbert
edit: just read that it was confirmed anyone else thing these mid season transfer Announcements are wierd, I can’t remember a top team having so many at such a time, I speculate that JH is not keeping the depth chart a secret and that it moves depending on what the coaches see weekly could be some kids saw themselves drop and packed it in, I’m at a loss beyond that though
October 22nd, 2018 at 8:41 PM ^
These mid season transfers are happening all over the college football landscape this year.
October 22nd, 2018 at 11:06 PM ^
December signing date no doubt has almost everything to do with it.
October 22nd, 2018 at 7:13 PM ^
His reason could be anything, football or non football related.
October 22nd, 2018 at 7:13 PM ^
Maybe with how good the OLine is playing, including Runyan at LT, that he will stick there for next year too. And then at RT like others above said, Mayfield and maybe Stueber too have passed him?
So in his mind, it wouldnt be until 2020 that he has a chance to start(after Runyan graduates)?
Or maybe the position switch was too much for him, and he just wasnt picking up the OL as well as he thought and wants to switch back to DL
October 22nd, 2018 at 7:14 PM ^
Good luck to him.
October 22nd, 2018 at 7:15 PM ^
These things happen. No big deal. Good luck to the young man.
October 22nd, 2018 at 7:18 PM ^
Unfortunate if true - he showed real potential in his limited snaps this year.
Hope everything is OK with him.
October 22nd, 2018 at 7:18 PM ^
This is a bummer.
It's difficult to imagine that a school like UM has years-long serious shortage on the OL. I know the background (Hoke recruiting, a few Harbaugh misses, injuries, etc.), but that doesn't change the current situation.
We're paper thin, and the OSU game, (hopefully) B1G Championship, and bowl game(s!!) may turn on whether we have injuries on the OL.
October 22nd, 2018 at 9:11 PM ^
Good thing we now have an OL coach who can work with what he has and make a good line out of them.
October 22nd, 2018 at 7:19 PM ^
So the OT's battling in 2019 are Hayes, Mayfield, Steuber, Honingford, Spanellis and Runyon?
October 22nd, 2018 at 7:20 PM ^
Those who stay will be champions
October 22nd, 2018 at 7:21 PM ^
Best of luck to him in all future endeavors.
October 22nd, 2018 at 7:21 PM ^
Wish him luck. I don't see the utility in trying to figure out why he's leaving the program (especially when the most common assumption is just shit-talking a guy's "toughness" and "heart").
October 22nd, 2018 at 7:37 PM ^
But I mean...why?
You're on a top 10 team competing for a conference title and a playoff spot. You could play at a moment's notice. You're 1.5 years into your career. Why are you leaving?
I thought the Singleton transfer was weird, but this surpasses it for strangeness.
October 22nd, 2018 at 7:46 PM ^
I don't know why he's leaving, I'm going to safely assume nobody here does. Probably only a handful of people know for sure. But I don't see any good reason to speculate, especially when comments typically are tinged with the "he must be quitting on the team" bias.
October 22nd, 2018 at 10:52 PM ^
Spending time perusing the thought of internet commenters doesn’t sound very utilitarian, either.
October 22nd, 2018 at 7:22 PM ^
this totally harshes my 7-1 buzz
October 22nd, 2018 at 7:23 PM ^
Well this stinks, had really high hopes for him. Anyone know if he traveled with the team this weekend?
October 22nd, 2018 at 7:24 PM ^
As someone from the Toledo area and having two buddies who coached him, this is a sad day. Good kid and great potential. Neither guy knew of this
October 22nd, 2018 at 7:25 PM ^
Who do we have left on the depth chart for tackles after the starters?
October 22nd, 2018 at 7:26 PM ^
Sam Webb just tweeted confirmation
October 22nd, 2018 at 7:26 PM ^
Anyone know how JBB is feeling? I wonder if he is sidelined right now and Stueber took 1st team reps that might have pushed Hudson over, switching from D to O line is a hard sell to a young talented guy, but if your told the jobs yours for the taking and it doesn’t materialize that situation could lead to some disgruntled emotions.
October 22nd, 2018 at 7:32 PM ^
i dont think its too serious i saw some videos of him jumping around celebrating with his teamates. thank goodness he had the knee brace
October 22nd, 2018 at 7:36 PM ^
Good to hear I think one of the better stories from this years team is JBB staying back in AA during the team trip to work, it looks like the light went on for him and I think he’ll get a shot at the next level.
October 22nd, 2018 at 7:28 PM ^
Wow! What interesting timing. You'd think he'd at least stay through the end of the season. Wonder what happened and very sad it happened now. I get wanting to get into the transfer database quickly, but this just seems weird timing-wise.
October 22nd, 2018 at 7:30 PM ^
But Mineral King said he's starting! Doh!
October 22nd, 2018 at 7:35 PM ^
Gotta say, I expected Hello posts after that game, not Exits.
October 22nd, 2018 at 7:43 PM ^
I thought winning cures everything. Man this hurts... Tackles don’t grow on trees, and from the camp reports he has a real chance on beating a good one
October 22nd, 2018 at 7:49 PM ^
Won't he have to sit out a year?
October 22nd, 2018 at 8:02 PM ^
Rest of this year. Only played four games
October 22nd, 2018 at 8:08 PM ^
My understanding is that you still have to sit out a year unless you're a grad transfer. The year of sitting is to discourage undergrads from transferring, I thought anyway, and is kinda separate from the whole "5 years to play your 4 years of eligibility (with some medical exceptions), and you can play up to 4 games in that 1 year of red shirt"...
I've seen this very question come up a few times already this year, and how kids think they'll be immediately eligible next year, but sadly will not.
Would appreciate others weighing in.

after so many years of looking for a tackle or two, and hearing the Hudson hype this is a real punch in the gut.
October 22nd, 2018 at 8:01 PM ^
Apparently it's something about him wanting to play on defense.
